ZDNet/JAPAN: Ken Kutaragi, PS3 Route To Realization

I DON'T think he will actually try the "Cell not in PS3" move... i mean, everyone would laugh at him.... it was one story with the EE since very few people knew about it before unveiling. this time it's different... Cell has been talked about for ages already and everyone knows it will be in
PS3.... saying it won't be in ps3 even if it is could actually harm their position, considering ps3 is supposed to be this miracle machine BECAUSE of Cell...

You never know. Or maybe he will just try to dodge the issue, could be.

But yea, He will announce Cell's specs not unlike EE's. But maybe he just won't say if it's for PS3 or not, probably say it's for the "broadband era".

Than later PS3 is announced and we get to see the GPU too. And the whole package.

It must be because i'm a bit bored of this Cell speculation, but u know what i'm really curious to see.... the controllers.... and i wanna see if FOR ONCE they put simple but oh so important features straight in. one thing i want is an infrared thing AND remote control out of the box. or at least make the remote available at launch. i aint waiting months for an official remote to come out like it happened with PS2... another, VGA out. which might sound a bit geeky to some, but for me it's so important, and for everyone with a plasma screen and some HDTV's which only have VGA inputs (europe here).
there are more, but i cant remember now

You know what I'm interested in?... hmmm.

Your right, Cell is getting boring.

I really like blu-ray, I really love those caddy's for that Sony blu-ray player. And I hope PS3 uses them. They look so slick.

God that thing looks so nice, I never thought a caddy could look good.

The controllers are going to be cool aswell, I hope. They better not just keep the same Dual shock controller this time. Although there really is nothing wrong with it.. But I think they should touch it up a bit, make it better looking. Maybe use better plastic.

I wonder how PS3 will look.. I think a silver look would be pretty cool personally.[/img]

i think the dual shock layout is perfect. And it would take a while for millions of people including me to get used to any other layout for a Sony console.... i think the 4 buttons [X O triangle and square] will stay. they should fix the analog sticks, change it a bit and it would be fine by me, of course wireless by default. cables are so last century...

blue ray sounds and looks pretty cool...

I agree that the actual layout of the controller is perfect, however like you I also wish they fix the analog a bit and touch the whole controller up a knotch.

arent the [cross - circle - square - triangle] symbols copyright? that means that they'll never let them go...

i also hope it's quiet. Ps2 can get very loud sometimes, even when watching DVD's which, heat-wise, shouldn't really push it... u know what i mean... it is a bit irritating...

Really? Mine is silent, like if I put my ear to it I can hear a whirl, but otherwise the fan doesn't register a blip. Now, the DVD drive on the other hand heh.. *crunch* *whirl* *crunch* *crunch* *pop*

As for the dual shock..swap the D-pad with the left analog stick, change their thumb grips a little, and change L2 and R2 to triggers :D

People Saying DS2 is anything near perfect in any sense, makes the same mistake as people saying that the bicycle has reached it's ultimate form and can't be improved, or people talking about how the "modern" combustion engine, has reached a state where only minor improvements can be made (wow, long sentence or what? :) ). Just because something has been the same for a long time, and a lot of people have gotten used to it, doesn’t mean it's done or made the best way it can be.

I can think of so many possible improvements to the DS2, I don't even know where to start, so I won't.
But just think about it, the Playstation joypad is just a SNES pad with handles, the SNES pad that owe a lot to the NES pad, which in turn is derived from the old Game and Watch handhelds.
How can a joypad whose design origins are in a handheld LCD game be, the be all and end all, of videogame controllers?

The Dual Shock, a SNES pad with handles and two analogues slapped on as an afterthought, is hardly ideal.
For starters, move the analogues, the most sensitive part of the pad, up in to main position where they belong, and not down south of arthritis.

The real question is not if Cell will be in PS3, but, will it be used as the basis of the graphics processing unit. the patent would indicate YES, as the GPU is a modified Cell with Pixel Engines, Image Caches, CRTCs.

Also in question is, how efficient is Cell, and how much actual performance can it get, how many sub-processors on the PS3-specific Cell CPU, GPU. etc

Afterall, if Cell is going into mass production in early 2004.. he will have to reveal the specs on it before that time.
Two things:

1) There's a logical disconnect in your reasoning above, mass production of a device and public announcement of its specs aren't connected to each other.

2) Where does the 2004 timeframe come from? I mean, it's like everytime I see a post on this, it's moving forward in time. (not exactly what you'd expect from a project of that size ;))

If you're serious with your MP in H1/04 prediction, may I ask what process that would be targetted at and what devices all those Cells will be used in?

For Sony's sake (like i really care but lets just say for them) i would like them to NOT reveal PS3 specs until, at most, 12 months before U.S. release.

PS1 specs were revealed in late 1993, iirc. about 1 year before its Dec 1994 release in Japan.

PS2 specs were revealed March 1999, 1 year before the release in Japan but 19 months before U.S. release, that is TOO long. competitors could catch up to PS3 specs if revealed that soon.

No?

Take a look at the topic title.

And I think your Microsoft stock is making money. Go sell.

The dreamy dreams to make money, which is exactly what Kutaragi did for Sony. And it's exactly what's going to happen with PS3.

You know whats your problem Paul? You are using all the wrong points in the wrong topics. If you had put the money thing in your XBOX MS EVIL rant, that would have made more sense.

But as of this topic, it is not about money but more about how Sony is intending to realise their dreamy dreams. Yes money is still the end route of this dreamy dreams, but whats important now is how they go about starting their dreamy dreams.

Oh and let me guess, you have a time-machine and can see all this? You know nothing - zero - about what's going to happen with Kutaragi's vision, noone does; stop acting like you do
Ah you see, that part you quoted, was from my hypothesis(which i deleted since it sounded rude to you), rather than my actual views. Never have i said without a doubt that Cell would fail, just skeptical.

If i had a time machine, i am better off doing things to make me rich and powerful, than to check out Cell future. ;)

Unlike him I don't claim Kutaragi's visions to not come true. So he has nothing against me
Unlike you, i can read, and i understand that it was healthy skepticism which i have always been maintaining.

YEAH... but thats not the point u see....... come on how long have u been here? u know how he is... just play nice...
Pot calling kettle black...

That BR cartridge looks fugly reminds me of IOMEGA ZIP carts

Well, then lucky for you the final BluRay discs won't have them.

Not just lucky for me but for the majority of consumers ie CD and DVD.

Ever heard of a caddy?
Optical discs have been screaming for a cartridge since the very beginning. Not only does a cartridge alleviate the problem of scratches and dirt on the disc surface, it also allows for much higher density of information, because of less need for error correction and thinner protection layer.
PC-Engine where have you heard about BR-discs not having a cartridge?
It would seem very strange to me, since there is already retail players out there, which play cartridges. Why would they suddenly change it, and more importantly how? They wouldn't be able to keep the high capacity and reliability.

You were the one who brought up the thing with me and Sony stock thing.

Never have i said without a doubt that Cell would fail, just skeptical.

Than you must have screwed up on your typing,

Sony makes money from PS3/remains no.1, yet the dreamy dreams are fAr less than realized.

How do you know the derams will be far less from realized? Noone does.

Unlike you, i can read, and i understand that it was healthy skepticism which i have always been maintaining.

It's one thing to be skeptic, but it's another to pretend to see the future with this quote.

Lets say, fast forward 4yrs from now, Sony makes money from PS3/remains no.1, yet the dreamy dreams are fAr less than realized.

Noone knows if all his dreams will happen, I think not all of his dreams will happen; the basic stuff will happen though. But I still don't say that it won't happen, because it damn well could.
