Yamauchi : GC successor not coming soon, not shown at 05 E3

FUD

I'll be surprised if Nintendo doesn't release a next-gen console.

Frankly, Yamauchi says a lot of crap and while he undoubtedly still has a close relationship with the company he isn't in charge. We can only guess as to how much his influence is still felt within the company.

What you're looking at there is not the original source but rather a summary of an interview by Nihon Keizai Shimbun - which incidentally is the same newspaper that caused both NCL and NOA to reiterate that it is working on a next gen system and that this system will be shown at E3 2005.

Also, you don't read Japanese.

Yes it was.

The confusion comes from bad translations.

> Just what if the consle that was unveiled at E3 wasn't thier console and
> was merely a version of what MS is working on

Please go away.

He's always been opposed to Sega's competion. When Sega pulled out of the hardware market he focused his love on Xbox.

Nintendo has said repeatedly they are working on next-generation hardware, and it will be released at the same time as the competition. ATI has confirmed they are creating a GPU for the system. ATI also said they are making two different GPUs for Nintendo and MS. What Yamauchi said seems to conflict with everything else, but for now this seems to be the way things stand.

ATI did not say what that the nintendo GPU was specifically for. Yes they are working on a chip for nintendo, but never came out and said it was for their next home console, while coming out and saying that the other processor was going to be used in Xbox 2. At least i don't recall anyone from ATI saying the chip for nintendo was specifically for GC 2.

Besides, just what would you expect to be different between those chips in the future? ATI has already started rolling features form flipper into the current ATI GPU's. The biggest difference feature wise between current ATI chips and flipper is the embedded memory and a few other features.

I heard Miyamoto is working together with new Nintendo staff to create new Nintendo characters.

Maybe a Nintendo Sports Line? That would certainly help them out, IMO.

I think they already tried that on n64 and start of gamecube, and only the ones that starred mario did well.(and the ones that star mario wouldn't go over well with the typical sports crowd)

BTW, is E3 in 17 days? If so, I guess doom 3 won't be out before E3.

They had no real sports line-up of their own, in the sense that EA, Sega, 989, or Microsoft have had, going back at least as far as SNES, if not further, (if ever). They've done sporadic sports games, most of which were pretty bad, and any sports titles they've had this generation and n64 were also available for their competition, so there is no real reason for sports fans to choose Nintendo over Microsoft or Sony when picking hardware. Except for the Mario games, which as you stated don't really count as "sports gamse" to the "sports crowd". If Nintendo worked on developing a good perenial line of football, basketball, etc, games, they could go a long way to rectifying that problem, (which is a long ways from saying they actually WILL).

I know a group that has pitched sports products to nintendo, and thus far they haven't been interested. At least for now nintendo isn't interested in starting up a sports lineup. Basically the same level of interest they have for online games.

Not to mention that Yamauchi is retired and has no say in what Nintendo do anymore. Again this is from the shinbun sun, its about as trust worthy in its conclusions/translations as The News of The World.

Wow... I think the earth is going to come to a halt... I actually agree with DM on one trivial little fact! :p

His description of Yamauchi's position is pretty spot on... The day Yamauchi dies is the day that Nintendo will no longer feel his influence... You really have no clue how Japanese corporation function do you?

That aside, he's pretty far off on everything else... :p

While the paper has taken several quotes out of context, I think the general reaction of the gaming industry press has really blown the whole thing out of proportion...

Well, what else could it be for? GBA2? Maybe, but then again IBM has confirmed they are working on the CPU for "N5" or whatever it will be called. The point is, the hardware is being developed.

I don't know what the difference will be, but I imagine Nintendo and MS would have different requirements for a GPU in a next-generation system.

that Ken Griffey game
NBA Courtside
Excitebike
Waverace
1080
may have had an exclusive soccer game from Konami, or at least the best version
and I think they had some exclusive wrestling games

That's pretty much it for nintendo sports.

No worries, I'm sure he has enough crap for both.

BTW: Did you mean "unsufferable"? I got a random image of him falling off a surfboard... ;)

Did any official press releases from IBM actually say they are making a CPU for the sucessor to the gamecube? I'm pretty sure they never gave any details on what the platform was. I'm starting to think it's not another console, but could be the next gameboy a few years from now.

I don't know what the difference will be, but I imagine Nintendo and MS would have different requirements for a GPU in a next-generation system.

Possibly, but the only difference I could forsee would be either less features than MS as we all know whatever chip MS uses will have all the functionality supported by DX 10, or different features form MS, but in that case what could they add that isn't supported the top of the line PC hardware at that time... Well to be honest I'm thinking it could be for the next GBA, which would have even smaller gamecube hardware a few years from now.

...

What Yamauchi said

来年のE3を目標にゲームキューブを母体とした新しいゲーム機を新提案する - 高機能の"次世代ゲーム機"ではないユーザーが先端技術を求めないのに、次世代機などと言うのはゲームを知らない人だ

A proposal of new game machine using GameCube as its "mother" at next year's E3. - Not a high performance "Next Generation Console".

Users do not demand latest high technology. Anyone speaking of "next generation console" doesn't understand gaming business.

Yamauchi actually taunts SCEI and MS for developing next-gen consoles!!! And says Nintendo will release some kind of parasite game machine that connects to GameCube! This is exactly what Iwata stated earlier.

Nintendo is not showing GC2 at 05 E3; it is showing some kind of peripheral that is to be used with GC. Unless this is Nintendo's 128X.... But then again, Yamauchi already clarified that it would not be a next-gen stuff...

I guess Nintendo's E3 machine is an iQue that sits beneath GC and plays back old N64 games on disc.

Why bother with that when they already did a decent N64 emulator for Gamecube(OOT/Majoras Mask).
