Uncharted : Drake's Fortune*

The only problem I have is that the gamma seems to be FUBARed in every video and screenshot, so I can't tell how the lighting works in the game. I'll try to check it out at some friends as soon as I can... but it certainly seems to have a lot of work in it...

Well this is actually the frist game for me that believable made a transition from shadow to light. When you step into an area that is hit by direct sunlight it looks really great (e.g. no sudden oversaturation/bloom like in other HDR implementations, just very realistic lighting).

There is an unlockable effect that adds loads of bloom though :p

Anyone has an idea how they made the smoke effects? Never seen anything like it before. Shoot an explosive barrel and see the smoke. very impressive

The game itself played nicely and I liked it a lot. Hard mode was most fun to play as the bad guys tried more to achieve drake's unfortune. I hope the game has more aggressive AI and difficult mode. Even hard seemed too easy and more like just run through.

edit. What I mean here with just run through is that the bad guys didn't put enough pressure to drake. They have the advantage in numbers so why not change positions more and try to circle drake, get drake into crossfire etc. Now they just stood there and wanted to be shot. Too easy. At some odd occasions they did heroic "I'll get him" and insta death for single bad guy. I would prefer smaller bands of intelligent bad guys and not just simple shoot one billion zillion idiots. But I guess this demo is from early part of game and could be toned down because of that even in hard mode.
Personally I found the AI very pressuring. I died numerous times in both normal and hard.

Also what you are describing in your last paragraph, is exactly what the AI was doing to me. After some time of not being able to shoot me, some started shooting at me continuously to pin me down while others were changing positions from cover to cover until I had no room to hide!

Easy mode seems to be plenty of fun too when trying to take as many enemies down with bare hands as possible. Drake has some unbelievably cool finishing animations. I'm stunned. Can't wait for the final version of the game, a definate must buy.

I love it so far! The demo was really impressive, but too short. I hope it's not a sign of a short game as well.
The shoot out parts are IMO excellent. I think that it's better than GeOW. To this point I prefer using the pistol over the AK. You can kill enemies much easier with one shot with it.
I don't think though that the problem with the AK is hit detection, more of a gameplay decision. It could get very easy if enemies died by taking 3 bullets from it. The grapphics are nice and I never thought that I'd say just nice for this game but the Crysis demo spoilled me...
Animations are great also. What I'd like to see, (and it's just a minor thing) would be the ability to take imidiate cover on the oposite side of the wall you are sticking on, without having to jump over do a few steps forward and then go back...
As for dificulty, I found the hard dificulty great. Not really hard to be honnest, but anjoyable non the less.
It's a day one purchase for me.

Well "crushing" should challenge you then.

Nice demo. I guess I'm the only one saying I wasn't impressed about the in game graphics. Pretty boring and usual "jungle".

There are non-jungle levels too, just not in the demo. As for graphics, I am less into textures and resolutions, but love to see the interactive elements... like the wind and swaying trees + tall grass, the running water, destructible environment (but they are all scripted), and may be the shadow.

Yes, I agree in principle (except the too easy part). In some moments, Uncharted reminds me of a movie where the bad guys and the protagonist tried to outwit each other in a maze. Because there are so many obstacles in the level, sometimes I can't see the pirates too. I hope they play up this element at some point.

As for circling and crossfiring, they already do that now... if you're not careful. Happened to me once (I was out of ammo and cornered).

Agreed. I only wish they were a bit more aggressive at it. I'm really nitpicking here about something that really isn't so big a deal in the end. I believe the final product will be amazing experience. I'm really wishing for nice plot to tie the whole package together.

The demo feels better and better after replaying it few times with different tactics. The ai adapts nicely to how the player plays the game. Superhero style just running and gunning definately doesn't work, but running smartly+cover+shooting+running seems to be fun and gives more feeling of satisfaction after succesfull clearing of area. Taking enemies down with bare hands is something that gives great sense of achievement. Seems to me that easiest way to "win" is to play carefully and try to take out enemies from distance. Also this way it's most boring :)

I wonder what's up with the plot as the bad guys know Drake's name at that point already. But well, I guess it's better to live without spoilers and enjoy the final game without knowing too much beforehand.

