Ways in which Nintendo can be "different" next-gen

Because Gwymweepa that would give Nintendo a disadvantage when it comes to graphics next generation. If they have to cater for every single resolution out there then it will hinder the graphical performance of the system. It's best to make a game for a handful of resolutions, such as three, and taylor to teh console's specific strength's. Even if the 640*480 had 6X AA I think the 1600*1200 resolution would have a much harder time with the pixel shading effects. I could be completely off on this and if so someone please correct me.

Alright so why not create a system ideally suited for 1600x1200 and have the machine downsample the image when using a lower resolution display? Modern PC cards crap out amazing graphics at that resolution an r500 class or whatever it is GPU would look amazing at that resolution. I think it would be worth sacraficing a wee bit of performance relative to its time (I'd imagine that with a year to refine the hardware the machine would be as capable as the Xenon GPU in ever respect but be able to run at the higher resolutions without as much of a problem).

Dunno if this has been seen or quoted before but I just picked up the December issue of Edge again and there is an interview with Nintendo's Head of European Marketing, he happens to say this as a reaply to one of the questions:

Historically we’ve gone from revolution to Evolutions. NES was a revolution, SNES was an evolution; N64 revolutions, GC Evolution, hence ‘Revolution is coming’. So where does that revolution come from? We don’t have a fourth dimension handy, waiting in the wins, so what you’re going to see is Nintendo experimenting with human interface technology, whether its touchscreen – we’ve done that a lot over the years, introducing analogue, We see this as an evolving are, and I think Nintendo can show its leadership there.

(And London-boy, no jokes about Nintendo being the first to bring the orgasmatron! ;))

Why does this scare me?

*prays Nintendo knows what its doing*

have to disagree jvd, i cant think of any games that stood out for nintendo this gen with the exception of zelda, metroid and pikmen. everything else was either a rehash sequel, available on a competing system, or not as good as the alternatives on competing systems.

things nintendo WILL do differently from sony and ms next gen

sell much less
have far fewer games
have worse games with a few exceptions
dig nintendo into a deeper hole marketshare wise

oh wait nintendo did all of this the past 2 gens

I can see Nintendo, selling something cheap like Cintiq with their next console, maybe with a new Mario Paint. It'll probably have online functionality out of the box, with large capacity Hard Disk too, perhaps we can see some of their failed experiment from the 64DD. Maybe a camera, to replace gameboy camera. And maybe a controller, that feature even less buttons than Gamecube but with new unknown feature.

Kids now days have PCs and generally online, Nintendo is taking over MS Windows with Ninty OS for kids. Why not, next gen consoles, will have more CPU power than most of today PCs.

Again its not like I'm limiting anything...why not be like a PC and have a wide variety of output resolutions? I can play a PC game anywhere from 640x480 to 1600x1200...give people the option to change their resolution depending on the display.
I'm fine with that. I was more replying to Phil's comment, as I don't think the universe of 17" monitors is that low. ;)

Not at 1600x1200 I can see, though. And regardless of resolution-switching capabilities, I don't think too many devs are going to waste the resources to aim at a resolution most of their audience won't be able to hit, or won't really care about. It would complicate the development process and may translate into worse graphics than are possible at a the lower resolutions, and to get around that...

They don't like spending money to small overall affect. ;) His core concept was right--I just think we're more of a 1280x1024 world. Hehe...
