Do we think Nintendo would have made more money if Splatoon was cross platform? Let's say it released on PS4, XB1 and PC. Would competition on these platform limit Splatoon interest, or would the game have gone on to sell many times it's Wii U number?

It definitely would go on to sell more with all three machines combined, but whether that many Xbox and Playstation gamers care much for Nintendo games is a whole other matter.

I've a PS4 and a WiiU and I bought Splatoon for my kids (and most other first-party Nintendo games) and I haven't played it beyond 30 seconds trying to help my son with something. Using the (awful) Gamepad to look is a really frightful experience that I never want to be exposed to EVER again.

I think there's a bloody good chance that - when egos are put aside - millions of people would buy Nintendo games to play on their PS4/X1, if such a universe existed in some sort of parallel dimension where Nintendo are good business people.

The notion that ps4/Xb gamers "aren't interested" in Nintendo games is absurd. Sure, not interested enough to make us pay for the shitty Nintendo hardware, but definitely more than interested enough to get us to pay for the price of the game.

There are not yet there, though they should push their virtual console everywhere, right now emulator are available everywhere (apps, browser based, etc) but there are no legal source for ROMs... Nintendo made a deal with Dena in mobile but it is may be time that they realize that their old games are played on many systems which include mobile OS and more importantly there is no legal offer.

I guess Sony's ship numbers/financial report come out late tonight, yay.

BTW twas mentioned on GAF Dreamcast did 9.13 million lifetime (ship I asssume). So, at least Wii U beat that.

I still tend to look at Nintendo results with a jaundiced eye. Whether they make a little money, the numbers are terrible every quarter. But expected I guess, unless new hardware can change their fortunes.

3 millions PS4 shipped for last quarter, 25,3 millions PS4 shipped ltd

Sales increased 12.1% year-on-year (a 7% increase on a constant currency basis) to 288.6 billion yen (2,365 million U.S. dollars). This significant increase was primarily due to increases in PlayStation 4 (“PS4”) software sales and PS4 peripheral device unit sales as well as the impact of foreign exchange rates, partially offset by a decrease in PlayStation®3 (“PS3”) hardware and software sales.

Operating income increased 15.1 billion yen year-on-year to 19.5 billion yen (160 million U.S. dollars). This significant increase was primarily due to PS4 hardware cost reductions, the above-mentioned increases in PS4 software sales and PS4 peripheral device unit sales, partially offset by the negative impact of the appreciation of the U.S. dollar, reflecting the high ratio of U.S. dollar-denominated costs and the decrease in PS3 software sales.

Operating income in the current quarter also includes 4.7 billion yen (39 million U.S. dollars) of insurance recoveries related to losses incurred from the cyberattack on Sony’s network services including the PlayStation®Network in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2012. During the current quarter there was a 15.6 billion yen negative impact from foreign exchange rate fluctuations

TOKYO— Sony Corp. said Thursday that its net profit more than tripled during the April-June quarter, helped by strong sales in its videogame and smartphone image sensor divisions.

Net income rose to ¥82.44 billion ($665 million) from ¥26.8 billion a year earlier. Analysts surveyed by the Nikkei had expected a profit of ¥50.5 billion. Sales were ¥1.81 trillion, roughly flat from ¥1.8 trillion a year earlier.

Anyway. You guys should know that PS4 sold better this quarter than Xbox One + Xbox 360 + Wii U + Wii + 3DS combined....

I don't think so.
I wouldn't think teen agers want Nintendo games because they consider them "kiddie" games and want "adult" games, amusingly adults don't give a shit and buy whatever they fancy but a lot of them are well formated by society and will consume what they are exposed to most, that is violence...
So no, I don't think that economic model would work that well, the only way I could see it working is for Nintendo to be exclusive to another hardware platform and have a say on its design, so a partnership. Nintendo fans would know what system to purchase and would benefit for a bigger catalogue, a huge win for them, and Nintendo could reach more potential customers, but I doubt it would translate to that many more sales.

No, not sold, nobody has access to worldwide sales numbers. Shipped.

But anyway close enough I guess.

