XBox 360 Price Cut/60GB model*

after all it worked so well for sony....

I don't know why they didn't just go right to 120GB the cost differential has to be pretty minimal.

They may differentiate with software, services and bundling too. I think we will see significant upgrade in these areas in E3. They also need to adjust their strategies to target the casuals. I am expecting more partnerships (e.g., network operators, bundled services, hardware partners) to push 360 out.

Because then they would have to bump the Elite to something like 320-400 GB, and that would be expensive.

60GB 360 officially announced by MS

http://kotaku.com/5024633/microsoft-announce-60gb-360-confirm-20gb-price+cut

Redmond, Washington—Microsoft is giving consumers more gigabytes for their buck. The company today announced an Xbox 360® console with triple the storage space of the original console, but for the same price of $349 (U.S.) estimated retail price.

Available in retail stores in the U.S. and Canada starting in early August, the upgraded Xbox 360 will include a 60GB hard drive for storing the growing wealth of digital entertainment available for the console, including music, movies, television shows, and game content. In addition, Microsoft today dropped the price of its 20GB Xbox 360 console in the U.S. and Canada to just $299 (U.S.) (ERP) while supplies last, a savings of $50.

"We know consumers need more and more space to store the amazing digital content Xbox 360 offers, and we're giving it to them at no extra charge," said Albert Penello, Xbox director of product management at Microsoft. "No one device offers the depth and breadth of entertainment that Xbox 360 can deliver, and now you'll have three times the storage to manage all that great content."

Xbox 360 is just one of three Xbox 360 gaming and entertainment systems Microsoft offers. Microsoft's Xbox 360 Arcade, which comes with a 256MB memory unit and five Xbox LIVE Arcade games, is a value for the whole family for $279 (U.S.) (ERP), and the premium Xbox 360 Elite console is available with a 120GB hard drive for $449 (U.S.) (ERP).

August is also the rumored release date of their new Jasper (65nm CPU & GPU) model. So the 60GB model is most likely it.

This is going to be a looong generation (enough to finish those trilogies! :p ).

Aye, I would also bet on it being Jasper.

So does this slowly but effectively mean the 360 comes standard with a hard drive? Is the Core even a factor anymore now and in the future?
Will devs start making more use of the "standard" hard drive.

No, because the 20GB is being phased out.

BTW, I'm (fairly) certain there'll still be a across the board price cut guys, it'll just come later this year now.

Interesting that the 60GB is slated for early August, while the 20GB is already 299. I hope they dont expect a major run on the 20, or they'll run out?

Oh I also dont know if it's been posted here, but at least this week there are some nice gift card deals along with the 20GB. You get a $25 gift card at Target with purchase of the pro, and a $30 card+football magazine at Circuit City, although unfortunately I believe you have to purchase NCAA Football 09 as well to get the deal at CC.

BTW I dont have the link offhand, but the other semi-confirmed rumor via leaked email to retail is that the 60GB will of course replace the 20GB sold separately, and will be called the "Live starter pack" and will include three months of Live, headset, and ethernet cable for $99. Then the 120GB is meant to drop to $149.

I see a lot of people at forums criticizing the high HDD prices, but considering the headset theoretically is $15, and the three months live has a $12 value, and the same email brags about an 18% retail margin on the item, (wholesale cost=82) you could see it as the 60GB HDD netting MS maybe $55 which I dont think is too bad. Of course then you could get into the fact the headset and Live are probably trivial costs, but anyway.

Wal Mart sells the 120 HD all the time for $172, so I'm thinking the 120 may see a street price of around $139, which also isn't too bad, although of course you can get I believe a 320GB HDD for your PS3 for $99, there's no comparison there (then again, that route isn't for casuals).

Anyways the MS accessory prices remain high, but if the rumor is true at least they are better than they were before. They also really need to do something about that ridiculous wi-fi adapter price now. And of course there was also the rumor of built in wi-fi coming to the Elite, but as long as it took the 60GB HDD to arrive I'm not holding my breath. Perhaps that could be part of the supposed Blu Ray Elite.

I imagine you guy's have discussed the logic of this to death already but I missed it,so to clarify..they are keeping the Core and getting rid of the 20 GB?

Yes the 60GB version will replace the 20GB version at the 349$ pricetag and the remaining 20GB units will be sold at 299$, which I quess are almost out already... In any case buying the core while there are still 299$ 20GB units around is probably the worst thing you can do in life.

If you look around you can get the xbox 360 pro (20gig ) for about $270 . I think if they keep those sales going on through july they will sell out alot of the pro units .

I wonder how many there are left in the states . 400-500 thousand ?

Then I think we will see a price cut in november on the arcade unit (not the 60 gig pro).

I have a launch unit and wouldn't mind upgrading , however i will wait untill after the holidays

If they don't drop the price across the board on all SKUs, then they'll have to do another price drop for the 60gb early next spring. It doesn't make sense to stagger price drops. I don't consider today's a price drop. It's Microsoft's first clearance sale for one SKU. I'm sure all 20gb SKUs will be sold out by the first of September. I'm going to sell my 20gb system to help pay for an Elite(Jasper). Though I might go with the the new $400 Elite from Amazon.

so..

1) $449 Elite (HDMI/Digital audio dongle ($50 MS value), online headset, HDMI and Component cables, 120 GB HDD, CAT5 network cable)

2) $349 Pro (HDMI -no cable, component cable, online headset, 60GB HDD, CAT5 network cable)

2b) $299 Pro (HDMI -no cable, component cable, online headset, 20GB HDD, CAT5 network cable) Clear out the channel, while supplies last

3) $279 arcade (256MB Mem card, 5 arcade games on disc, HDMI output but no HD cables in box, no headset)

my guess by Holiday 08
1) $399
2) $299
3) $229

with a change in the peripheral storage prices to reflect the drop and differences.

I purchased an Arcade unit (2nd system for house) last month and I received GTAIV for $10 from Game stop reflecting essentially a $50 price drop in theory. (traded it in for $48 since I already owned it)

I would have to agree. A $50 drop across the board for all SKUs by the Holiday sounds good, but can Microsoft afford it by then?

BTW, Elite and Pro(20gb & 60gb) both include a ~15ft CAT5 network cable.

I really don't see how they can not afford it. they need to boost HW sales and reach that next segment of the population IMO, although software sales are a strong as ever (best of the generation).

In theory they could try to ride it out til spring when the market slows or they get closer to a Sony drop,

Well the rumor going around is the 60 gig unit is lighter than the 20 gig unit by about 2lbs . So that could be a result of 65nm across the board . With that you get a cheaper gpu , cheaper cooling set up , cheaper power supply.

So perhaps they can afford the price drop.

I would think the weight reduction is mostly from the external power adapter. I'm not sure they would change the heatsinks drastically since they would be ordering en masse anyway. I mean, how much has the listed weight of the box changed when they introduced the extra GPU heatpipe & fins? Or when they removed the heatpipe for the falcon CPU :?:
