The Big Forza 2 Thread *

New screens, I love em:

Edit - According to Che via GAF, these are not photomode, they are just the game paused with free camera on. Don't know if I buy that...

Although still not realistic, I suppose now that that is actually what they're aiming for instead of going head-to-head with Polyphony's style.

The first picture looks quite realistic actually as a smaller picture, but when you enlarge it, it just lacks the realism of GTHD.

That said, the visual style does grow on you and when you consider the 60fps and 4xAA its not a bad way to go at all. The lighting and reflections, while rather cartoony still definitely looks good in the sense that it is something fresh. I started out a skeptic, but I'm liking how its turning out.

Also when you consider full damage modelling, and the awesome new options they've added to the modifcation system:
  • We’ve also added several new upgrade types, especially in the engine area. For example, we’ve split out engine block upgrades and top half upgrades. Engine block upgrades increase the engine durability, decrease its inertia and provide mild power increases, while cam and valve upgrades raise the redline, radically change the audio and skew the engine curve toward high RPM horsepower.
    ---
  • we’ve added roughly 100 more engine swaps for even more cars. That’s cool, but by far the coolest new upgrade is the powertrain swap. Yup, that’s right. Now, you can not only swap out the powerplant, you can even put in a new drivetrain. For example, ever want to put an AWD Lancer EVO drivetrain into a FWD Eclipse? Now you can – only in Forza Motorsport 2 of course!
Full Cam and Block upgrades/tuning, 100 new engine swaps, Powertrain transplants??? So sweet.

This game is a car modder's wet dream....

I demand to be back on your ignore list :devilish:

But yes, as a (amateur) racing enthusiast (bought PS2 purely for Initial D, Battlegears, Shutokubattle and GranTurismo), this is very very interesting.

The damage modeling though, is something that I personally do not care too much about but do recognize that if done right, is a technical feat. I hope it doesn't impact too much on the car selection however (speaking of which I have no idea how many cars are in this game).

Lighting was greatly improved! though aliasing is simply absent from this shots..photomode ftw :)

Trust me, you don't know how much fun and excitement damage modelling adds to the race until your balls deep on your last lap, with a screwed up car, battling every inch of the way to the finish line and some guy right on your tail, it's very very fun.

Over 300 cars btw, basically everything you could want, from your daily drivers, civic's, neon's etc, to evo's, ferrari, lambo's, beamers and porches, it essentially has em all.

Btw guys - Forza Motorsport TV series begins tonight on SPEED at 11 Eastern.

From what I understand, it's like a real life Forza game. 6 fdrivers, start out in crappy cars, and win points which they can use to upgrade their cars. Every week they race with their newly modified cars...something like that, sounds cool.

Should be some ingame footage too

I don't see a problem with his explanation. The only thing that might be up in the air is whether it was from a replay engine or gameplay engine. IIRC Che implied that more post processing effects are used during replays. Other than that I think they look great, though I ultimately will reserve judgement [as always] until we see native framebuffer shots.

The lack of aliasing comes from...

For those wondering about FSAA, I received these shots as 2960x1440, so there is no point in arguing about what type of AA this game uses using these images.
We have an in-game utility to pump out screens from the buffer at hi-res. Doesn't make 'em bullshots though, since it is literally - pause game - take picture - dev kit takes 10 seconds - screenshots in your folder.

Forza 2 will still support 4xFSAA in-game at 60fps.
Just your common or garden devshot.

300 cars doesn't sound too bad at all. I was wondering about the Ferrari's though because I thought they were being licensed by Polyphony for GTHD and therefore would not appear elsewhere (I think this was the case before). Whatever the case though, I personally am not a fan of Ferrari's so it hardly matters that much. I prefer the homegrown cars

Hey thx for the link MMkay, I hadn't read the specific comments, a little more from Che:

Well, our photomode shots are basically in-game shots -- same models, textures, cubemaps, etc. The game literally just pauses, allowing you to move the camera around. But yeah, technically, it's not what you see in-game due to custom camera placement, lack of HUD (although there is an option to turn off all HUD when you play), etc.

Awesome news.

Oh my, powertrain swaps too!? Freakin awesome; as an avvid car nut, that is like a sound of a lumpy cammed smallblock or external wastegated turbo to my ears:D

Definitely cannot wait!

Lol...now maybe I'll be able to handle that 900hp CRX with stage 3 weight reduction!! Jesus that baby was touchy.. Still won a buttload of races with it though :p

RICER ALERT!!! j/p ;)

900hp CRX would still run maybe 10s because I don't think you can buy slicks in the game!

330-350ish cars, with everything from Ferrari and Lamburghini to your Skylines and Mercs.

I hope they have downloadable cars like the new 2009 Skyline GT-R if not in the final release.

That's pretty cool. I'm gonna ask a friend to record it on DVD-R.

If you look back, First party xbox racing games pretty much all featured ferrari cars.

I'm guessing here, that the licence to use Ferrari cars in games is very expensive (should be, Ferrari was the 3rd strongest brand back in 2005 - doubt there has been much change), and that pretty much only microsoft was willing to pay for it.

Either that, or microsoft until recently owned the Ferrari license, and it has now swapped hands with somebody who is willing to earn money on selling the license to others.

Because from a business stand point, i do not believe that a dev studio like Polyphony digital, with the amount of sales they have, wouldn't afford to license ferrari's. (Maybe they thought the $$ spend on the license wouldnt pay off in terms of extra sales?)

This is all speculation by me ofcourse, but i think its safe to say that either the Ferrari license was VERY expensive until recently, or Microsoft "owned" it for a while.

An interesting thing about Porsches thought, is that the licence to use Porsche cars in games has been owned by EA games ever since they made NFS:porsche (which by far was the best NFS game, IMO) Anyways, MGS (Microsoft Gaming Studios) seems to be the only one willing to pay out EA to get sub-licensing, and they are only doing it for Forza (PGR, another racing game thats backed by MGS, does not feature Porsche, but RUFs). I think Microsoft saw how much GT sold, and figured they need to make something that can compete.

There are, however, problems with having Ferrari's in the game. They are extremely strict as to what can happend with the cars (in NFS4 and all titles until recently, Ferrari and Mercedes didnt allow to have their cars being used in police pursuits.) They know allow it, however, they do not like seeing their cars get damaged. Its because of the Ferrari's that the damage models arent as "damaging" as they could be.

Oh and if you like "homegrown" cars (if that means like cars you build yourself), you would love Forza, the customation is beyond anything else.

Lol, it's an H22 prelude swap in a 1600lb CRX...ya traction is an 'issue', it works ok as long as you never ever ever give it full throttle!

The only problem is, with all the slippage and redlining, the engine is usually toast by the 3rd lap. It will be sweet if they allow you to get stronger rods, forged pistons, and sleeve your bottom end for endurance.
