What are you playing now? [2007-2018]

Will soon start playing The Surge
It's supposed to be a futuristic Dark Souls with Exoskeletons
what is your rig, Davros? You seem to have a pretty fast PC.

I am playing a bit of Total Annihilation and the games I had on my GC via emulation in Dolphin and Banished, a game that I purchased at GoG after a recommendation from @DSoup and it's quite addicting. I need to learn how to keep the citizens alive after the first snows of the harsh winters.

Been playing the Surge. Usually don't pre-order games. But got this one just because it was so cheap on PC compared to console (45 USD pre-ordered versus 60 USD). So I figured I'd reward the developer and publisher for that as I was interested in the game anyway.

The experience has been good. It's definitely easier than Dark Souls. There's less customizations you can do, so it won't be similar to Fashion Souls for the most part. There's also less side stories (NPC storyline/quests). A LOT less bosses. Smaller game world. On the flip side the level design is superb, IMO. Levels while easy to get lost in if you don't have a good sense of direction, actually make sense when imagining them potentially being actual places. I haven't yet run into a situation where I'm thinking to myself, "Why is this room here? This doesn't make any sense."

Are you implying that that was an issue with Dark Souls? afaik, from what I remember reading one of the Eurogamer articles on Dark Souls, the developers created a well sewn world where every place makes sense without abrupt changes, but I am talking on memory and it's been awhile since I read that.

Most of the time, places in Dark Souls make sense. Especially in the later games (DS3 was really good at creating believable locations that were logically connected). But even then you sometimes run into places where you are just like, what?

I mainly mentioned that because I was watching a Twitch stream where the guy was just constantly complaining about the level design (he kept getting lost). And while The Surge does have its faults, level design isn't one of them, IMO. One of his main complaints and the reason he says he kept getting lost is that a lot of the level he was in looked the same. But in a real world location similar to where he was at (industrial manufacturing and recycling) a lot of where you go is going to look similar.

I never got lost as things are generally well laid out so if you have a good sense of direction you shouldn't have any problems. And even in that area he was in, there are landmarks and locations you see occasionally while navigating around that will let you know approximately where you are once you been around it a few times.

He also had complaints about how unreasonably difficult the combat was. And that surprised me as he claims to have played Dark Souls, and IMO, Dark Souls combat is generally more difficult and more punishing. Once you understand and can recognize enemy attack patterns, just like Dark Souls, the combat becomes very easy. But unlike Dark Souls, you almost never have to fight more than 1 enemy at a time if you are careful.

I got bored as hell with ME:A and tried Prey although my son swore it was gonna be awful and refuses to try it because it has nothing to do with the original Prey game.

It's surprisingly good! The plot is solid and keeps me hooked. It has a bit too much running back and forth, but you're stuck in space so that makes sense. Also, it runs very well on my system which doesn't meet the lowest specs so bonus points. :)

It's been keeping me up at least 2 hours past my bedtime for 3 nights in a row, for me that's a big winner lately.

I've been pouring hours and hours into Player Unknown's Battlegrounds. Haven't won a game yet, but this game is very addictive. Only $30 on early access for now.

I love how you only get one life per game, it really adds to the tension and a nice change from the die, respawn, die mechanics of modern multiplayer shooters.

quite often minimum system requirements are based on "whats the slowest pc we have (usually an i3) does it run ok? yes ok lets call that that the minimum"
How fast are you able to run that CPU? I think I got it up to a little over 3GHz before the heat was too much. Not sure if that's a good result for that CPU.

As for the GPU, it's a bit slower than the GTX1050 2GB so I assume it can still run most games at lower settings. I'm really glad you're enjoying it :)

How fast are you able to run that CPU?
Ive only tried it at 3ghz (then put it back to default I will o/c when I absolutely need to)
but the cpu i had previously the q6600 (b0 stepping) some people hit 3.6ghz on air and quite a lot of people managed 3.3ghz

so I assume it can still run most games at lower settings.
I can run on high (1680x1050) I'm not getting a solid 60 but I'm getting at least 30 so games are playable
I turn off motion blur and chromatic aberration sometimes depth of field cos I hate them
I dont mind turning down shadow quality and loosing ao/ssao/hdao if I have to

I keep trying to do that, but whenever I get to driving the temptation to hit 3rd person is usually too great for me after a while.

Same. You need to put faith in the very different driving model Rockstar implemented for first person mode. Not being able to clearly see what is immediately to either side or behind you is disconcerting but it's definitely a neat experience.

Damn it, I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna play GTA V first-person the entire way through. I've played it so many times and so many ways, to think that there is a whole new GTA V experience that I've been afraid to try just because of a learning curve that makes me feel like a noob is INEXCUSABLE!

Thanks guys, I know my next game. :)
