Wow, Grand Theft Auto did better than I thought it would considering the history of some of the other franchises mentioned!

Kinda shows you why Nintendo is still around after 20+ years. Hilarious that Miyamato-san developed 3 of the top 10 franchises of all time (Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda). Halo didn't quite make the list at only 14.55 million copies. I can see why there are rumours of Microsoft buying Capcom. They are the only affordable company in the top 10 that would be possible for Microsoft to buy. Sony owns 20% of Square-Enix, and Nintendo, EA, and Rockstar are not for sale. Lineage popularity is pretty much confined to South Korea. Interesting.

-Length of franchise history

-Number of titles put out in franchise

-Number of spin-offs in franchise

-Some way to measure community support? (<-Hardest, but probably most accurate.)
another metric perhaps
sales / num of titles
i guessing Gran Turismo would be leading then followed by Grand Theft Auto

Wow! apart from Goldeneye, are there any good bond games?

No, but clearly a game being good and a game selling a lot of units are not directly related.

Yes, this does show why Nintendo has been around for so long and even when their consoles do not sale so hot they manage to just sell tons of software. I found it rather telling that the top two slots are either more than double or close to double that of the next closest.

TBH It _is_ kinda surprising IMO, that Warcraft didn't fit in, I mean, only WoW alone has sold over 10 millions already, and WC3+TFT sold quite damn well too, and then there's 1 & 2 too. (I assume they don't count the books etc to that :p )

I wonder if they combine World of Warcraft sales with the Warcraft RTS games though? I've seen them split up several times before, so its hard to tell.

And if you start counting by revenue, WoW will surely be in the top 5 of the list. How many times over will the average WoW zombie have paid the game ?

Cheers

Well this is about franchises, and WoW is part of Warcraft franchise

Hard to say, as the amount of players keep growing and growing.
Oh, and the 10 million MIGHT be active subscriptions, not total sold which should be then even higher as many have quit, as they were at over 8 million sold few months back, well before the holidays which definately boosted the sales agani?
Personally I've paid, in addition to the game itself, I've paid.. hmm. around 300eur I think, been playing since europe launch in february 2005.

This list is from wikipedia, and some gaffers thought it "innaccuratly sourced".

I remember Star Wars being mentioned as an franchise over 20m not on the list, as well as at least another I cant remember.

As of the 11th of january: 8 million active subscribers... times €10/month, that's comparable to selling 1-2 million copies every month. Plus of course the game itself which is sold in more than 10 million copies.

Plus the expansion that is coming this week.

Cheers

Not everyone pays that much though, I believe a lot of Asian countries are priced rather differently and generally cheaper.
