XBox One Backwards Compatibility and Xbox One X Enhancements for X360 and OG (XO XOX BC)

I believe all publishers would love to have all of their past games available for BC. But the process takes time, so it makes sense for most to want the focus to be on the games they believe have the most potential to bring in new purchases.

Activision in particular, I imagine is really for it now if they weren't before considering that BC being made available for COD: BO2 (5 year old game) made it grab enough new sales to propel it back into the NPD top 10.

And if you look at PC, the availability of old titles doesn't restrict the sales of new titles, and if it does it's a relatively negligible effect. And remasters are sold on PC just as they are on console. Not everyone that already owns an original copy of a game buys a remaster, but quite a few do just to get a nicer looking version of a game which sometimes comes with updates to the gameplay (new Age of Empires remaster is reworking unit pathing, for example). But again, that is no different from consoles.

I was thinking about COD: Ghosts getting a lot of requests for BC despite there being an XBO version available. And I think I might know part of the reason for it. Performance (stable FPS) is absolutely essential for COD due to how much it focuses on competitive multiplayer. In other words, performance consistency is far more important than graphical bling. COD: Ghosts exhibited a LOT of inconsistent performance on XBO, especially after the DLC packs (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-performance-drops-on-cod-ghosts-patch ). It might be that there are fans of the game that want a BC version in hopes that it would offer more consistent framerates than the XBO version of the game.

VGTech published a thrice framerate comparison showing the XB1 BC version, X360 version and original XB1 version at the same time.

It performs better than 360 in general. Mostly 60 ala XO version. Some scenes are still too taxing for a locked 60.

Just to make sure I'm following...

From what I've seen of the three so far the Xbox One version is the best looking and smoothest, no surprise there. However what is surprising is how different scenes can change the performance positions.

Early in the video: the XboxOneBC-360 is the smoothest, then closely followed by the Xbox One versions and in last place is the X360 native.
Middle of the video: The Xbox One and XboxOneBC-360 are very similar with only the X360 dropping frame rates.
Late in the video (~5 minutes): the Xbox One is the smoothest, then the XBoxOneBC-360 and in last place is the X360 native.
Later in the video (~6 minutes): the XboxOneBC-360 is the smoothest, then followed by the X360 version very closely followed by the Xbox One.

Nice comparison. Now only an xbox one s is missing ... might have some better fps at the xbox one version.
if xbox one x can hit stable 60fps in those bc titles? It shouldn't be the GPU that limits here.
And with this ramdisc feature, e.g. textures in mass effect titles should pop up immediately :)
I really hope they use this feature for BC titels. I mean, the whole game could get into the ramdisc in theory ... but I don't know how much memory the "simulated"-360-OS takes up.

a ramdisk would be great if they could get it working -there isn't a reason it shouldn't when desktop PCs offer ramdisk utilities without an issue-

two of the most recent bc titles analysed.

BC wins this time, although the game is kind of stable in the original.

Tough game to run on the X360 at its fullest. BC version is an slightly improvement, but maybe only the Xbox One X version is going to run at a stable 60 fps.

There must have been a recent update on the Backwards Compatibility as I had 19 games queued up for updates and none of them seemed to be the entire game. I don't think this is tied to the Alpha Dashboard either.

Wasn't the entire Halo series already BC? Maybe I'm mistaking it with Gears.

No, you're thinking of Gears. However, they announced at the BC launch that Halo 3 support was coming. At least they finally followed through.
