The E3 Thread! Who will come out on top?

Press Conferences are actually hard to compare

Microsoft's press conference was the only one that aired on TV and they showed the gamers and the general public watching that they'll have a plethora of hot titles within THIS year. They came out and said, "if in 2007 you want to play the biggest titles, you'll need a 360." It's hard to argue with that and I certainly understand why they didn't talk much about 2008 and beyond.

Sony's 3 biggest guns: MGS, LBP and KZ2 aren't out till 2008 so Sony did what they needed to. Try to convince people to hold off on getting a 360 and save up for a PS3 so they can play those 3 and other such games.

As an owner of both, each month going forward, I have 1-2 games that are must buy's for me for the 360 and the only PS3 gaming in 2007 that looks remains a must buy is Uncharted and Heavenly Sword.

I didn't watch the Nintendo one but I can tell you one thing. Hearing about Super Mario and Mario Kart subconciously has me wanting a Wii. I swear, mind bending witches and wizards work at Nintendo to have such an effect!

The percetion of the hardcore gaming crowd and that of the general consumer varies greatly. All 3 played to a difference audience with different short term goals in mind. E3 will be quickly forgotten as we get into the marketing onslaught of the Holiday season.

So what do you think the biggest titles are going to be then in 2007? Because a great deal of the stuff that was showed was multi-platform, wasn't it? Unless I missed something CoD4 is coming to PS3, Madden will be on PS3, Rockband will be on PS3 (as will Guitar Hero 3). So which games make the distinction for you, then?

Now if you were to say that games like Bioshock, Mass Effect and Halo 3 make the distinction for you, then I'll give you credit for that. But looking over the range of game types, I find the message much less convincing and the difference isn't all that big. Both platforms have a few weaknesses, but both have pretty strong line-ups.

Sure they are big guns, but they aren't necessarily the biggest guns for everyone. What they are, however, is three games that a lot of people were clamoring to see, and have been waiting and looking forward to. MGS trailers have long been a classic E3 tradition, and I sometimes feel that even when the series has ended after MGS4, there should be an obligatory funny/awesome MGS4 trailer just to keep the tradition going (that is, if E3 is to survive after this year)

As an owner of both, each month going forward, I have 1-2 games that are must buy's for me for the 360 and the only PS3 gaming in 2007 that looks remains a must buy is Uncharted and Heavenly Sword.

Just tell me what they are then. For my part, I've got a pretty impressive list of want-to-haves on PS3. And definitely, Home is going to have an impact, because it's coming along very, very well, and you know what? It's free.

The percetion of the hardcore gaming crowd and that of the general consumer varies greatly. All 3 played to a difference audience with different short term goals in mind. E3 will be quickly forgotten as we get into the marketing onslaught of the Holiday season.

Sure, but first there will be Leipzig and TGS, and the way things work these days, they will probably be great events.

Now to be sure, don't think for a moment that I don't value what Microsoft is doing with the 360. They're doing well, and right now are getting some big titles, and doing some good things online. But to me, they're not showing leadership. In fact, they are showing even less leadership than with the original Xbox or when the 360 was launched, when they brought the whole online/live thing to consoles. What did we get this time ... a buzz-rip off? No words could frame my feeling better than what Peter Moore said to Kotaku this week when asked about how Peter Moore felt about PSN, just after boasting that he'd known about the price-drop for weeks because of his ace team of industry watchers and analysts. He said something like "I'm not sure where they're trying to take this [PSN]. When it becomes clear to us, we'll respond if necessary." Those words probably weren't his exact words, but they are either a blatent lie, or very stupid. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and call it a lie, for now.

Above all though it's important to remember that both parties haven't shown their full hand yet. I'm sure that behind the scenes tonnes of stuff is still going on, and either TGS or Leipzig, or even X07, is going to bring some surprises for the PS3 and 360 at the very least.

But who came up on top during this E3, to me is very clear. Things could change - for instance if Sony can't get EA to get their games up to 60fps on the PS3 before Christmas, that could hurt them. Microsoft could come with a great new controller. They could announce at Leipzig that from that point on, Live would be free. They could come with amazing new games. Halo 3's replay feature could become the best thing fps games have ever known. They could come up with the new Mario, or they could come with Vision support that works even better than the wii-mote and turn out to be way ahead of Sony in this area. They could come with a price cut that makes the console flie off the shelves like no tomorrow. There's a great deal of things that could happen.

