Very nice job on the smooth transition from fast travel selection on the map to gameplay!
The game looks great, and there's some clear improvements in areas, but I'll be honest.. it's not the jump I was expecting for this particular game. Even the set pieces, while cool from a conceptual standpoint, don't seem as detailed and bombastic as I was expecting for next gen Spider-Man. For example, when Lizard is climbing up the skyscraper with an armored truck dangling from him. The vehicle is bashing all over the place and twirling around hitting the building as Spider-man is dodging falling pieces.. but there's no damage happening to the building... windows aren't breaking.. and honestly.. the scene isn't nearly as impactful as it should be because there's also nothing happening in the sky above either.. This looks like anything else that would have been done last generation.
Now.. am I being fair? Probably not. This is assuredly a difficult enough thing on its own.. but I can't help but feel that if Naughty Dog made this set piece.. windows would be shattering as the vehicle hits them and you'd be able to see inside of the windows that smash out as you maneuver around them to keep pulling Lizard back. Spidey would at some point be climbing directly on the vehicle as it's spinning around, Lizard would probably smash through the windows, go inside the building, and drag the vehicle and Spidey through an office floor with people scattering out of the way, with papers and computers flying and falling off desks, lights breaking.. as he reaches the other side and starts to climb up again..
That's more of what I was expecting from this game. And to be honest... it's even more "Spidey dragging from behind something while trying to catch up or slow down a big hulking enemy"... Like in the initial gameplay reveal.. Miles is being pulled along dodging from side to side, while Lizard is jumping around running from him...
Is that all that the cool set pieces are going to be?
I realize I'm being hard on the game.. but these guys have given me reason to expect more from them. Maybe there's plenty of other crazy things in this new game.. but so far from what I've seen, is that it looks like a refined Spider-Man PS4 and not Spider-Man 2 PS5.
