http://www.digitimes.com/systems/a20070627PD217.htmlThe Blu-ray Disc (BD) Association has announced that its members will launch a sales promotion in the third quarter of the year by bundling five free BD movies with sales of either BD players or PlayStation 3 (PS3) consoles, with the five movies worth US$100-150 based on current market prices, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
This is a marketing campaign to boost the BD standard in competition with HD DVD, the sources pointed out. The occasion for the sales promotion is the BD Association's celebration of the anniversary of launching BD products in the North American market, the sources indicated. Members of the association, including Sony, Pioneer, Samsung, Philips and Matsushita Electric Industrial, as well as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and six other leading movie studios in Hollywood will sponsor the marketing event, the sources noted.
The offer is of course designed to help promote the BD brand but could it work the other way around for the PS3?
This together with a price cut of the PS3 in the third quarter and some new good games, the PS3 might end up as a quite attractive deal in some peoples eyes.
The question is if Sony might see this as a stop gap solution that will help them through the 3rd quarter and save the price drop for the 4rth quarter? I don´t think that would be a wise move, a lot of gamers are not that keen on HD-movies and would rather have some bundled games.
