AMD: Southern Islands (7*** series) Speculation/ Rumour Thread

Different APIs have different tex/image array limitations exposed. CUDA supports up to 64K tex dimentions for 1D and 2D arrays, for 2.0 compatible devices. OCL is limited to 32K arrays, OGL4 - 16K.

32K * 32K is probably just got to do with addressable size. Thats 1:love:0 texels. Making it a RGBA texture would make it need 4 GiB of address space. Hardware probably has a 32 Bit address limitation *somewhere*

just a guess, if there going to the effort for Doom im betting that PRT's will be in next gen consoles.

The next Xbox looks like a 2013 product, if not a later one, so it's very likely. The same could be true for the PS4. I guess if the Xbox supports it, it will make all the sense in the world for Microsoft to put it in DX12 or some revision of DX11, which would give AMD a nice head start.

That said, I was under the impression that Doom 4 would be a PS3/Xbox 360 game—and PC, of course.

No, maximum texture size of GCN is 32 TByte, or 2 TeraTexel with 4x32Bit Values. You arrive there with 16k x 16k x 8k textures. It's more than 32 Bits (41 Bit linear texture address).

The limitation of the texture size in a single dimension is done to retain a good resolution for the texel weights when doing filtering. For filtered access addressing into textures is normally done with floats normalized between 0 and 1, which means one has basically 23 Bit resolution close to 1. Current Radeons have 8 or 9 Bit resolution for the filtering weights (I tested it once with a HD5850, can't remember if it was 8 or 9 Bits).
23 Bits - 9 Bits = 14 Bits
2^14 = 16k

The work that AMD is doing to the driver is... IMPRESSIVE.

This is to be expected. GCN is the biggest change in the architecture since R600. The target for the compiler has really changed *a lot*. They have had years to tweak their present compiler -- it will take them years until their new compiler is of the same quality. Right now, flop-to-flop, GCN scores worse in games than the present gen. GCN shaders are much more flexible and efficient than the last gen, they should, and will, score much better.

The big, tens-of-% improvements will happen now, but there will be much more than that in future drivers, a few % in every release.

If I understand it correctly, that single texture array doesn't need to be physically contiguous, and will never actually exist in RAM in whole. More likely, the presently un-used parts are stored on-disk, compressed fe. with JPEG, and uncompressed into use on-demand.

One of my friends got a 7970 recently, and I'm really tempted to get one now except for one thing.

Holy hell is this thing loud compared to his previous 6950 and my current 5870. This thing is almost as a loud as a GTX 580. I can't imagine living with that sound on a daily basis when gaming. I don't usually turn my sound up loud in games, but I'd probably have to with this.

We tried limiting fan speed through the Sapphire Trixxx thing, but it seems to be broken as it doesn't constantly adjust fan speed when put to custom. But even then to keep temps below 90c when gaming he still needed ~50% fan speed and at that point it's starting to approach GTX 580 noise levels. Ugh. And that was at stock clocks.

Since both xb720 and PS4 will go AMD for the graphics, this is a given.

Neither company has announced anything. So while I'd agree it's likely to be AMD, Nvidia certainly aren't out of the running.

But considering size and power consumption are relatively large factors in console developement, AMD certainly holds a rather large advantage there.

SB

Maybe try reapplying the thermal paste? Cause that doesn't match the reviewers' testing.

There are custom versions coming out (or just about to). HardWare.fr reviewed the XFX Double Dissipation Edition, which turned out to be slightly quieter, but also hotter. Powercolor is also about to release their own custom version, and I guess you could always buy a cooler separately and install it yourself.

Or use headphones. :p

Or use headphones. :p

That's what I used to use, noise isolating earbuds or circumaural headphones. Unfortunately, that combined with frequent clubbing when I was younger has lead to a constant ringing in my ears. Hence why I game at lower volumes and avoid headphones except when flying or in public places at my doctors advice. I'd rather not have it get worse. :p It's already extremely loud, especially if there's no ambient noises like at night. But it's to the point I can even perceive it when there's heavy traffic on the arterial outside my place.

I suppose I could also stick the PC in a closet and then find a way to air condition the closet. :D

Just talked to my friend again. Ooops got it wrong that was while trying the overclock (impressive OC headroom as we hit the max CCC clocks no problem at stock voltage).

Anyways, at normal we were hitting 45% fanspeed (sometimes a little more sometimes a little less) to keep it at ~80c. So 45% was the really loud almost GTX 580 noise levels while the 50%+ when we overclocked was REALLY loud. Probably same as stock GTX 580 or maybe a little more.

You must be a lot more sensitive to fan noise than I am. I only have two dinky speakers and don't turn them up really loud yet subjectively the 7970 isn't more noticeable to me than the 5770 I had in there before.

Yeah I think 7970 and 6970 are louder than 580.
Thinking is never enough :)

The 580 is loud? Mine isn't and I didn't realize the consensus was that it is.

Yes. Not HD 2900 XT loud, but it's definitely loud to me. If future enthusiast cards are going to GTX 580/7970 loud, I may have to start not going for the enthusiast cards anymore.

Could be. It may be why I've developed Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) so early. Started in my early 30's.

Perhaps I'll see what the 7950 is like, as well see what kind of cooling solutions the AIBs end up putting onto the cards. Don't like cards that dump heat into the case (like the XFX 7970) so not sure if anything quieter will come out.

Yeah I think 7970 and 6970 are louder than 580.

No, have a couple friends with 580's and it's definitely much louder than the 6970 and a tad louder or maybe even the same as the 7970 at stock under load.
