Virtua Tennis 3: PS3 version a little better (IGN)

thanks one, the game looks great.
I saw some of the same shots over at xboxyde/playsyde, some of them have 1080 resolutions.

for example

I'm guessing they were probably downscaled from one of those odd 4000x PR resolutions. The game has always been 720p right?

edit:
Blimblim says 1080 was the resolution when he grabbed them off the site (not upscaled at all), jeuxfrance probably downscaled them. Not saying the game is 1080p now or anything, he said they could certainly be offline renders. But it is interesting.

sounds nice, that would explain the 1080p screens.
How can you tell a difference between 1080i and 1080p screens? The PS3 version is confirmed to run @ 1080i, it could as well be screenshots of this resolution.
I'm not saying that the game won't be running @ 1080p, though.

You're right, I initially meant 1080 screens not 1080p screens, but I was just asigning the p to the 1080 number after we got news of the 1080p being confirmed for the game. No point in calling them 1080i screens I suppose. :p

1up has confirmed that it's running at 1080p.

At its press event in Tokyo yesterday, Sega revealed, or rather boasted, that Virtua Tennis 3 runs in 1080p on the PS3. Displaying the game on slick HD sets with 1080p placards next to them, it looked absolutely glorious in high-res.

I know that blogger reported it, but I was awaiting something more solid..

1up has confirmed that it's running at 1080p.

It's good to see that while not all some game are taking the extra effort to aim for 1080p. I am wondering if EA sports franchises will eventually also go down that road.

To pick at a sore scab, and is bound to be asked, so why not: What does running mean?

Does running mean rendered.

Does running mean output.

MS hyped 720p, Sony hyped 1080p. While a rare (only?) case, MS considered PGR3 being upscaled from 1024x600 to 720p as sufficient to meet the criteria of "every game supports widescreen and 720p".

While there will be PS3 games that support 1080p, and VT3 runs fine at 13x7 on a 6800GS (RSX being substantially faster in most areas), it would be nice to get a confirmation that:

VT3 is being rendered internally at 1080p.

Due to the immense hype Sony placed behind the PS3 and 1080p and as a bullet point in their HD display efforts I would like to know that if games labelled "1080p" will be restricted to games internally rendered at 1080p internally, or if games rendered at 1080i and scale/stitched together on output will also qualify, as indeed, the signal they send will be for a full progressive scan 1920x1080 resolution image.

Not a big deal outside the marketing angle/fans, but interesting question nonetheless. On another note, hopefully HD images are anti-aliased and then reduced to 480p using a filtering/scaling method that further removes edge aliasing. It is dissappointing that it appears many 360 games are not "supersampling" 720p images.

They didn't say VF5 was running at 1080p, so if it was merely the case that VT3 was being upscaled to 1080p, why wouldn't they say the same of VF5? As tellingly, they've released 1080p shots for the game to coincide with this event.

if a game can support a higher resolution, they probably take that extra step to make it 1080p complaint.
i prefered them using that extra power more on something else in the game.

If we have to choose between 720p at 60fps or 1080i/p at 30fps, I would go with the former. Of course the 360 version is 720p and only 30fps :???:

Besides the point of scaled output, I would ask: We can tell a 1080i screenshot over and against a 1080p by... :?:

We can't, unless you're using one of those weird framerate-locking techniques. You render 1920x1080. If they're doing that, then they're rendering at 1080p really - and PS3 supports 1080p output, so you wouldn't be passing it as 1080i to those nice TVs.

Well after looking at the 1080 screens, I see little reason to doubt this is running 1080.

The texture, model data should easily fit in main memory. There is very little draw distance to worry about................looks to be 20 or so repeating crowd models(500-1000 in the stands).
The main players 50,000 poly's(maybe less), 30 or 40 various models(chairs, cameras, ball boys/girls,ect....)

Don't have to worry about expolsions :) or building pop-in....or loading the next part of a city(FOM, PGR3, ect....).

I actually expect this to run at 60fps.