Bottom line though, is that Sony had the best E3 conference. We'll see who has the best Christmas showing in about 6 months.

For NA, unless the developers screw up badly, top 3 will easily be Halo3, GTA4 and Madden. As for multiplatform, I have no desire to buy a multiplatform game on the PS3 unless it's a significant upgrade over the 360. Why? Two factors:
1. Controller. The 360 controller, for me, have much better ergonomics, doesn't lose sync and has rumble.
2. Friends. Most of my friends have or are soon to be transitioned to the 360 from their PS2's. They have no interest in the PS3. I much rather play online with friends than strangers, goes without saying.

Bioshock, Mass Effect, Halo 3, PGR4, COD4 and GTA4 are on my must have list for now. Would love to pick up Uncharted and Heavenly Sword but will wait for reviews first.

What leaves the show as most desired is what the people are looking forward to. The rest falls under the "also present" category. For Sony, what came out on top for Sony out of E3 were MGS4, KZ2 and LBP. This is debatable ofcourse but I'm just going by the buzz on the net. Tradition or not, if the MGS4 trailer looked weak, it wouldn't be a good thing. However, I want the game even more now!

Just tell me what they are then. For my part, I've got a pretty impressive list of want-to-haves on PS3. And definitely, Home is going to have an impact, because it's coming along very, very well, and you know what? It's free.

My must haves as I said above: Bioshock, PGR4, Halo3, COD4, GTA4 and Mass Effect. Will wait to see reviews on: Uncharted, HS and Assassin's creed. I have 0 and I repeat 0 interest in Home and that is something we have discussed before. Seeing that I don't even have a myspace account, never blogged anything or even touched a Sims style game, I could care less about Home. I'm just hoping that I'm not forced to go through to manage friends lists, send game invites, etc... For those who are into the afroementioned social activities, I hope Home is all it's cracked upto be and you guys are happy with it! Just because something doesn't appeal to me doesn't mean I think it sucks all around. Just not my cup of tea.

Sony is certainly on the right path and it's about time. By this time next year, I certainly will have a good list of Sony exclusives in my gaming history but I'm not a big fan of "wait!" Arwin, I've been waiting since November of 2006. This holiday season most of my money will be spent on the 360 (unless the games I mention turn out to be terrible!). The PS3 is a great piece of hardware. It's not like I paid $700+ to have a console sit around do nothing. In time, I do believe that they'll do well but they're certainly taking their sweet time.

Your perspetive from not owning a 360 will be quite different from mine. If I didn't have a 360 and my only exposure to this gen was the PS3 I'd certainly have a level of enthusiasm much closer to yours.

Fair enough. I haven't lost sync ever though. Might have been an issue with the first batch of US units?

2. Friends. Most of my friends have or are soon to be transitioned to the 360 from their PS2's. They have no interest in the PS3. I much rather play online with friends than strangers, goes without saying.

That one is hard to argue with.

Fair enough. Of those games, I only like PGR, but my non-sim tastes are probably going to be satisfied by Burnout Paradise this year. COD4 appeals to me a little bit also, but I'm not too big on fps games. GTA is a great game, but for some reason it can't hold my attention. I'm hoping that one day we'll get a version with a better (suited to my taste anyway) backstory and such. The Russian guy appeals to me even less.

Anyway, with those tastes, it looks like the 360 is indeed the best platform for you this year.

What leaves the show as most desired is what the people are looking forward to. The rest falls under the "also present" category. I think that's fair. LBP made a big impact for sure, especially in the press.

I could care less about Home.

No problem with that. I just think it'll make for a great unified lobby, achievements system, chat interface and so on, and it will be a piece of software that appeals to a large number of people.

However, I think Phil said that most of the relevant functionality would also appear in the XMB, so I think you'll be fine.

Arwin, I've been waiting since November of 2006.

Fair enough. I guess that if I had gotten my PS3 5 months earlier I would probably have complained harder about new games as well (though then again I would probably have been playing the backlog of PS2 games I still have, still have to finish either God of Wars, Metal Gear Solid 3, Final Fantasy XII, and so on). Recently though, the stuff on PSN is tiding me over very well. I just barely got round to finishing Resistance (first fps since ages, and first on console I finished) and I haven't even started on multiplayer, and haven't played a lot of Motorstorm yet either.

