Xbox One Slim

I like the look of the slim. $300 would be a great price for 4k bluray. Must have the latest hdmi spec too. Could be a very nice media box.

@davygee and at that point ms continues to fall behind, or even falls behind faster.

this is my problem with just a slim, it either needs to be substantially cheaper, or add additional power, be upgradable, something, I don't think hdr and 4k streaming is enough.

slims worked before, but the consoles were considered to be successful anyway, was just making them 'nicer'

I totally agree. At the moment the XBox One is consistently cheaper than the PS4 worldwide yet is selling much less. MS needs to dramatically reduce the cost, although I mentioned that it will reduce the XBox One cost by $50 I don't think it is enough, as I fully expect Sony to drop the PS4 price by $50 as well.

Going by rumoured specs etc (although we will find out in a few hours the truth), it looks like the XBox One S is really only a sliming down and thats it. Yes it's got a bigger HDD and can stream 4K, but is it really going to get sales going? I doubt it.

Sony has MS over a barrel and unless MS does something really drastic/dramatic like included a 4K BR Drive and releases it at $299 for the 2TB version, then they are in trouble.

I predict that they are deliberately pricing it at 299 so that when December hits they can suddenly have a limited time 249 USD version for Christmas. People that aren't typically console consumers (grandpas and grandmas shopping for their grandkids, for example) won't know any better and think it's a great deal for a Christmas present.

And then after the Holidays are over, it may or may not conveniently just stay at 249 USD.

SB

Not sure why anyone expected the slim to have improved specs.

Because certain people like to set unrealistic expectations for MS products and then berate them as failures when they don't meet the fairy tale?

It's a console refresh, no different than any other console generation where the improvements in the manufacturing process allows for shrinks and increased storage without adding costs.

So you get a smaller console, that uses less power, that has more storage capacity, and can stream Netflix and Amazon in 4K at the same price point as the current console. Oh, and it's also white because a certain group of people find that the color of the console is also a "feature".

It's kinda weird how they are adding the 4K video thing. I mean you can buy cheaper 4K android TV products. And the gaming aspect of the 4K output is kinda irrelevant because not sure how good those 720p/900p games will look on a 4K display..

I do wonder if this has been added due to the rumours surounding the PS Neo? Talking about PS4K etc. They didn't know if Sony would announce the PS4K/Neo at E3 or not and they can make it less of a feature for the Neo is they already have it.

It is a feature that costs very little to include in any streaming device, but may sell more of them.

720p/900p games won't look any worse on a 4k display than 1080p display. The scaling would be identical.

If it has 4k bluray with hdr, it could make for a nice little media box with gaming capabilities.

Xbox Slim will be $299 as starting price in US.

Strong and aggressive move that will surely move units especially in US.

Definitely controlled leaks happening. All part of the game/showmanship in the internet era.

I dunno something about gaming at 720p/900p on a 4K display just bothers me...makes it hard to justify buying a 4K display for this particular piece of hardware.

That didn't seem to stop all those buying a Nintendo Wii to game on their 1080p sets at 480i.

Not really aggressive pricing at all, unless the Slim actually comes with a fully fledged 4K BR Player installed. Even at that, I fully expect the PS4 to be reduced to $299 as well. So a hard sell for them.

I don't get this talk of "4K gaming" considering you can't game at 4k on any of the latest PC GPU's that retail for $500-$800, what makes anybody think either the MS or Sony product would be able to do so?

The 4K is obviously just about video playback, not about gaming. Considering that neither the PS4 nor the XB1 currently allow for 4K streaming (because of their non-complaint video ports), it makes sense to simply upgrade to a compliant port and sell it as an added feature as part of this refresh. As you mentioned previously, there are many smaller and cheaper devices out there that provide for 4K streaming - so there is no "power" issue with either the PS4 or the XB1 in terms of 4K streaming.

I run GTA V on 'Very High' settings at 4K at 60fps. Apologies if I'm doing something wrong.

I've got to agree, and what dev is supporting it with content? In the end we're still a ways away from it if not longer. My guess is Devs would rather make prettier pixels than double them at this point (though imo HDR seems to be worth the 4k alone but then you don't need 4k content for that).

I dunno If i was going to play games on a 4K display I'd want min rendering at 1080p. Maybe I'm a little OCDish about it.
