Rumor: Xbox 360 CES Announcements Leaked

MS = SOLD= shipped to retailers from their warehouse so I'd guess 10.4 million minus whatever retailers have purchased for current stock which means 10.4 million in consumers homes by what 4-8 weeks tops?

We will have to see. What's their base number ? Should be something closer to 5 mil (counting free Xbox LIVE users).

base number?

ummm 10 million before you know it

Ha ha. Doesn't work that way. Before holidays, were they at 4.5 mil in NA ? What is their run rate ?
(Did they announce anything ?)

EDIT: Sorry for bugging you, TapIn. It's just that I'm kinda tied up right now. Otherwise, I would have looked up the numbers myself.

actually probably matters more to you... ;)

I don't have any financial interests in what MSFT does, unless my mutual funds and 401k have holdings.

Does the number of PSN accounts matter, considering they're free and you can make as many as you want?

no problem Patsu.... they gave no details other than "we have sold 10.4 million Xbox 360s in 37 countries" with a graphic displaying it.... he (Robbie Bach) did not comment further.... sorry.

Ouch ! not even a larger HDD for recording TV ? Also they are pre-announcing this for Fall 2007 ? That's a bit later than I expected. Must be taking some time to negotiate the content.

Since sold = shipped...
Any mention of how many actual consumers ? (A number smaller than 10.4 mil but larger than 5 mil)

Not this again? it's sold in 37 countries, it's impossible to track if it's sold to actual customers. all you can track are re-orders and delivery to retail.

Does anyone ever questions sony's quoted numbers?

Ok then. Good show. Can't wait for Sony's and Nintendo's trains. Year 2007 will be great for all 3 vendors.

MS should have some internal estimates for key markets. It's just that they didn't (want to) share it with us.

Why would they announce a bigger HDD for recording TV when the service is nearly 9 months away? Good way to gut sales. Same reason no SKU differences or price drops were announced. You want to clear current inventory and keep current sales strong until you make such a move.

I wonder if there's a way a MCE PC might be required as storage for DVR functionality. DVRs, especially for HD, start typically at like 250 GB of storage.

DVR wouldn't go with a console anyways. You couldn't game at the same time it's trying to record something.

TV stuff which will be added to dashboard

yes I think larger HDD is just a matter of time... most certainly available as an accessory to swap out with the current one or perhaps a USB?.

Electronics Show (CES), Microsoft Corp. today announced a new solution that will bring together two of its leading entertainment products, the Xbox 360™ gaming console and the Microsoft® TV IPTV Edition software platform, to create a unique digital entertainment offering. IPTV on Xbox 360™ is expected to be available to consumers by holiday season 2007 and will be offered by providers that are deploying TV services over broadband networks based on the IPTV Edition software platform. The solution was unveiled during Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates’ CES keynote address Jan. 7.

The integration of a video gaming console with Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services is intended to deliver a first-of-its-kind entertainment experience. IPTV on Xbox 360 is expected to give consumers all the advantages of an advanced TV service along with the benefits of next-generation gaming, as well as unique new capabilities that the integrated solution brings. Xbox Live®, the largest online social network in the living room, will be seamlessly integrated into the experience, providing consumers with a wide range of community-based features, such as voice chat, sending and receiving text and voice messages, and accessing Xbox Live Marketplace, all while watching TV. For example, while a TV viewer is enjoying his favorite football game, he can receive a message from a friend inviting him to a join voice chat while watching the game, or to play a game of their own with EA SPORTS™ “Madden NFL 07” on Xbox Live.

“Both Xbox 360 and Microsoft TV IPTV Edition by themselves deliver unique and exciting entertainment experiences today, but IPTV on Xbox 360 is truly a solution that is greater than the sum of its parts and will enable even more exciting experiences to delight consumers, service providers, content providers and game developers alike,” said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division. ”By integrating these industry-leading solutions, we are delivering on our promise to drive innovation and enable new connected entertainment experiences for consumers in a way that only Microsoft can.”

With the addition of IPTV Edition functionality, Xbox 360 builds on its position as the centerpiece for high-definition digital entertainment in the living room, offering the best in next-generation games, TV and movies along with the ability to share experiences online with the industry-leading online game network, Xbox Live. Xbox 360 continues to extend its lead with more than 10.4 million consoles sold in 37 countries since launch.

The Microsoft TV IPTV Edition software platform enables a best-in-class digital TV service that offers advanced features such as instant channel zapping, a rich and responsive user interface, video on demand with branded video-on-demand storefronts, digital video recording and high-definition television. Some of the world’s largest telecommunications service providers have chosen IPTV Edition as their IPTV software solution, with scale commercial deployments currently under way with AT&T in the United States, BT Group PLC in the United Kingdom, Deutsche Telekom in Germany, T-Online in France and Swisscom in Switzerland.

Yes you could. DVR requires horsepower only if the incoming video signal is uncompressed (e.g. plain old analog TV signal), and you need to compress it to MPEG-2 or some subset of MPEG-4. In the IPTV scenario, the signal arrives from the net already compressed - somewhere a bandwidth ot 5 Mbps was mentioned (for one HD or four SDTV streams). Given that games must work without a HDD at all, they should be able to live with a constant background writing of 5 Mbps to the HDD. If they limit the record-while-you-play functionality to SDTV, it becomes negligeable.

All these plans sound really good for everybody who lives in those large countries. I wonder if we will ever get any of that to where I live, I would most certainly like to rent HD-movies right now, but tough luck. I should be able to just log in to any marketplace I choose and buy whatever I want. Now I'm very pessimistic on my changes to get access to all that stuff, as long as I live in this tiny country. Man that pisses me off!

Dude, make a US live account and use your VISA card. Works just fine here in Denmark :)

Really can you rent and buy HD-movies?
I know that people can enter into the U.S. marketplace to download demos and stuff, but I was under the impression that the movie and TV service is out of reach...
