UBI talks Far Cry 2 engine

Well, the entire PC game is about 3.1GB.

How do the PS3 load times fare then? Specially compared to Xbox? I wasn't paying much attention to FC2.

Far Cry 2 on my PC is a smaller install then the first Far Cry
That's simply amazing. The game has the most complex engine nowadays, along with the Cry engine, imho, and Dunia would fit the needs of games like Oblivion, for example, better in every aspect of the engine.

FC2 isn't perfect but you can do a lot of things and it's truly original in some regards. I'm pretty sure it will be an influential game in the future

I just spotted this game for 25,99 euros on play.com ... I think for that price I can afford to try it just to admire the tech. ;)

There's nothing admirable about Far Cry 2. If you want to admire Ubisoft tech, the game would be Prince of Persia, or maybe End War.

Why is Prince of Persia something to admire? It doesn't appeal to me in any way currently. Reviews seem to agree. Far Cry 2 on the other hand does do a lot of interesting things. John talked about it again in 1up and keeps bringing it up. And even if PoP were as interesting as Far Cry 2, the latter game is still less than half the price of the former. ;) I told myself I'd want to see Dunia in action and let it show me Africa (I've some relatives who've been there regularly), but I'm not the biggest FPS fan and I promised myself to wait until budget prices ... I didn't expect them so soon!

It'll also be interesting to see where the Far Cry 2 devs will take Home integration, now that they've got the first bunch of home spaces in there.

I couldn't get into this game at all. This is probably the only game I've bought where I quit after a few hours and didn't finish. It has a sandbox feel to it, so if thats your thing, then you will probably enjoy it.

The first few hours are the worst though, aren't they in this game? I've heard everyone complain about the first few hours, and everyone say that it got better afterwards - the guns are bad in the beginning, the malaria is annoying, etc.

Ive only played up until Act 1 so far, and the most annoying things are design flaws imo.

Guard posts and instant shoot on sight guards is annoying, aswell as the fact that the guardposts seem to respawn very fast, and there is a million of these guardposts. I fixed that problem thought, by traveling mostly of the road.

I didn't say it was something to admire, although I think it's still a much better game than FC2.
The think to admire in PoP is the tech. It has awesome streaming, checkpointing, save anywhere. Even loading for fast travel is much quicker than any other next gen game. Graphically it's as good as best of AC and better looking than FC2. Of course it doesn't have much vegetation.
Most importantly, PoP is the ultimate nonlinear QTE game, even if the button to be pressed isn't displayed always. You press the buttons, and the game fills in the rest, the platforming, animation, camera, coop AI, pretty much everything. Of course the platforming is not on arbitrary complex geometry, but geometry is still varied enough to make the thing impressive.

Just ignore him.

The only thing that gets better after some time in FC2 is the guns.
Gameplay related everything else stays the same.
You do the exact same missions over and over again with a couple of unique act transitions missions. To be fair, I find the ending interesting far as other games go. There are a few of other things the game does quite good, but overall I wouldn't recommend to anyone unless they're OK with repeating a half an hour game 20 times.

As the story progresses it takes you into bigger battles in more interesting locations too. I was very dissapointed by how small and simplistic everything I saw in first few hours of the game was, but enoyed it as the game opened up from there.

It's possible that they spend a lot of time getting their tools working right, it might pay off more next time around :)

Finally got around to playing this.

And I have to say, this is a very good game. The game is not perfect. But the sheer number of new and innovative things this game attempts and the ideas it plays with is fantastic. Anyone who is a fan of FPS games needs to play this.

Basically if you are tired of stock FPS shooters were very little has changed from doom->quake->halo->COD etc and want to see some actual innovation, you should play this game.

Agreed. I've been playing a lot lately and it's a truly remarkable experience. I'm continually impressed by the environments, the changing weather and the seemless manner in which you travel from place to place. I'm not even very far into the game. Lately I've just been unlocking guns and hunting for diamonds.

This is the kind of innovation that really deserves to be rewarded.

This was the same initial feeling i had from far cry 2. The environments are very nicely done and at times it can be very special.

Then that grew old and i started noticed the many game design flaws.

The respawning guardposts are annoying, the traveling gets boring once the first impression wears down, and ai is bad, the fact that ai sees through foilage makes the game ridiculous, and the action in this game is short, and usually not particularly good, most time is spend traveling in a beatuiful but boring and annoying africa.

I admit that the AI is poor, but I've yet to see anything to back the claim that they see though foliage. Best I can tell they simply see when you duck into foliage, and hence continue to fire in that general direction, just as anyone who isn't a complete moron would.

Something I have noticed while playing while wearing the camo suit is that when you fire from position A, quickly relocate (throwing a grenade for distraction helps) and just watch the enemy is that they will shoot/attack position A and not position B (while crouching in grass/hiding behind a tree).

So it is not just 'they see through everything', that they see much better than in the average shooter is another thing but I see that as a pro not a con.

But, I agree the AI could be better, especially the stupid 'lets drive with my car into his, no need to park on the side and fire at him in the car' is one of the low points.

What I do not understand is that after so many years, some new games seem to have a badder AI than Operation Flashpoint, why this is so is beyond me...

Cheers...
