Trailer from Naughty Dog

DeepFreeZtm:oops:
i had a search for the term couldnt find anything about, i suspect the 'secret feature' was just an excuse on sonys part so they didnt have to say 'its not ready'

How would you rate this higher than Crysis? Not that I disagree, I'm just curious as to what your reasoning is. Personally I think the animation potential in this game is amazing. If they can pull off realtime similar to the vid I'll be amazed. Preferably it's physics based. Aside from this though I'd have to say Crysis has the edge technically unless there is an even newer vid of this game I haven't seen?

where to begin ( NOTE im taking the developers at their word that what has been shown is actual ingame stuff, perhaps they are doing a killzone2 )
- fully unified lighting, looks like no lightmaps, (ild love to know what sm technique they use),
- very high polygon count
- amazing attention to detail
- (related to the above) the world looks solid, ie it looks like a place that can exist, contrast this with the vast majority of games spartan look
- amazing animation + physics
- people talk about the amazing jungle in crysis but this is a step above, each plant looks to be modelled, crysis is still alphablended billboarded stuff for leaves etc

about the vegetation
--- crysis ---

it does look amazingly great, but if u look closer, u see a lot of the leaves etc are just flat polygons with leaf textures stuck on, this is what the vast majority of games have done until now (this is the ultimate example yet made though)

contrast this with
--- drakes fortune ---

now here it looks like everything (even the blades of grass) are polygon models, these are getting close to the cgi used in bugs life, antz etc

whilst the billboards look pretty good in a screenshot, in actual gameplay they look terrible

actually looking at drakes fortune again it might be quite fun for ppl that like single player games, sortta indiana jones like feel

edit. can someone show me how to resize the pic .. thanks.
In your local picture program, irfanview, photoshop, or I think the windows photo viewer. Or you can resize it automatically with some image uploading sites, imageshack.us does it IIRC.

no, i meant doing it in the reply window, is there anyway i can do it? i thought there are code that you can adjust the image in the reply window.

Yes, but you fail to consider a couple of things. Crysis has a HUGE draw distance when in Uncharted you can only see a few meters away. Also, the environment in Crysis is actually (for what's been shown so far) not only a step, but a leap over Uncharted's. It's completely interactive, you pass trough leaves and they move accordingly or you can break any trees you find. In Uncharted, they seemed mostly static. With regards to the animation, we don't know if the trailer was a cinematic (just mo-cap) or was actual game footage so we should leave that category out of the equation for now.

In conclusion, while Uncharted looks good, it's not in the same league as Crysis ;)

Whoa, big drop in the quality of the environment in that screen.

From Game Informer:

This screenshot, while still very early in development, will give you an introduction to the main character, Nathan Drake, and show some of the dynamic lighting techniques that will be used in this upcoming PlayStation 3 title. Did we mention the game will have pirates? We know how you love pirates!

The scenery isn't anything wow in this. The main character's lighting and self-shadowing looks great to me. Looks to have soft-shadowing via dither. Gives a very solid feel.

Why does this game get a free pass? Nobody cares about such facts for other games!

There are things that are so-so in the 3d screenshot, and things that look very good. I kind of expect that love to.... slowly crawl into the rest of the game, much like I expect from other really great teams which present similar mixes of "alright" and "very nice" stuff. With that, I'm out. I don't want to see the standard internet stupidity, or worse, hypocrisy, regarding early shots (afraid I might be drawn into that ****). Lat3rz and all.

Who's being hypocritical about early builds of a game?

It's obvious that the E3 screens look ALOT better then this. So does that mean that the E3 trailer was a target render or (wich I doubt very much) that the 3D screen is from an older build than the E3 ones (wich seems illogical for them to do)?

The E3 trailer use in engine asset. Last December, the game framerate was 30 img/s(no 60 fps for this game) and the visual quality was a bit under the trailer. The shot is probably early.

patetic frame by frame from only one 3d screen with lots of artifacts and compressions problems...let's see the video and will see :D

I've accused noone thus far. It would be naive to believe it won't happen, though.

Ah ok, just wondering.

Anyways, I think it looks great to be an older build of the game (i do wonder how old though)...

As Shifty Geezer said, the self shadowing really makes it stand out imo.
Looking forward to seeing more in next months EGM (or was it EDGE?).

Nice to see the guy has some real emotion on his face when firing that gun.

Can't say I like the main characters name though. Nathan Drake. :/

My expectations for this game just dropped back to the level it was when it was shown. I think its obvious that this is newer than the one from before simply because the main character looks a lot manlier, most likely due to feed back from people.

The water looks fake, the vegetation is sparse, and the grass looks one dimensional.

Skin shader looks far too plastic as well, it's like there's no specular map applied, nor any high-requency details in the textures. And the lighting... I know he's firing an AK, but why show this overbright, burnt out image??

Definitely not on par with the original trailer, and I thought that was realtime... seems like we've been fooled back then, one more time.

...and I thought that was realtime...

Did you really? It was from E3 '06 wasn't it? I never thought a game would look like that circa 6 months before the launch of the console itself.

I remember there was some discussion of clipping in the original clip. Was it widely assumed to be real-time? Or was it just taken at face value cos it's ND after all...
