UBI talks Far Cry 2 engine

No framerate problems?

Pretty much no framerate problems. Too much fire can cause a slight jutter here and there and a bit of tearing, but it was never enough to affect the gameplay. Considering the amount of detail on the screen at any given moment the game moves exceptionally well.
I'm especially impressed with how good the game looks at pretty much any given distance. Oblivion looked great up close, but the lod system (at least on the 360 where I played it) was so damn obnoxious that the game basically looked like ass past a certain point. FC2 does a much, much better job in that regard: grass doesn't magically appear out of nowhere a couple of meters away from the player, it just gets a little more dense the closer you get. It's hardly noticeable unless you really look for it. I never noticed entire buildings popping into view either. You can pretty much pause and take a postcard-worthy snapshot regardless where you stand. This level of polish pretty much carries over any aspect of the graphics: lighting, shadows, textures, geometry, animation, effects - it's all of very high quality and consistently so.
PS3/360 owning graphics whores won't be disappointed, I'm sure of it.

How's AI, by the way? Complaints I'd seen suggested that it was terrible. Did they fix it?

I wouldn't say terrible. It's an open world game so there are bound to be a couple of issues, but in general the guys put up a good and fun fight. They seek cover, they follow the sound of your sniper rifle (so unless you are really, really far away you have to switch positions constantly), they do a good job at flanking the player and generally use the environments rather well. Compared to the idiots in GTAIV they are small geniouses. They have great aim as well so you better approach the situations with a rudimentary battle plan or else you'll get shredded in no time.

Are you using 1:1 pixel mapping mode? If so, can you comment on whether you see a black border around the edges? And if there are, is there any setting in the options to adjust the frame size?

Nice, Sigfried1977. Thank you

I REALLY wish there was a quick save option in the console versions. The threat of having to replay everything I did in the last half hour doesn't exactly encourage a lot of experimentation once I finally get to wherever the hell it is I'm traveling to, especially if I've done some wandering along the way, found some diamonds, etc.
It seems to me that the best part of this game should be concocting fun new ways to approach each situation, and the save system in the console versions really chops a leg off the fun imo.

Well I put a few hrs into the game last night. The good, it looks and runs great (ps3 version). The bad, I have few issues with possibly the biggest being it reminds me why I'm not enamored with the FPS genre. The iron sights are worthless with your target usually completely hidden behind the barrel and the recoil jumping to the point that one shot moves you off a target you can't see to begin with. This forces you into run 'n gun and imo it's not very strong there either. The fire is cool but since you're in run 'n gun mode stealth and strategy is out the window so it's little more than a gimmick at this point for me. All this could change I guess with a different set of weapons but then you run into the issue that Dr Meaty mentions with the quick deaths and then having to start all over again it makes progression where new weapons may be available very slow going. Oh, and the last stand thingy is shit imo. I can stand there and empty a clip into the guys head and he won't die but one wack with the machete kills him? I'd be happy using the machete more but with no reason to go stealthy.............

Anyhow, maybe you FPS pros will have a different take on it but a mediocre player like me is just not having much fun with it. I'm going to give it a few more hrs this morning to see if it changes/I can adjust but as of now I'm glad it was just a rental for me.

I use 1:1 pixel mapping (technically it's not 1:1 pixel mapping as my tv is 1366x768, but I have no overscan. It's called PC mode on my Regza) and there are tiny black borders on both the top and the bottom of the screen. It's like in Ratchet&Clank and it doesn't really bother me. Can't be more than a couple of lines.
You can't adjust the image size in-game.

Give it another chance. I had the same problems for the first hour or so, but I really love the game now. I'm by no means a pro fps player and I usually hate the genre.

Put a good 5 hours into the PS3 version. At first i was frustrated with all the guard checkpoints (aspecially that they get repopulated very fast - shoud be atleast a day of ingame time)

Then i formed a new strategy with the guard posts, upon first visit of one, i kill everybody and "scout" it. After that i just move around them, it usually works out well, and as long as you have one of those jeeps with a machine gun ontop its usually rather straightforward to take out the few guardports you might agro anyway.

