Nintendo announce: Nintendo NX

According to Liam Robertson (a Nintendo Life contributor), a GFK survey was sent to him by a reliable source containing some information about the NX.

I'm not sure how reliable this is, but it's interesting nonetheless.

The survey should be real, the content might not be. The odd thing listed is 900p 60fps, the wii u has 1080p for games (smash 4), this survey points out that the system outputs 4k, so not sure why 900p is listed.

Handheld? Could be 'minimum' 900p60 for handheld, and 1080p on console. Although surely it's up to the devs/games to target whatever on the handheld. If it supports 900p, it's surely got a 1080p panel as that must be cheaper to source.

It could also be a permanent buttons area on the tablet, limiting the game to 1920x900.

But I still wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo was willing to spend more on a 900p screen instead of using a standard 1080p one, just to gives it a unique form factor.

Why would a survey list the box content?

Not sure if this rumour has been mentioned:

"Nintendo's NX may work with smartphones, PCs and even rival consoles such as PlayStation4."

Personally, that rumour sounds like a 'streaming *server*'. You install your nintendo software on your server, and then play it on whatever device you want over wifi/cables. (remote play is 720@30, maybe NX is 900@60...)

That device could be sold to PS4/XB1 owners 'hassle-free', whilst also remaining relevant when the PS5/XB2 drop?

A system bar would kill immersion in games. I bet Nintendo knows that very well.

The survey might be real, but it's probably something made to gauge the public interest over a series of features and not representative of what to expect for the NX.
- 4K/60FPS video streaming would refer to 4K Netflix support, or more precisely having HDMI 2.0/HDCP2.2 support and full HEVC hardware decoding (definitely not 3D rendering).
- 900p is AFAIK where most XBone titles end up if they're aiming for 60 FPS.
- "Gameplay flows" between console and handheld would refer to people's experience with the tablet controller from the Wii U and how much they would value such interaction in a future console.

The rest is just what would be expected from the current gen (1st-party exclusives, online achievements, social stuff, etc.).

Possibly they are going for an ESRAM based design that puts stresses on large frame buffer size. There are cost benefits as you go to lower nodes.

Also the rumored apu is rumored to be using DDR4, so they'll definitely need to pair that up with esram to store the frame buffer.

The gamepad, I'll never stress it enough, is like a VR helmet w/o cutting yourself from reality, minus 3D though, it provides similar functionality with fewer drawbacks.

We know, you've said it often enough. ;) It is nonsense though, just so you're aware, and this is coming from a WiiU owner. You're quite possibly the only person on the planet who somehow equates the two technologies.

I suppose it's just because I only see both as screen content following head/hand motion.
Sitting with VR goggles on is not the experience people imagine (major disconnect between body and sight), and having a room dedicated to VR is still limiting and not really practical.

So I might summarise that I would much prefer a 720p stereoscopic gamepad for each player over any VR goggle. [And don't even talk about a VR party !]

(Plus stuff about fooling 1 or 2 senses out of 5, games being marathons, characters walking on walls and so on...)
(Might be great for Museum or historical reconstruction though.)

[Anyway offtopic, we could create a thread about it, but it wouldn't be that fun, not that many people have used both devices yet.]

DOANX pls.

Just what Nintendo might need to buttstart sales.
I disagree. Did you see the mass media backlash against that 17year old youtuber who after talking with Amy Schumer at some award show then made a poorly thought out tweeted "Spent the night with Amy Schumer, probably not the first guy" to Amy Schumer. She replied disappointed, and he immediately apologized, but dozens of news agencies caught wind of the 1 tweet and jumped on attacking the kid. His youtube account has been tanked with now 90% downvotes in all his videos.

Nintendo doesn't need the negative media backlash supporting this "sexist" title would bring. It would do more damage than improve. DOA doesn't sell well anyways. A fair number of mothers are swayed the medias firebranding of anything that heavily sexualizes females and they are the purchasers of the Nintendo products for their kids represent a decent amount of its install base.

I saw the 4 tweets. He tried to make a joke of her own style, she didn't like, he apologized saying he didn't mean to insult, she said okay no problem.

Pixel, don't mistake the obsession from a handful of social justice warriors who crept their way into some news blogs as the stance of the people who actually buy and play games.

If we glue all the hint and rumors together, we have that :
- In 2014, Amd signed two semi-custom design, one based on Arm and the other on X86, with one beyond gaming.
- Rumor point Nx to be one of them.
- Its rumored that Facebook is behind the Arm semi-custom. From here, we can suspect X86 apu is for the Nx home.
But:
- Amd profits for 2016 is based on the release of this design win.
- Last rumor point for the release of the 3ds successor first, in November, coinciding with the Amd quarter profits.

Three conclusions:
- The Nx handheld is based on a X86 Apu from Amd.
- Nintendo isnt working with Amd at all for the 3ds successor.
- All rumor is bullshit lol.

what would be the point of that? Nintendo games are known for their surgical precision when it comes to framerate and response, that would make some Nintedo games close to unplayable
