That's not backwards compatibility. It requires an internet connection. It also isn't free to run, so it'd be costing Sony money to allow people to play their old games. With BC, you pay the hardware and power costs to play the games. With PSNow, Sony pay for the hardware and electricity and internet costs. Free PSNow almost certainly isn't going to happen. The running costs mean PSNow has to be a subscription/rental service.

Would be interesting to see how much MS spent on BC. We will likely never know simply because the return on investment will be impossible to calculate or easily fudged up.

I don't think it would have been that much relatively speaking. They solved it purely via software (ie, no hardware add ons) so it's cost is directly tied to engineer time. Back in the day you would have a small team of 2 to 5 people to port a game from one platform to another (say 360 version downported to Wii or what have you), so 5 coders working 2 years on bc would be a drop in the bucket for Microsoft cost wise. It seems like it should be something horrifically expensive because of how technically challenging it is, but I don't think it would have cost that much, certainly nothing compared to things like marketing budgets and asset creation costs for a typical game nowadays.

That's a little bit like expecting for Sony to pay Crystal Dynamics enough cash to launch the PS4 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider for free on PS+ to 'compensate' players for the timed exclusive.

yes,one of the last bastions is gone now. Switch has been pirated already, emulators run Nintendo games...Scorpio is going to share exclusives with the PC.. Welcome Ryzen 1700 and a decent GPU for my future machine

With a bit of luck, this is indicative is Sony turning PSNow into a service like Amazon Video: stream a selection for the cost of a subscription, but stream anything that you've purchased. Until that day, this service will remain a novelty.

I hope the servers are better than when I last tried it. It wasn't playable for more than 5 mins.
