Nvidia PR has been extremely aggressive for many years, and has contributed greatly to the success of Nvidia. I don't see what's wrong with ATI fighting back with the same levels of marketing chutzpah.
Nothing's wrong with it but I remember a time when those in the ATI camp would hold their head high because ATI didn't stoop to Nvidia's level. Looks like ATI likes to follow Nvidia and come one better - FUD, dual-slot cooling, probably SM3.0 and SLI too. If you can't beat 'em join 'em
I personally wish ATI would act more like a company and spice up things a little bit. Notice how ATI PR is all about denying the claims of NV PR - why can't they come with their own material!!
It's not FUD if it's the truth:
- Nvidia's dustbuster was loud, didn't cool a highly overclocked chip, vented heat into the case. ATI's version is smaller, very quiet, takes heat out of the case.
- SM3.0 We've seen nothing significant in games using SM3.0. Nvidia's version is slow (especially on anything other than the very top end product) and can't do branching without a big performance hit. You will need a new card to run any game with significant SM3.0 including the ones from Nvidia. ATI said they would have SM3.0 in their cards when it was worth expending the transistors for it and wouldn't cause the rest of the chip to suffer to produce nothing but a marketing check box at this time.
- SLI - I don't recall ATI having said anything against SLI other than it's a very niche product. A lot of posters have given many reasons why they are not interested in SLI from either Nvidia or ATI.
- ATI has come up with a lot of their own PR material. Just look back through the news stories for press releases and interviews over the last six months. The vast majority of it is about their own products, whereas the majority of Nvidia PR is all about slating the opposition - just remember things like Nvidia telling everyone that ATI PCIE products used a bridge (when they didn't) or that SM2.0 in Far Cry gave a flat shaded low quality picture (when it didn't), or that 3DMark deliberatly went out of their way to make Nvidia products look bad (it didn't) or ATI PCIE card's were not SIG compliant (they were).
If you don't see the difference between Nvidia lying about their products and those of their competitors, and ATI pointing out those lies, then there's not really much more ways for anyone to explain it to you.
Nvidia's PR may have finally pushed ATI into being a bit more aggressive and proactive, but ATI are still a long way from being dragged down into the gutter PR we've seen from Nvidia over the last couple of years.