I have some gripes about the AI, in daylight the enemies seem to spot you from far far away (no matter if your crouching in bushes or not), and they often shoot at you even when there is plenty of plants and other foilage between me and them.

At first i tried playing the game on infamous but its just to frustrating, 2-3 shots will kill you, and with enemies having good aim through foilage its hard! Add that to all the random encounters and guard posts, and its getting very frustrating. I like a good challenge, makes Hardcore is still challenging enough, while normal is like walking through the park.

At first, i wasn't all that impressed with the graphics, but it really depends on where you are and the lighting (time of day). Sometimes it looks fantastic. Haven't had any framerate problems so far, however the game seems to struggle with sound at times, sometimes sound effects that normally are there are not.

I wish there was more civilians in the game, as so far i have only ran into soldiers, and they all shoot you upon sight. Could have been more wildlife aswell, ive seen a buffalo i think (some big brown animal with horns ) and a herd of something that resembles deer but isn't deer. Other than that, nothing.

Oh, and i absolutely love how the fire spreads with the wind etc, you can ambush convoys in interesting ways etc. I love how random events sometimes happends, i have scared convoy drivers into driving into water and dying etc.

Il post some more impressions as i go along. So far im enjoying it, but its far from perfect.

No offence, but you gotta suck at FPS games, nothing wrong with the ironsights or the recoil, aim at the chest, fire, recoil goes upwards and usually hits the head. (You can also upgrade the recoil, accuracy etc on weapons)

There also is atleast one gun with a Dot-sight scope on it (AR-15) which i found in one of the safehouses, its rusty and old, jams alot but its nice for aiming.

The fire is cool but since you're in run 'n gun mode stealth and strategy is out the window so it's little more than a gimmick at this point for me.

Fire's are awesome, they have a big strategic impact aswell, if your under attack you can easily just ignite half the forest to stop them from flanking you etc, its also a nice way to kill people. Its also nice to see that when you blow stuff up, the fire can spread and sometimes create extra havoc :)

Are we playing differen't games? 1 shot to the head kills people instantly in my game.

The problem with stealth is that its rather hard to sneak up on most people as they usually notice you from long way off unless its night time. And using the machete isn't allways a sure fire way of not alerting the other guards (i unlocked some silenced weapons, and they are nice for stealth thought)

Sorry for triple post, but i gotta add something: the more i play this game the more impressed with the graphics i get, there is dynamic shadows all around, the draw distance is amazing, this game certainly is stunning!

yes I am enjoying the gorgeous atmosphere and graphics and the wide open missions and terrain but the weapons leave a lot to be desired so far. There are a ton of upgraded weapons and attributes that evidently add exponentially to the accuracy and enjoyment of the weapon system so I'm going to keep plugging away to get to that point. there are a LOT of missions and a ton to do. Only wish the day/night cycle would change more quickly (sleeping advances time too) and I have yet to see weather.

i'm pretty early in yet though as Fable 2 is in the rotation :)

Yeah it feels good.

Yeah strange, headshots has been insta kills for me to.

Maybe he closed his eyes when he pulled the trigger as an instinct and thought all bullets went straight for the head? rofl...

Mod : I've moved the warmongery discussion to a separate realism thread, so this thread can focus on the actual game.

I like the health system

If your moderatly hurt (aka 40% or more left) you can heal yourself with syringes that you get from certain houses. If its more than that (criticially wounded) you gotta pull bullets out of your body in order to stop bleeding etc, and if you die your dead.

I also like the buddy rescue thing, where a buddy sometimes rescues you when you die (i think they rescue you like once per day or something?), only gripe is that sometimes the buddy will run into trouble when he is with you and you gotta run around saving him!