I think it will be over come August 14th starting with Lair. From that month onwards also I expect we'll see a much bigger selection of playable demos coming online, as I've seen a lot of stuff announced in that respect.

Your perspetive from not owning a 360 will be quite different from mine. If I didn't have a 360 and my only exposure to this gen was the PS3 I'd certainly have a level of enthusiasm much closer to yours.

I owned several systems last gen and I still have my Xbox Live account active, although I haven't done anything with it for several years so I'm basically throwing away money. I'm following the 360 closely and keep looking at demopods to test stuff out on it. So far though, it hasn't come through for me yet. That's just the way it is, but a lot of it is down to taste. The only game I've been interested in so far and probably would have bought if I had a 360 already is Forza 2. But the fact that this is still the only game I'm interested in, that I'd have to buy another, not nearly as good wheel as the one(s!) I already have, and have to add the price of the 360 on top of that plus live, (though I'm still paying that, but I'm counting it anyway), plus a wireless adapter (to my surprise I'm running all my stuff on PS3 wirelessly so far without any complaints), well let's just say I'm not convinced the game is worth that. ;)

Of course I can definitely see how some people would feel the same about the PS3. It will definitely need more than 1 game you really want to play before you're going to buy it (unless you also want a BluRay player of course).

Anyway, we're getting off topic and I think in the end we really agree about the E3 results anyway.

In retrospect i think MS E3 wasn't so bad as i originially thought it to be:

No, there were not any big suprises. No huge amazing exclusive in development. No MGS4 360 annoucement. They did have one thing tho, (i haven't seen nintendo's so don't flame me if they did the same thing), they were showing off games that are pretty much all coming this winter.

Aside from some propaganda from Moore & Co, it was an 90 minute commercial, showing off games coming this winter. AND they aired it on national television in the states.

I think its smart, it sucks for us "hardcore" gamers, that want to be blown away by amazing new software we haven't heard of (well, we all got blown away by the CoD4 demo), or new exclusives. But for the more casual minded guy that is considering buying a console, and happends to read something about E3 on the web or sees the show, i think it was quite good. It shows a lot of interesting titles, coming out this fall and winter. It tells you, the only place you can play the 3 biggest games this fall in the states (swap Madden with Fifa in europe) is on the X360.

Weras with Sony you had a much more interesting show for us hardcore gamers. We got to see killzone, along with a lot of brilliant looking projects that are coming to the PS3. They aren't however coming out now.

Which is a big problem with the PS3. It seems like the story of the PS3 is basically "Wait". The few people that are praising it to the moons are all saying "wait" until all the good stuff comes out. Whenever there is critisicsm of the PS3, either in game library or graphics the answer is also "wait". How long should this argument be valid? Granted its a powerful piece of equipment, but the devkits have been out for 3 years now, first party devs have had 3 YEARS with the Cell to make stuff. How much longer does this brilliant piece of hardware need until it will achieve something unique that justifies its price and this long waiting time?

I don't want to wait, neither does any casual. They don't want to pay for potential, they want to pay for real things. Microsofts E3 showing showed just that, real games, coming out within months. Whatever comes out next holiday can be shown at E3 2008 and whatever gameshow they wish.

That sounds like FUD, they showed 2008 games yes but unless you only want MGS4 or KZ2 there are good games for 2007 such as Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, Lair, GTA4, COD4, Assassin's Creed, Devil May Cry 4, Hot Shot Golf 5, GT5 Prologue, Warhawk, Haze, UT3, Rock Band, Guitar Hero 3, Madden 2008, and the non-game entertainment called Home. What are not available in 2007 that count are only Halo 3, Mass Effect and Splinter Cell 4.

I am in the camp the 360 while a poor show in general had the best E3 because of the fall line up. Sony has some nice stuff coming this fall but the 360 has a much better line up for me. Mass effect, blue dragon, LO, eternal sonata and halo 3 are what I am itching to play that does not include the MP games like CoD4, Rock Band and the new sports games. This is might be the first year I can not afford all that I want. The 360 fall line up is just insane. I am sure if there is an E3 next year Sony will have what I will want to play with lots of RPGs like FF13 and big budget games like KZ2.

