Sound systems for the new consoles

Okay guys we've talked about hd tv sets and the impact on the new consoles but how about sound ?

My sound system is sorely lacking and I'm going to update it for the next wave of consoles . What is a good midrange system that costs around 300$ ish ? Whats a good system that costs 800$ ?

What should we be looking for in these systems ?

Bigger the tweeter, the better ;)
High Signal to Noise Ratio
High RMS Wattage
Large frequency response (10Hz to 25kHz, not sure if that's common or not, just an approximation).

Keep your options open with more speakers, I guess. Noone's even announced specific speaker support for next gen consoles yet. *shrug* Personally, I think it's a bit premature to choose that feature until the developers say something..

receivers... enough wattage per channel for those speakers you're getting, lots of optical inputs for all those consoles.

Nice thing about this unit is the bigger two front speakers.

For $800 you should buy separates.

Get a THX Ultra2 receiver. Many flagship models support up to 9.1-10.2 and have special gaming DSP modes. My receiver is an RX-Z9 and I'm running it with 7.1 setup. Invest in a good subwoofer. :)

I don't think he has that kind of money, at least not for just a receiver and no speakers.

No point to go beyond 7.1 for next generation...If money is no object though, if u can afford 9.1 surround receiver such as Denon flagship receiver, more power to u...but I am happy with my 7.1 surround setup.

hehe I have the money but rather get a condo hehe . I'm looking at something 300-800 at the max . I'm going to be getting my own place after the holidays and most likely going to get a new tv and sound system for the living room area

You won't find a better set of speakers for the money than the Fluance SX-HTB. As for a receiver, Pioneer has been implementing some of the tech from their Elite line into the mid-range stuff, check out this thread at AVS.

Make sure that the receiver has pre out on all channels. Might want to get a separate amplifier for regular music. Because most receivers (even rather expensive ones) suck rather bad when playing music. I've listened to my Receiver (Marantz 7.1 7*100 W) with a used Linn 2*50 W that i could buy for around 300$ and it blew away the Marantz completely. I'm talking no comparision here.

Those speakers are not DVD-A/SACD ready. The Pioneer 1015TX is a really good deal though at only $375.

how about jbls ? I'm told those are good

JBLs are not that great for the price/performance.

Go with the Yamaha's I posted they're very good and they're DVD-A/SACD ready. They use the same drivers as the highend models. The reason why it's so cheap is because they're bookshelf speakers, but they can handle a good amount of power. You will need to get stands for them though.

hmm okay . I'm not really a sound guy . Just wnat something good that wont cost an arm and a leg

Then Denon is the brand for you jvd. It will only cost you an arm, you will be able to spare your leg.

In all seriousness. You have a price range of $300 or $800. Why not hit the ball park middle and make it $500 - $600.

And not to hijack the thread. But what is a decent sound setup for $3,000?

that set pc-engine put together looks nice . Mabye i will go with that . Not going to buy till late summer so mabye it will drop in price :)

anyway by all means sonic hijack away . It was meant for everyone since there was no discusion on sound
