This is just MS hedging their bets IMO. They just want to have something ready in case Sony starts losing the format wars, or for when HD-DVD drives are not that expensive in late 2008 or so.

I agree...All companies do this. They just want to be ready when the time comes.
However right now, I think it's too early to for MS to be pushing HD-DVD. Even though HD-DVD sales are as expected and Bluray is less than expected in the States, but the war is far from over. Personally, I rather have MS spend their time and money on their internet TV and expand LIVE, instead of subsidizing the HD-DVD on each 360. But then again, maybe they just want a little push to help kill off Bluray.
