It is obivous in statics but depends on track. Some are flat and others are billboard crosses or even with a bit more. They make them dark though to hide it and it works well. Same in many other racing games though most not as much as in GT series AFAIK. If well done yo uwont really see the texture 'seams' or flatness and at speed it gets hard to notice. Optimal to set best trees near slow speed areas and simple trees at high speed areas.

I'd have thought driving a best-case example of 3D's worth, as grey walls contrasting with grey tarmac can make for hard to see corners, whcih depth would solve. though regards the dimmness and difficulty, I was like that with Avatar, and I think I'll prefer the 2D version on a bright TV.

I wonder what head tracking would add to the experience. One of the articles mentioned they are trying to fudge with the focus area to give a more convincing experience.

For complains about 2D trees, I think the answer is easily addressed by considering what will be in the total package.

That was some crappy videos, but there may be some 2D trees in the forest section, I hardly can tell from that video.

But hey, they are virtually rendering the game at 120 fps for the 3D setup and they will have night driving, weather effects and 16 cars races, if you think they spent their resources right or not depends all on where your priorites lies with regard to racing games.

JP release is delayed , it is not March anymore. Hopefully it is not gonna affect WW release.

Just saw this as Kotaku,

;)

Anyway, hopefully it won't affect the tentative "Summer" release for NA and EU and the JD delay may mean a simultaneous worldwide release. Considering that the game was already "complete" in June of last year, I suspect that the JP delay could be to tie in with the release of the 3d firmware that Sony are promising for this year. A huge title like GT5 would be the perfect poster-child to launch Sony's foray into 3D.

What about rest of the world ?

Outside of Japan, there has never been a specific release date, so it's difficult to know if there will be a delay or not. The Summer period lasts from June to October, and I would be surprised for it to not launch during that timescale.

Is that face showing in the rear mirror a representation of the player?
If head tracking is indeed in GT5, can you look at your avatar in the mirror! A pointless feature, but fun :)

Regarding the 2d trees posts from earlier. Take a look halfway down the thread...........Stunning....Tremendous image quality on that Sony tv aswell!

Isn't it obvious they are 2D trees? You can even see where the billboard parts cut each other to form simple cross or such "volume" and that they are photomapped flat surfaces. Present in lots or racing games. Often it is convincing at optimal viewing angle but illusion breaks down quite brutal in non optimal viewing angle unless they rotate which would not be good either. Usually cross shaped or Y shaped.

That was kind of the point of posting Neb...............For me they look great............And as i said before, let PD how their resources are spread out...........Who knows, this extra month delay might be because they want to remove the "2d" trees and replace with 3d goodness ;)

They are 3D trees, just very poor looking ones (if you pause the game and inspect them every few seconds)

As can be seen by the videos it's hard to tell when in motion even when you are looking for it, while playing no one at all will be paying them more than a passing glance.

I'm sure for everyone (apart from the bullet pointers checking against "other" games) spending time making the cars look the absolute best is much preferable than lesser quality (and possibly fewer) cars and better trees.

3D trees suggests a degree of modelling and structure beyond a few billboards or textured planes. If the trunks are made of photos rather than polygonal 'cylinders', I wouldn't want to call them '3D', any more than those large cardboard promotions you get in cinemas.

For me trees in Academy demo looks like this:
