Wii impression thread

Ah! But see ... instead of the two games, you could just download the motorstorm demo, GT:HD demo, and several other demos ... for free!

Yeah man, spend 500dollars just to play demo's...

I dont understand those lame price comparisons. They are just wrong. For 250 you have a wii + game. For 500 you have a ps3 with nothing (no sane person spends 500dollars on a console to only play demo's). You can keep counting things up to make Wii look more expansive, but it just isnt. Well, except if your looking for a BR player or if HD is a must for you but than the Wii clearly isnt aimed at you.

Well, to me PS3/XB360 are the "cool gfx + HD/BR + whizzbang stuff" devices, while Wii is a toy. And that's exactly what I wanted, so I'm fine.

I like great gfx, but gameplay and fun are at least two orders of magnitude more important to me personally.

I think he means he doesnt think its very important that a game looks good to have fun with it.

Exactly. Fun first, looks second. Of course, if it can give both, no problems with that.

But in case of Wii, it's really all about the body activity for me. I love it, it's like training with fun included.

I had a huge blast with Wario Ware : Smooth Moves this weekend. The various poses to execute with the Wiimote are really ridiculous, but extremely fun both to watch and to play.

So far, I'm really happy with the "Wii60" combo.

I was just shocked at how much money he spent, basically, buying that Wii. Looking at it realistically though, obviously, you can play Wii for much less money. First of all, drop the Component cable. It hardly helps anyway, especially not with Zelda (well, from what I've heard anyway). So probably, he should have been done at 330 dollars for a Wii with Wii-Sports and Zelda. The rest of the money I would have kept in my pocket.

Don't make too light of the demos though. They are great value (again, this holds for the 360 as well as the PS3).

I guess it just struck me that the Wii isn't that much value yet by itself. You really want to get it for the software, not the hardware or the built in features. But I'm going to bow out of this thread, because my 'impression that the Wii is expensive' isn't really the point of this thread. ;)

So I apologise to all in this thread, and let you please carry on.

Well in the end software is the reason why you buy a console right? You can have great hardware at a great price but if there isnt any software to make use of it its still not worth the money.

I dont think its wrong to discuss and to some extent I think it fits the topic becase some might want to know if the Wii is worth their money. But you do have to own, or atleat played on the console to get a idea weater its worth its money or not because the controller has to make the differance and you cant experiance that from video's or reviews, you really have to feel it yourself.

Wii:

Console+
Game+
Controller=$250
+1 game=$300
+1 controller=$340
+1 component=$380 (official Nintendo cables are $40)
+cheapo rechargeable AA kit=$400

PS3:

Console+
Controller=$500
+2 games=$620
+1 controller=$670
+1 cheapo USB cable=$680
+1 HDMI=$730

So for the equivalent "value" in accessories - second controller, controller recharging capabilities for all controllers, two games, and the best available cables - the PS3 is actually $330 more than Wii.

Which is more than the price difference between the base SKUs.

OOPS!

Edit: This also doesn't take into account the fact that Wii's $250 base price also nets you built in WiFi, whereas the $500 PS3 does not. Add $100 to the PS3 overall price if you want WiFi (either for the $600 SKU or for a wireless gaming gateway) - and you should. Now you're lookking at more than double the price for the PS3 setup.

Yes, Wii is definitely so very expensive, especially compared to the PS3's great value!

Note that I deliberately ignored the blu-ray capabilities because Wii doesn't have that option, period. Also, it does not relate to playing games in any way at all.

Because PS1 doesn't get the newest games... Seriously if PS1 still had a constant stream of quality games then I'd bet that most people who own one would still use it regularly. Of course that doesn't mean they wouldn't also have the newest console. But it does underscore the fact that great gameplay is what makes games, great graphics are a bonus.

Do you honestly believe that? LOL. Seriously, PS1?!?!? Everyone I know (casual and hardcore alike) laugh at PS1 graphics.

I just happend to see psx madden a couple of days back and it really doesnt looks that bad. I was like, well this looks a bit jaggy but it didnt bother me or anything. Sure it will look outdated but if it still had good games coming out I doubt alot of people would be really botherd by it. I dont hear anyone laugh about ps2 gfx now we have x360 and ps3.

I remember a console last generation that for a long time had little except hardware and built-in features to recommend it over the market leader. I don't remember that turning out so hot for the new, powerful console.

I'm not saying X360 is going to be a disaster or anything. I'm just saying that when it comes to consoles, software is the main reason to buy one. It's not like video cards where the main thing is the most fillrate and ALUs for your buck, because all video cards play the same games.

You do realize that HDMI is digital right?

Meaning you dont need to buy monstercables, because everything either works perfectly, or it doesnt work at all. And you can buy a HDMI cable for $5-10

The amount of population that knows this is very small. Can't count the number of times I've seen people walking around with Pure AV/Monster HDMI cables because they're literally told they HAVE to buy these cables for thier new HDTV/DVD player/PS3/etc.....

I haven't seen an HDMI cable *that* cheap. =/ I'm not talking about Monster cables either. PS3 Monster HDMI cables are $99, regular TV Monster HDMI is like $120+ or something like that.

I work at a Circuit City btw, I'm going by all MSRPs.

The cheapest HDMI cable I've seen at work is $50 so I went by that price.

Wii doesn't have a build in network adapter, so if you want to use cable you have to get an adapter for it. On another note you failed to mentioned anything about storage. Wii only comes with 512 MB of storage. You need to purchase a large SD card to match the PS3 20 GB of storage and that does add to the cost. Storage is rather important for games when downloadable games and extra contents are now a big part of gaming.

Not that I'm jumping into this silly cost/penis waving contest, but HDMI cables are cheap IF you know where to get them from. Try monoprice.com for instance. And for the Wii, you could always get the cheap 3rd party component from playasia.com but I don't know about the quality of that one. The monoprice cable will be excellent.

I bought two for 5€ each a few weeks ago. Seems like they rip you off like hell over there.

lol thats about a million times more colorfull than on my philips crt tv. But I always set up my tv with little color. I sometimes see people where the colors are jumping of the screen in normal programs. That isnt pleasant to watch at all. Though it will probably look better with zelda. Looks really nice judging from the screenshot.
