Why the discrepency in XB360 screenshots

I posted this on another thread which got locked, but I'm still confused!
---

I've just thought of something that confuses me. Up to now, XB360 screenshots have been jaggie-ridden. This we understand is because they're not on final hardware.

But GOW isn't. GOW looks very clean. Why is this? Why is GOW showing us jag-free imagery, whereas other game screenshots aren't? If these GOW images are the usual non-realtime promo renderings, why isn't every other developer doing the same?

I can't understand why XB360 games are looking in all rather naffy so far, as even current gen promo shots are fanatastically AA'd!

gow wa run on 6800sli set up , the rest were on alpha kits which is one x800xt so i would think the 6800 sli set up would have some fillrate to burn and they could run them with fsaa on it .

At least in my opinion

Probably because as seen at E3, it was running on a PC with a couple 6800's in it. Most of the other stuff, excluding the Alan Wake demo was on the development kits, the Alan Wake one i believe was running on prototype R520 silicon in a PC.

Maybe, since they're not running on the Xbox 360 GPU yet, they aren't getting the AA for free, so they are leaving it out, until they get it for free.

Perhaps Epic are simply one of the few developers who actually realise what a difference AA/AF makes to promo screenshots.

i think gow is the furthest along being made on an engine that has had alot of work put into it these last 3 years

Why the discrepency in XB360 screenshots?

my guesses:

senario #1: some screenshots are from prerendered CGI, while others are realtime off of Alpha dev kits.

senario #2: some screenshots are from versions of games that were built on R350/R360 (Radeon 9800 Pro / XT) graphics, while others are from versions of games built on R420/R480 (Radeon X800/X850)

That must be it. Cause i don't know why they would bother about framerates when doing screenshots.

Funny, at least press release shots of Xbox games had AA applied in massive 1600x1200 screenshots. Surely they could just apply AA themselves at the time of the screenshot for X360 games.

that God of War trailer was awesome. I don't remember any jaggies either.

Do you mean gears of war? Damn acronyms! :D

Actually I also noticed that alot shots when downsized from their native resolution introduces alot of jaggies that aren't in the original image. When you view them in their actual resolution in internet explorer then the jaggies disappear.

Compare the image in this screen before and after you blow it up.

the only thing is how many of these are press shots ? ALot of these seem to come from trailers . About 80%

THe thing about gow is the fact that there was a huge article in game informer and the day time pic coems from that .

Other than that the rest is in the dark which should help hide the jaggies

Exactly. We've even seen PS2 promo shots with 16x AA! I think jvd's right though that these images come from the trailers and aren't specifically rendered for game promotion.

ah... that makes sense. :)

Maybe they're using 4x TAA for the trailer, thus you can't see the AA effect in a single shot. ;)

BTW

there is a few more

They all look rather painted to me, especially the top one. Are you sure these aren't artists impressions? thogh they do look nice and I'd love to see artist-like renderings next-gen

The first and second looks like painting (if they are,I dont know), but the third I think it is in engine ( look like speedtree demo) the 4 seems close to a pic from a mag (but it is not the same)so I think it is in engine too.

I really wonder how long GoW will be... there is so much attention to detail for these released shots, the game might not actually be that long. :?
