Stadia, Google Game Streaming platform [2019-2021]

They could have just made an app and had a subscription.

Why wouldn't they at least change their business model?
I'm sure with GamePass and xCloud they saw the writing on the wall where there was no hope of recovery from a failed service that had no chance against competition.

Next, Amazon Luna?

That explains why it wasn't in that logitec streaming handheld.

What a half hearted effort.
Guess wasn't worth the upfront short to middle term investment and work for them.

I think cloud gaming is just a waiting game, and Google gave up early, though I am glad to see them go. They had considerably less skin in the game, so to speak, than any console manufacturer. Those cloud instances could be used for something else when they are not used for gaming. I believe current contracts would get in the way of a purely subscription-based model based on their existing content. However, the sooner they switched over, the sooner they could have turned things around. Amazon is a pure subscription model, so I think it will stick around for a long time.

They kind of set the expectation with developers/publishers to basically double dip off both the service and the users.

Their entire hardware/platform model would also still be an ongoing issue in terms of costs.

I have heard from some sources that while stadia is dead the project itself isn't dead. They are going to try and have it fully integrated with youtube. If the integration works as they want to expect a relaunch later in the first half of this decade with updated hardware

Wasn't that part of the original promise of Stadia.

I wonder how Google's relationship with publishers and developers after this announcement is. Fifa 23 was supposed to release tomorrow for Stadia.

I doubt it really matters as i am sure the majority of content is just pc ports locked down. I am also sure that google paid enough to make it worth their while

This si crazy. Google can afford to refund all HW and all SW they sold? I guess the publishers keep their cut, so Stadia was a 100% loss for Google? :O

Better they do that and make it far less likely that they end up with a class action lawsuit on their hands. Not to mention all of the bad press. This might seem bad but not refunding people...

I am surprised it lasted this long, even after they changed the business model last year. This is like that death scene in Buffy the Vampire Slayer that keeps on going, except extended even more.

The hardware is just a chrome cast and bluetooth controller. No one will get refunds.

Crazy? Google makes tens of billions of dollars of profit per year. I don't think stadia was that populair (otherwise they wouldn't have killed it) so I doubt the refunds will be much more than a blip on the balance sheets. Doubt anyone is losing sleep over it at Google.

There are tweets from devs who had no idea and who haven't been paid for now dead projects. Unless Google offer to pay them anyway, I'd say it has soured relations. Google have an established track record of ditching their projects. Might be worth investing in in the early days if the money is good, but then get out before Google inevitably drop said project and everyone invested in it.

I am sure they have contracts and google will have to pay out those contracts. Depending on the contract the devs could actually make out better in the end. Just take the money google owes them and the semi completed project and go off and release it on other platforms.

I don't disagree with you that google ditches their projects really quickly. Any company that signs contracts for them should make sure to have fall back plans. have it written into the contract

I hope for the devs that tnat none of the contracts were focused around more favorable sales splits, since there won't be any sales. The store is completely shutdown.

Depends on the contract. If the contract was for a delivered (IE - finished) project by the developer then Google doesn't technically owe them anything. If it's based on percentage of generated revenue or profits, again, Google may not owe them anything.

Hell, if the contract was paid at certain development milestones, it's quite possible that a developer will have received little to no money depending on where in development their project was. For example, leaving alpha or beta or reaching a playable state (placeholder assets are fine) could be trigger milestones for payment and reaching those milestones can be expensive (time, effort and money).

Regards,
SB