So I get from this Sony didn't give us PS3 this time? Just great. Now I cant do XBO+360 vs PS3+PS4. The numbers provided by each player just keep shifting (except Nintendo, I guess). Very annoying. Aren't there some kind of laws about this stuff?

Unusually high PS4 number (if it wasn't meant to be PS4+PS3?). Possibly stocking up the channel. At a glance I was surprised PS4 NPD was actually up a little quarter over quarter June 2015 vs June 2014.

Apr/May/June 14 665k
Apr/May/June 15 691k

Edit: Definitely PS4 and they just didn't give PS3. Here's a nice table

It will never happen so I guess it's my opinion against yours :)
But I'm pretty damn sure that if the WiiU versions of Super Mario 3D world, Mario Kart and a few others were to be released on other consoles, they would sell a gazillion copies.

The graph on NeoGaf is quite interesting (launches aligned) - shows PS4 in the middle of Wii and PS2, but looking likely to drop below PS2 over the next few months...but a good Christmas can help. WRT XBO, it's now crossing the PS3 sales and tracking X360 - looks like it'll probably be around PS3 sales as a total.

PS4 is doing tremendous numbers while still being at the launch pricepoint and the most expensive console currently on the market. It is clear that smart 3rd party marketing plans and worldwide appeal for PS4 has made it the "home for multiplatform gaming". When more big 1st party titles arrive, sales will become even stronger.

Wow.

It's not even close really.

PS4 - 3M
Xbone + X360 - 1.4M
3DS - 0.8M
WiiU - 0.5M

By the time of Gamescom [5 weeks after the quarterly report], I would not be surprised if the actual sold-through number for PS4 is above 25M.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/ps4-celebrates-six-months-on-top-in-the-uk/0153433

PS4 has been the top selling console every month in UK this year

Nice... very nice.
Sony's Game & Network Services (G&NS) posting a $160m profit for what is generally the leanest quarter of the year is quite impressive (September to December 2014 was $228m) but more interesting is that Sony attribute this significant increase [relative to the same previous calendar quarters] to PS4 hardware cost reductions and a 12.1% increase in sales of PS4 software (partially offset by declining PS3 software sales).

Sony must have a moderate profit margin (at least 20%) on the console now. I know this has been speculated but this evidences the degree of the margin.

This quarter Game division also paid $39M for the 2012 PSN hack.
Yup and they had some unfavourable exchange rate fluctuations that cost them a chunk of change and they still made $160m When Kaz Hirai said PS4 was "likely" to exceed PS2's profits I chalked that up to wishful thinking but they've really got costs under control and still no sign of a baseline price reduction. And why would they, they're selling bucket loads.

They also upgraded their earlier promising April forecast:

Game & Network Services
Sales are expected to be higher than the April forecast primarily due to an expected increase in PS4 hardware unit sales and PS4 software sales. Operating income is expected to be above the April forecast due to the above-mentioned increase in sales, partially offset by the negative impact of foreign exchange rates and an expected increase in marketing and promotional costs.

Sony's PS4 position basically is "we're selling loads and making a good profit. we really have no idea why". If SCE had released three or four 10/10 platform exclusives you could understand it but how are they maintaining the early inertia with very few exclusive reasons to buy a PS4 instead of an Xbox One. Microsoft have to be banging their heads against a brick wall because the volume of PS4 sales really does not make a lot of sense. I like my PS4 but who the hell is buying them and why buy now?

Who's buying PS4? Gamers who are tired of low res, low framerate last gen games on ancient hardware. Why PS4 over XB1? PS4 is faster. I posted this way back when discussing the platforms' futures - given the similarities, I asked what exactly MS was going to compete on. They have exclusives, services, and price as long as they are willing to take more of a hit on hardware. The reasons to own an XB1 over a PS4 are fairly limited to my mind, so it's no wonder PS4 being effectively the same console only better is selling notably more. You need a crazy number of exclusives, a whole extra library, for that to be the reason to pick the notably inferior machine, like PS2. XB may have played some games better, but you'd play a limited library, so PS2 kept it's appeal. When you have two machines with virtually identical libraries where one is better, it's not the most challenging purchasing decision any consumer will face. ;)
