The Big Forza 2 Thread *

We all know the game has been delayed till the end of may, so does that give them 2(?) weeks of extra production time before it gets sent for certification/packaging/etc?

How did they get the clouds to look so realistic??? Watch the 720P video from 1:10 to about 1:30 to get an idea of what I mean.

Seriously, if you're not impressed with that video, not sure what sort of expectations you have!

I was thinking about their atmospheric... <insert technobabble> tech that they were talking about a LONG time ago. It looks very good.

There were some parts of the video that looked kinda hyper-glossy, but there were lots of times when it looked pretty darn realistic. I think I just have the expectation that the chassis not be so shiny that it looks like...plastic? It's all in the lighting, as I said, some parts looked darn convincing - when we get that pseudo close-up of the yellow car for instance (1:36-1:37 exactly).

I couldn't help but notice a lot of aliasing on the cars though... shader aliasing? It was usually when there were bright reflections (HDR precision?). Personally, I probably won't notice too much when I play the game as I'm focused on other things, but I'm just curious as to what it is.

In the other vid that shows the camera mode, it seems the camera enhances the lighting conditions a fair amount...

At the same time, yeah, it has all these physics calcs going on (the heating of the brakes is very nice touch graphically) 60fps + 4xAA, but I think more importantly is that it's their FIRST showing on new hardware. That's quite an achievement in my books, and I hope they'll be able to produce FM3 within this generation.

One thing that really caught my eye was the self shadowing of the cars as they turned corners - it was soft and pretty subtle.

I said WOW at that video... especially impressive when you remember the incredible amount of AI and driving-physics calculations being done with all of those vehicles as well.

That's a beautiful video, the backgrounds and scenery are just gorgeous, this is what next gen gaming is all about right there, 5 weeks seems so long

Good point sir, good point!

Edit: streaming version here: http://www.gametrailers.com/umwatcher.php?id=59022

OK, I'm assuming the streaming verison has higher compression so I can't tell much about AA/AF (and at work for some reason I can't get to the other versions), but... environments (and especially sky!) look great, I'm very impressed with the lighting model in general now, graphical touches like break glow are nice, sounds are nice, shaders on the cars don't seem overly distracting now, and in general this game looks like it is going to rock! Can't wait.

Impressive. Draw distance in outstanding. Looking back across the entire track from either end is clear and accurate. Didn't notice any LOD pop on the cars or environment. The trees are particularly nice. They have good volume to them and you can make out the individual leaves up close. Also have to comment that the car audio is spot on. Too many race games sport wimpy engine sounds. The AI looks amazing. When the vette gets a little loose you can see the cars behind start to panic and swerve. The one thing I always loved about Forza was the control. While PGR often feels so loose and random, Forza is tight and accurate. Livery, Car Upgrades and Tuning, DLC, Auction House, Online, Damage, FF Wheel, 60 fps, etc. I'm sold.

Forza, even the original, was never about graphics. I'm not sure anyone can match what PD does in that regard. To me the GT series has always felt a bit slow and because of the way contact was handled, the driving experience a bit boring. It's almost more of a car showcase, with incredible graphics and insane number of cars to collect. That's not to say that will continue and is only my opinion. Forza's on track experience was fast, exciting, and tense. Based on what I have seen, F2 looks to continue that.

So far, visually Forza 2 look way too "fake" and plastic like, not very realistic at all IMHO. We'll see how the final version turn out.

Some caps, the sky combined with the amazing looking mountains and trees make for some breathtaking scenery:

Shure looks good, the circuit detail, shadows, lightning and more. I like that the tire rubber burn marks are visible on the track even when driving several laps around the same circuit. I missed this in GT:HD which didn't have tire rubber burn marks on the ground, not even when drifting. :???:

Not only visible during the race, but during the entire duration you play the game.

When you first race a track in Forza it will be clean as a whistle, the more times you race it, the more marks it builds up, until eventually all the best racing lines and break points are fairly easy to see due to all the built up skidmarks.

Very cool feature.

doesn't quite look 60fps

I have seen a few different videos on the "Battle on Mugello Circuit" and the framerate looks below 60fps. Seems like the increase in detail since the last bunch of pics/vids has come at a cost. Looks on par with PGR3 at mo.

That's the kind of stuff that separates a sim from an arcade+ racer IMO. It isn't there for the benefit of looking pretty, but because it is there in real life and serves a real purpose. Same as damage... if I see a damaged car in online play I'm not going to think "ooh, pretty" but rather "oh, this guy might be a loose cannon!"

I just watched the latest trailer at gametrailers. Is it me or is the car physics slightly lacking in that replay?

There are moments that the car's motion doesnt seem as realistic (refering to things such as weight). Or perhaps is it the camera's fault?

I'm very tempted to make a comparison here that mods don't generally like.

Che Chou, community manager at Turn 10, requested that the video be done at 29fps. Hence the reason the frame rate of the video is such. The game is 60fps locked.

when was the last time you downloaded a video from the net and it was running at 60fps?
