[360, PS3] Crysis 2

I'll say up-front, I am impressed with how they seem to have got the lighting right and the colors correct, and some of the physics are nice too. There may not be a lot more positive that I can say about that (I've tried the PC demo, will try the PS3 and 360 demos), but from what I've seen so far the lighting is just very real looking, much like, say, Gran Turismo. There are certainly scenes that I think look better than Killzone 2 just because of the lighting (and some transparancy also looks great, as do some water effects). On the other hand, what I've seen so far is neither exciting or vibrant - I'll have to see more effects for that. I'd almost prefer this engine for a game like Heavy Rain than a shooter, maybe. Have to think about this some more.

Dont judge to hard on those demo maps, they are some of the worst looking MP maps.

Didn't realize average games used 100% realtime lighting with GI, proper HDR, SSAO, IBL, etc...

In the end, it's what the artists can do with the tech. Tech by itself isn't going to be particularly interesting if the art/presentation "result is average".

Besides, dynamic GI has a lot more potential indoors than outdoors, which should be fairly obvious given how static the environment can be, in which case a higher quality baked GI would make more sense.

Problem is though game has advancing time and time steps triggered at waypoints to make sun move. So baked GI wont cut it. One could however specualte if it is necessary to have advacning time. I'll guess we know when we play SP and see how they used it. It sure ws great in Crysis with sunset , sunrise etc.

With the right set pieces it could just as well be absolutely stunning outdoors. I haven't yet seen a game which had almost blinding reflections off of windows/vehicles as you get in real life on a sunny day. And toss in some trees, some airborne debris from gunfire, explosions, etc. and you could have something you just don't see in other games. Volumetric smoke from gunfire + tree's + GI/godrays could look absolutely fantastic.

There's certainly more opportunities to showcase indoors or at night, but out in the open still has lots of opportunities.

Fair enough. It really just depends on what they hope to do with it. Iteration times during development would be the main thing, but whether that's appreciated by the end user is another matter. :p Just seems a bit tacky unless the day/night cycle were accelerated at all times ala Fable.

:p

Gotta love PR...

One thing I hope they change with the xbox next gen is that gamma curve. It's very apparent how different it is on the 360 vs the other platforms.

Yeah, from what I gather, the 4-piece linear approximation was just an incredibly cheap feature to implement in hardware at the time, and may have been something left-over during the rather prolonged R400 days, but now-a-days it's just insignificant. It's certainly one of the silliest things the artists have had to contend with for multiplatform parity.

I think a lot of you would be more positive if you viewed the gamenight stream of single player, level "sudden impact". It really looked pretty nice for console (despite being a very low res stream), the enemy human character models and windblown trash and papers floating around the level being standouts. Reminds me some of the first levels of Half Life 2 at the time really in art style.

Make no mistake the single player is going to be a force to be reckoned with. Though still from the X360 MP I think that is among the best looking (if not best) MP games too.

The X360 version has moved up to #16 at Amazon, and with 6 days to go perhaps can even push for #1 by release time (Like Homefront briefly got). Maybe it wont be such a bomba. I also think reviews will of course affect sales (THQ stock dropped 25% on bad Homefront reviews) and I expect 90+ in general. I could tell on the 1up stream at least the one editor that had played C2 through for review at review event I would expect a very good review from though of course he couldn't talk about it.

The game night thing? They said they were going to put it up after but they dont seem to have. It could still be NDA stuff too. I guess it would show up here if they do:

Mind you it was VERY low quality stream. But what could be seen hinted at impressive. It looks like the recorded videos are much better quality than the livestream though if it shows up.

So the PS3 version doesn't seem to look so bad after all (comparing it to the other versions). There are even some things that look a tad better. The problem I have with it, though, is the framerate. Videos that were posted before the demo seemed to be a lot smoother than what I played. Supposedly this is from the final code, but I hope that's not true and that they smoothed it out.

Still looking forward to the DF article.

I wonder if there may be debug code running in the background of the MP demo on PS3 in order to help them profile and uncover bugs on PS3 prior to launch? That could potentially lead to slow downs that may not exist in the retail game. Not clue if there is or not, just throwing that out there. :)

imho, the great problem is that: no one discuss about the technical achievement, but the cost for the eyes is almost 'dramatic' to me... I prefer a miles the 'smoke & mirror' of kz3 or ue3 in the best form than what I have seen in the multiplayer demo; it's something that only the more smart tech fan can appreciate, but a 'normal' person could be disgusted easily from the impact. The texture, even the character seem to have something wrong, appear flat & low, with poor details; I don't think the developer are interested in something which only few people can appreciate.
