Thought you guys might be interested in this. Its an interactive slider which will show you to scale the size of some key things in the universe from quantum foam right up to the size of the entire universe itself. I think its fricken brilliant. Transistor gates are in there somewhere if you can find them....

There's also xkcd's take on the subject:

Well, I guess this one's about distance rather than size. But still, fun comic! Also, that was a great flash animation...seen it before, but still awesome :)

Digital Universe.

The UI is very rudimentary but click around, it's worth it. Like Celestia, it has stars, but it really starts to shine in galaxies and superclusters. Nice to check out the Great Attractor and the Shapley wall, where our galaxy is headed.

Ow yeah and.. the Origin of Man [NSFW]

Hmm come to think of it maybe this one is a better fit for the Misandry Bubble topic

Who would have thought a thread about the "Scale of the Universe" would up being NSFW. :)

Maybe put that in as a spoiler with a NSFW warning? :)

Been playing for a few hours with the $10 Universe Sandbox which appeared on Steam today.

You can play with all sorts of what-if scenarios like give the moon a moon or drop another jupiter in the solar system etc. Quite fascinating if you're into this sort of thing. The interface is very intuitive too, recommended.

this one is NFSA (not safe for anything), from the glorious and defunct encyclopedia dramatica :). my lawyer suggests that if you're offended then don't look at it.

NOTE: This is what scientists look at all day.

New version of The Scale of the Universe*. Flash app, apparantly, so you'll need that hellish piece of software installed for it to work. In any case, it's absolutely fascinating - and I find the included music eerie and very mentally envigorating. It totally fits both the sub-atomic and intergalactic scale, which is quite an accomplishment IMO.

Since everything is clickable to make speech bubbles with a brief description appear it's also educational as well, especially for kids since they're written in a style aimed for younger people, although some of the texts are rather whimsical and/or silly. Still, it's a jolly good read, checking everything out and zooming around.

Highly recommended!

* = read about it on Phil Plait's excellent "Bad Astronomy" blog!
