Yes some where like thta . But the ones grabbing headlines were the final fantsy movie real time graphics one , which looked horrible and they have yet to make a game even close to that .

FWIW, and if you're talking about the PS2, no Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within demo has been shown for the PS2 unveiling. A FFTSW demo was shown for Nvidia Quadro DCC and one for the GSCube.
The PS2 only had the now bad looking "FFVIII ballroom demo".