Rock Band seems like its going to be very niche. If im not mistaken i believe i heard one of the devs say they were projecting the price of the whole set (drum/mic/guitar x2 + software) to be $7-800 which is hilariously expensive for plastic props made in china by the lowest bidder and i hope he just had no idea what he was talking about since thats the publishers territory.

It is 199 for a guitar drums mic and software not 700-800 dollars. If what they say is true about full albums for DLC including a shit load of metallica I might end up spending a few hundred more on that. I can also re use my guitar hero guitar to save some cash.

Project Gotham Racing 4

Viva Pinata: Party Animals

Plus 20 or so Live Arcade games announced.

Yeah, but Sony showed a great deal of games that are also coming out this year. That's my problem with this whole 2007 thing. There's a nice pile of games that I want that are coming to the PS3 this year, starting with Lair in less than a month, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank, Unreal Tournament, Warhawk, Wipeout HD, Socom, Haze, SingStar, Eye of Judgment, NBA 08, GT5 Prologue, Home as just some of the exclusives (I really love what they do with the PSN). Add to that all the multi-platform stuff that is coming this year in a much larger quantity and more mature shape, with Burnout 5, CoD4, Rockband & Guitar Hero III, Project Evo Soccer, Fifa/Madden, GTA4, and so on as pretty heavy hitters, and some titles catching up and looking to be in very good shape (like Dirt coming late August/early September).

But anyway, if enough people keep repeating the basic Microsoft E3 message, then you are right and Microsoft may have done a better job than we thought.

Then let's add AC6 and PGR4. BioShock is on PC too, and these Japanese RPGs are niche titles in the US. The others are the type of games PS2 can offer right now.

Overall I liked this E3 specially on the 360/PS3 side because I think that they showed what mean to be a next gen game with games that evolved in every way (both tech and gameplay) and presenting a few new gameplay tricks. Too bad there is to many sequels (or espiritual sequels, or games that are just too close to others), I would like to see much more variety and originality.

On the Nintendo side I also liked but almost only because of the very high qualitity games presented, but (besides WiiFit, that it does not seems so interesting) but i really lacked in their original premise of original games.

So I liked but I think it missed too much to be a good E3.

List Wars!

I do not think anyone can be convinced that one platform is superior to another or that it has a better lineup of games by posting list after list of games. In the end, the games that interest the consumer most are going to decided which platform they purchase.

With regards to the debate over the Playstation's holiday lineup, I think price is going to be the determining factor between the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, not the lack of first and third party exclusives.

There's plenty of new IP.

In fact, it seems Sony is bringing out a lot of new, first-party, IP. Besides the games we've known about for a year, they have even more new IP like Folklore and Pain and some others I'm not even recalling.

Seems kind of risky.

Games like HS, Lair and Uncharted may be quality games but they don't have the built-in hype of the established franchises.

No matter how much sales these new games may merit, Sony will have an uphill battle trying to get the mass market to look at these new games.

Things would be a lot easier if the FF, MGS and GT games were out this year but they won't be.

On the other hand, maybe a good time to try to establish a lot of these new titles. They're not going to outsell Halo3 or GTA4 with these new IP but maybe they'd get more attention than they otherwise would be if FF, MGS or GT were being released this fall.

What are not available in 2007 that count are only Halo 3, Mass Effect and Splinter Cell 5.

Not quite.

- Blue Dragon
- Lost Odyssey
- Bioshock
- PGR4

And when you consider both Mass Effect and Bioshock are both early contenders for GOTY, it's a super solid lineup of exclusives.

Blue Dragon has already recieved great reviews, and everything we're seeing of Lost Odyssey looks awesome.

Splinter Cell 5 is another game that looks amazing, is the true follow up to Chaos Theory which averaged a 94% review score.

Strong year in almost every genre, only platformerers and adventure games are missing.

Then let's add AC6 and PGR4. BioShock is on PC too, and these Japanese RPGs are niche titles in the US. The others are the type of games PS2 can offer right now.

What's the rules to making a list  , you say bioshock doesn't count because it's on PC but half of the games on the list you made are multi-platform

maybe I'm missing something.

I think all three were pretty lame, compared to past E3s, maybe E for all will be more exciting
