The Framerate Analysis Thread part 2

Just because the crowd is missing doesn't mean it's the only reason it's now running 33% faster in worst cases..

It could be all kinds of things. Though, since ALL people are missing (at least that's how the screenshots look at PS360s blog), it has to mean that they were a bigger reason, as the game sure does look quite a bit more ... lifeless without the crowds.

Of course, but it's the only visual thing we can see here. There may be a lot of reasons in the implementation related to cell usage and syncing with vertex shading/processing on RSX. There are a lot more ways to skin a cat (or crowd in this um... geometry... instance).

I can't view that in the US apparently. But I'm pretty sure I have a bunch of photo mode pix showing the spectators in different levels as flat & 2 dimensional.

I'm at work and unfortunately cannot check.

Polyphony really was working hard on GT 5 post launch, just look what a boost fps got after all those patches

Ps. I've noticed how many people they've cut out or maybe its just different event.

looks to me like there arent any crowd people and maybe tweaked the car ai so that they spread out more.

ARMORED CORE V has such a strange look in this video, doesnt the mech look like a pre-rendered sprite?

What is strange that crowd tech shouldnt be that expensive in GT 5, because they already had nice crowds in GT 4
GT4 trick was remarkably cheap on PS2 - I've used something similar and crowd cost was like 1ms at worst, with more details upclose (actually we used the same approach for 3d grass too).
Not sure if GT5 LODs as agressively, but I'd still find it mind boggling if it was costing several ms to render, the crowd wasn't that great upclose either.

I never played the game, but was it really worth it to sacrifice all the eye candy for a stable 60 fps? I mean it's not like the framerate was bad before. 53-54 fps is hardly a low framerate.

It's just the crowd and not "all the eye candy". :) Out of curiosity, does Forza 4 have crowds along the sides of the road?

Yeah, it does look like the crowd rendering is the main culprit... it is rather curious that they effectively save 6ms at worst (45fps shooting up to 60 now) just by skipping the rather sparse crowds. Wonder how they implemented that.

The waving flags are another thing completely absent.

ppl are saying Binary domain runs alot better on 360, which is surprising for me, consider this game come from a ps3 exclusive developer and probably use PS3 as the lead platform for this game. I have only played the PS3 demo, someone said its the same demo from last tgs back in sept. And some report also say the 360 version looks sub HD. The PS3 demo looks quite sharp to me, especially compare to the Yakuza games, but Im using a different screen now. Hopefully someone here will confirm before the game comes out.

I don't know how old are these builds but having played both demos the 360 demo runs much better, especially in the second stage the PS3 version runs like crap - looks like it's running at 20-25fps almost all the time...which as you said is quite surprising considering this game is Yakuza's team first work on the 360.

Also for what it's worth the game looks like it's sub-HD with some sort of AA in both systems.

ya man, quite sad, because I normally go for the PS3 version because of free online play and better audio. Since the JP version comes out first, if the final build is much closer between the 2, I will still stick to the 2.

resolution wise it looks fairly good possibly not being scaled tho there are borders which make it 1216x684
