Anecdotal evidence ahoy. Zavvi already offering Xbox one with a discount in the UK. £409.
GameStop selling PS4's with a £20 discount. This parallels the Zavvi XB1 'price drop' with a 6% discount*.

For those who argued that the XB1 price drop was indicative of trouble selling, you either need to admit you were wrong and accept that retailers will engage in tactical price-reductions, or you need to accept PS4's are having trouble shifting, or you need to come up with some different response (ignoring the issue completely and pretending you never said such a thing is the most preferred practice ;)).

*Edit: The comments section suggests it's always, or at least for some time, been sold under RRP at GameStop.

I was thinking it was indicative of bad stock management. ;)

And how much is that per PS4? 34M hours / 5M PS4s = 6.8h per console 34/6 = 5.6 h per console. and so on. edit: That sounds a bit low when you divide those for 7 days.

It's rare for me to have ~7 hours free of commitments each week, let alone ~7 hours free that I'd chose to spend using the PS4 on anything like a regular basis. Obviously it'll depend on the individual, their work/school/study hours, relationship status (a BIG modifier!) and any other responsibilities and hobbies or interest that divides their free time.

I'm 42, my free time is a third of what it was when I was in my 20s! I can't even believe I'd play games for 15 hour sittings or late into the morning, get three hours kip then go into work! It seems crazy now ;-)

The price of the other packs is pretty inflated too. £470 for KZSF pack. £420 for Knack. £400 for the no-nonsense vanilla pack from independent sellers.

I just thought that this early in the systems life, there would be disproportionately many hardcore users that game many hours per day skewing the average higher.

Just measured half an hour ago on GAF, Amazon.com PS4 stock went down from 498 to 173 in 12 minutes. 27 consoles sold per minute [that would be ~1.6k per hour].

edit - wait what, base PS4 box on amazon.co.uk will be restocked in a month [11march]? Really?

Hmm, ps4 is right now over 1k on amazon so i dont know when that reading was.

If true though it would show PS4 selling as well as ever (I typically measured ~1k/hour back in holiday times).

But last time I was able to count it had slowed way down, but it was in the early AM.

I'll be watching to check it when it goes under 1k again. Sadly I have a feeling that will come in the middle of the night again rendering sales rates somewhat tainted.

PlayStation Australia today revealed that the PlayStation range held for the third year running the top position in the interactive entertainment category in 2013.
On top of that, the PlayStation 3 was the highest-selling console for the year, also for the third straight year.

NPD Group Australia also revealed that the PS4 had overtaken the Xbox One in the sales stakes, making it the most popular next-generation console as stock becomes more readily available in the country, topping off a wonderful trifecta for the company.

Brazil is the last country where the Xbox One sales are better than PS4 sales.

Brazil is the last country where the Xbox One sales are better than PS4 sales.

Last gen when 360 arguably outsold PS3 worldwide (or at least essentially tied) it probably only won at most 3-4 countries (US, UK, probably Canada, perhaps Australia).

And I suspect it probably won Mexico and maybe Brazil, maybe some other Latin American countries too but there's really no way to prove it that I know of and those markets are very very small relatively.

Point is basically winning US and UK commandingly is enough to split the world market share really. US is more or less equal to Europe as a market, basically half the Western market which is by now the vast majority of the market since Japan has quietly become much less relevant for consoles.

I think maintaining a significant market presence in the USA is as a practical matter all MS needs to ensure 3rd party support, and that's probably a given. Of course, that might be a disappointing result overall, and significantly less than what 360 accomplished.

Outsold? I d say more like tie. And that with PS3 being delayed in US for a year and a year and a half delay in EU

3rd Party will never stop doing games on Xbox One, make a PC, PS4 and Xbox One version is cheap and Sony will not pay 3rd Party exclusivity...

Xbox One is behind PS4 but it is a good launch better than 360, PS4 is just the biggest launch of all time...

You can't look too much into the launch sales numbers because these were the first launches that weren't heavily supply constrained. We'll have to see how well they sustain sales. So far, it seems like the PS4 is doing a much better job.

And being more expensive.

edit:
Sony says PS4 sales beat Xbox One sales in Jan, citing NPD data

Not surprised. Now the question is by how much.

This PR.. :D

They combined Xbox360+One software to say Xbox family sold most software. ok

Pretty much confirms PS4 will be >XOne when they talk like that, obviously.

I hate it when Ms doesn't win, then they dont give hardware numbers, then it makes calculating all the other numbers that much harder (though somebody on GAF will leak them all in some obtuse fashion anyway). Come on MS, be better than the other guys, dont play "take your ball and go home".

Edit hot of the presses, SECONDS ago on twitter

Geoff Keighley ‏@geoffkeighley 2m

per @LuckyLongworth: PS4 was #1 in sales for next gen consoles in January, nearly doubling the nearest next gen competitor.

Ouch, Neogaf is going to burn down the party's gonna be so intense. And, a lot of doom and gloom for MS...people are gonna ask for that price drop...

What is MS doing? waiting to see about March and Titanfall? I've always said "software doesn't sell hardware". Ask Nintendo...maybe in the aggregate (even that's debatable) but generally speaking, no specific game makes a big, immediate, cause and effect difference on hardware sales...

I know it's more business discussion, and unnecessary panic, but I wonder if about now MS is realizing they fucked up making a weak box. Because "double" means even at $100 less it's doubtful XOne could keep up. Dummies making millions, and I understand the core market better than them, easily...I hope they're really proud of saving 2 bucks on the GPU...it's gonna cost them billions.

They are saying Xbox One sold less than 150k

If so that puts PS4 at under 300k, which isn't spectacular supply.

Edit: Xone number derivation is correct. MS PR gives it away.

It's hidden in there. 2.29x faster than the 360 which sold 1.96M units in its first three months. Subtract the 1.82 Xbones sold through in Nov-Dec and you get ~140K. Or 146K more precisely by what I have.

Although he typod his number of 360's obviously.
360:
November 2005 - 326K
December 2005 - 281K
January 2006 - 249K
=
Three month total: 856K

Xbox One:
November 2013: 909K
December 2013: 908K
=
Two month total: 1817K

So:
1817K + ???K January = (856K) * 2.29
1817K + ???K January = 1960K
January = 143K

I dunno Auqamarine on GAF usually has the numbers (but may not yet) and keeps asking if MS meant worldwide. But the PR clearly says US. Probably nothing but just to know there's a slim chance the 143k number could be wrong.

Anyways 143, meaning PS4 is something like 280K, is actually pretty low for both. At least in PS4 case they could have done more with supply.
