Trident XP4 Preview Benchmarks

OpenGL guy, I visited pricewatch and the Radeon 9000 series has a very competitive price :) I thought it was more expensive.

WOW really competitive :

Radeon 9000 : ~ $71
Radeon 9000Pro : ~ $86

That's really low. The Cards are only available since 1-3weeks(?) but we
see already such low prices. So when the XP4-cards ship the price will be
even lower.
And the above prices are with S&H. Go DX8 Go :)

Hehe, if you can actually hear that wimpy fan, you must not have much cooling going on in your case. ;)

It ain't over here. Change the $ to £. Still about 60% the price of a Ti4200 which is it's only major competitor so far, though.

Is "Atlantis" an OEM or a code name for the 9000? I keep seeing it appended to the ATi 9000 name on the $85 9000 Pro's on Pricewatch.

The huge price difference between the 64 and 128MB 9000 Pro variants is surprising--$85 vs. $170. I suppose we'll have to wait for more Powered By cards to drive that upper price down.

Actually in some of our PC's the video fan is the loudest, because they tend to be very small crappy fans and the bearings go in no time. On one GF2Ti, the fan has actually seized altogether, although since it doesn't hang at all that's actually a plus point.

The single most annoying PC fan I've heard was on the northbridge of an AMD760, I think. That PC mooed like a cow.

Actually, I spend an upsetting amount of money to get the noise level of my Athlon XP 1800+ down to a bearable level. I hate noise.

I've got a Silverado CPU cooler (two encapsulated fans), a modified PSU with two Papst Fans running at ~1500 rpm, another 80mm Papst @ 1500 rmp and a 92mm @ 1800 IIRC for case cooling, HD enclosures etc.

The only thing I cannot find a low-noise substitute for is that fucking video card cooler of my Ti4200. Those fans aren't "wimpy", man. They run at 7000-9000 rpm! You can't hear them when you've got a noisy computer but once you bring down the noise level like I did, the noise from the video card fan really sticks out. Sounds like a goddamn mosquito. It's horrible!

So if the Tident thingy at 350 Mhz achieves at least somewhat comparable performance to my Ti4200 and comes with passive cooling, I will be more than glad to swap the Ti for the Trident board. And guess what: I will consider it a killer upgrade.

Actually that's not the case if you really look around. I found a Radeon 9000 64mb for only £66 inc VAT! Obviously that is still more expensive then the U.S on pricewatch, as £66 is equivalent to $100, but its still very cheap for quite a fast DX8 card.

Hmm, is this a particularly silent HSF then? Because I've been looking for a HSF that cools well and is quiet for a while now, because the HSF on my Athlon right now is by far the loudest thing in my case and I'd like to get rid of the sound.

Yup, it's particularly silent. Frigging expensive too because those nutters bolted 50g of silver to the heat sink. There are actually newer heat sinks now which are at least as silent and much cheaper, plus, the Silverado got a really crappy retention latch. But a year ago when I bought it it there were no alternatives.

The stuff from Blacknoise.de is supposed to be pretty good. They are currently setting up distribution in the UK but it's not there yet.

http://www.pcsilent.de/en/index.asp has some decent cooling solutions and they ship to the UK for €10. Just stay the hell away from the Zalman Flower-Heatsink.

Low-Noise cooling is expensive. You could just swap the fan on your heat sink for a low-rpm Papst or even better, a Verax Radial fan. It will probably raise your CPU temperature quite a bit but as long as it doesn't run too hot it's a trade-off I'd be willing to make.

My current heatink is a Taisol CGK760172. Here's the relivant fan specs:

Fan Size 60x60x10mm, 2-Ball
Speed 4800 RPM
Max. Air Flow 21.19 CFM (Min. 19.07)
Fan Life 70,000 Hours
Noise Level 36dB

So if I could find a 60mm fan with around 21 CFM (I don't mind if its say only 20 CFM) and less then 36db (say 30db or maybe even less) then that would be great. I looked at a overclocking store but I couldn't find many 60mm fans and the ones I did fine weren't much better then the one I have. The best one I could find was the same sound level as my current fan but with more air flow (36db and 26CFM) but I'm more interested in something quieter at around the same air flow then something with the same sound and better air flow. Anyone know of any 60mm fans available in the U.K that could fit what I need?

EDIT: I just found a PAPST 612NGM 60mm 20.6CFM fan and its 28db. Would 28db be quite a bit quieter then my current 36db heatsink fan? Its quite expensive for just a fan, £14 inc VAT and delivery. But I'm just getting so annoyed at the sound coming from my current fan, I mean this fan can just about be heard in the next room at night!.. that's just too loud, that I'd buy this fan if it helped significantly. Just to test if the HSF was causing all the noise in my system I physically stopped the fan from turning for a few seconds and the PC was practically silent, then when I let it run again all the noise returns.

Very much so. 28db is approx. the noise level of whisper, 36 db is (quiet) street noise. A 28db fan should be considerably quieter than a 36db one.

There is also the Y.S.Tech FD1260255B-2A, 3200 rpm. According to the specs it's 28db and 34 m^3/h - that's roughly 20 CFM if I am not mistaken. It should be quite a bit cheaper than the Papst one (it's <€10 here in Germany, VAT included)... if you can find it.

Oh, there are 60mm - > 80mm adapters, too, but I have no clue how and if they affect airflow.

I used a 60mm to 80mm converter on my Fop32/Athlon1600XP and a quiet 80mm fan, and my cooling was just as good as before, but quieter.

Hmm, I'm interested in one of those adapters. I can't find them anywhere though so if anyone knows where I can get one in the U.K then post the info here please.

I just found another 60mm fan lying around, so I took off the one I had on my HSF and put this one on and it is quieter, but a little less effective at cooling from what I'm seeing from my CPU temp now.. nothing too bad though. Still though I would like it too be a little more quiet and I do have some 80mm fans that are practically silent (20db) and do put out a decent amount of air (27 CFM) so if I could use one of those with an adapter that would be great.

Never mind I just found one of those adapters.

I believe al three of these guys carry 60mm to 80mm adapters.. they are not exactly cheap though... about £14 inc VAT and delivery which is the same as the Pabst fan you mentioned.

If you want a good cooling solution may I recommend the Thermalright AX7 and a low powered, low noise 80mm fan?

And by the way, where can I pick up a Radeon 9000 for £60 in the UK from? I would be very interested :)

I just saw that there is a Radeon 9000 64mb for ~€100 with passive cooling! YAY! Clocked at 250 core / 200 ram. Not that great but at least it's silent.

Teasy, Google is our friend.

LOL, yeah I used google but didn't find that, I think I put in converter instead of adapter though. But I actually already found one anyway (I mentioned it in my edited post above) but thanks for looking anyway. Its aluminium too which I think is better then the plastic version, right?

I'll check out that heatsink you mentioned.

I doubt there's much of a difference. That thing is just directing the airflow. If the price is the same, go for the aluminium one just for the sake of L33tness. That's always important.