I agree that this game is the most fun right now on Hard, and that for the hardcore it's good that there's an unlockable 'Challenge' mode. Hard right now is still definitely doable. It's obviously not the first level in the game (that would I assume be the one on the small boat that we've seen in the video) but how far in it really is I don't know either, probably not too far in. Right now I think I might try the game immediately on Hard, which would be the first time, but that's because I enjoy the fighting mechanics so much and it brings out the depth of the gameplay better. Playing on hard made me 'blind fire' a grenade for instance, which works great when you're being pressurised by larger numbers, and it looks really cool. I've really not delved into CQC yet, I may try what someone else did here and attempt to beat easy using just CQC, to get a hang of it.

I also look forward to the 'medals' in this game. Should definitely add to the fun.

The game is definitely not perfect, on any level, but what game is? The overall package though, is wonderful, and the gameplay is very enjoyable ...

The demo is the fourth chapter of 20.

Here's someone playing a section of the demo with a lot of enemies quite well, using all sorts of strategies fairly well. He says he died on the last enemy because he was rushing it to keep the video short :D:

http://www.dailymotion.com/Me_Marcadet/video/5804958

I did a couple of melee-only runs on hard (besides the first three guys in the demo),

And all of the first three enemies in this video can be killed from behind easily. So the infrastructure for stealth based game is there already. It would be unfortunate if ND didn't include such a level or at least completely melee based one.

BTW, I'm totally sold on the replay value of the combat, but not too keen on solving same puzzles or even platforming again and again. I wish they could be skipable for the multiple runs.
Increased speed mode can help regarding platforming though.

Also I don't understand why games don't provide an unlockable infinite enemy mode where you can simply shoot people like a two stick shoot-em-up, for high scores or whatever.

Something like arcade mode of CoD4 can also be nice.

Anyway at least we'll have "next-gen look" mode. :)

This guy is good. He knows who to avoid or kill from far (The Mossberg pirates), he makes good use of the terrain (There is this row of trees at the far end of the level), he uses the barrels effectively and most importantly he keeps moving. :)

Just wanted to say...that I love that there's no music in that jungle fight. It felt real...you could hear the space and hear that it was a jungle, and it felt like a real gun fight in the middle of nowhere. Great sound choice.

It looks so good on these pictures and videos, but when I go to play the game, it looks horrible. I've been hearing so much about Xbox 360's photomode adding AA into it, and they use touched up screens to present it, but I haven't seen Sony actually doing it. So I'm asking if my PS3 is defective. This is something I notice, and it has bad AA. I played Uncharted and I think it has stepping as bad as halo. I honestly don't know. Warhawk doesn't look that bad. Neither Resistance. This is the first title for the Ps3 that is really bad. And its been hidden and never touched.

You think I'm zooming in, but I see it EVERYWHERE, if I take an offscreen picture and host it on X site it will be compressed and the original 3000x2000 jpeg gets compressed. So I took a pic of it closed up. But you can see that really bothers me when the pictures and video SHOWN HERE are completely jaggie free, infact, I've only seen one or two pictures with stepping. So I start blaming the hardware. So thanks for pointing out that its the software. This kind of stepping does not bother me while in gameplay. But this normally gets accepted and there are normal complaints about stepping on Xbox 360 titles and I haven't seen anyone point it out. I apologize for pointing out the obvious.

Denko,

What resolution do you have your PS3 set to? I've heard of some issues on 1080i only dispalys. Apparently, this is solved in the final game but might not be in the demo. It could be that you're getting a SDTV signal that is upscaled to 1080i instead of the 720p one. It certainly shouldn't be pixellated or to the extend that you are describing...

Is it the whole chapter or part of it? I'm sorry but I'm having some "short game" issues latelly... And the funny thing is that I'm never able to finish long ones...!

Not sure. But every person who's played it has come in at 9-10hours not including cutscenes, or looking for treasures (there's 60 of them). Plus they had already played the first 4 levels previously.

There might be one. In the area where Nathan first met the Mossberg armed pirates, there is one or two flags (papyrus ?) to your right, hidden behind a barrier of trees.
