SONY's 1st party games as good as Nintendo's!

The funny thing is the majority of people who say this havent even played Nintendo's games.
Metroid is the only next-gen game thats significantly raises the bar, period. I quite enjoyed Timesplitters 2 prior to playing Metroid but afterwards I had to immediately trade Timesplitters 2 as it seemed crude and infantile compared to Metroid. The last game that did this that springs to mind is Half-Life.
Its a shame more people dont actually play Nintendo's games before becoming self-professed experts on how they've 'fallen behind'.

You forgot War of the Monsters!! What is it with this game and people over-looking it? It's the most fun I've had with a video game in years - damn good, makes Goldeneye multiplayer look blah.. and thats hard to do.

Oh and take The Getaway and DC off that list, they're complete rubbish!

What is it with the Getaway? It's perceptions and reviews are so polarized. As far as I'm concerned, if they got rid of his nasty ass stair-climbing animations and made the R-Analog = camera, the game would be damn near amazing.

PS. Ohh, yeah - Johnny, thanks for injecting Microsoft into a conversation about Nintendo and Sony.. wouldn't be a conversation without them

Agree with marc e archie and you may want to add Sky Gunner to that list.
IMO the best and most innovative free roaming shooter this generation (until ZOE2 comes out of course ;)). I wish Sony develops a sequel with a better 3D engine.

EDIT: oh and what the hell happened to Mojib Ribbon?!?!

Since I own both ps2 and GC, I do not feel biaised towards any one of them. Many of my ps2 games are either Konami or Sony, it does not change the fact that they are below Nintendo overall.l

Sony have improved greatly lately but they have still to make progress.

Can anyone post Nintendo's 1st party list?

Luigi's Mansion
WaveRace
Pikmin
SuperSmashBrosMelee
EternalDarkness(not entirely sure on 1/2nd party status though Dennis has stated they will only be making games for Nintendo, he won't say exactly what the agreement is).
SuperMarioSunshine
AnimalCrossing
MarioParty4
Cubivore
Metroid Prime

For those that are out now in the US. Is this a troll thread, or are people honestly under the impression that there is a first party that is close to Nintendo's caliber? Anyone want to state how many consoles Sony's first party could move without any third party support(or MS's for that matter?) For Nin the answer is 30Million, we've already seen that. Also comparing the lists Sony has another year on the market, within that timeframe Nintendo will have Celda, Pikmin2, 1080 2, MarioGolf, Pokemon and MarioKart(likely several more that have yet to be announced).

Say we ignore critical acclaim completely and simply look to actual gamers to see their perspective. The most recent full breakdown I have seen is the '02 Japanese charts where SCE managed to move 2.03Million units while Nintendo moved 5.97Million. Of the top ten selling PS2 games Sony first party acconted for a staggering zero while Nintendo had nine out of ten of the best selling GC/GBA games. Use a critical basis and Nintendo again wins hands down. No matter how you look at it outside of your personal preference, Nintendo's first party is far beyond the other two. Market power, sales, recognition, critical acclaim. You can honestly say that you happen to enjoy another comapnies first party titles better then Nintendo's, but that is really the only valid discussion you can have here. If not for Nintendo first party the company would have been dead five years ago, instead they raked in a few more billion in profits. Noone can come close to making the same assertion about any other first party company, now or ever before.

That's just their GCN titles, of course. Nintendo's been pumping out brilliant GBA games over the past 2 years as well..

Anyways, I think Sony is doing great now quality-wise. Not Nintendo great, but they're a threat to the Big N in the future.

Fact is Sony designers are younger. They still have to learn.

Wazoo: Exactly my point.

IMO, Sony can't match Nintendo overall until they've been around for another decade or so. Right now they're making strides, but stuff like The Getaway shows that they still don't know gameplay like the Big N does. ICO does show progress, though.

First damned game I'd buy if I had a PS2. :)

The reason why they are selling so many 1st party titles is becse there is hardly any quality 3rd party games on GC as compared to PS2 so GC owners dont have any other choice but to buy Nintendo's 1st party titles..there is virtually no competition, whereas on PS2..SONY's 1st party titles have to compete against stalwarts like Capcom/Square/Konami/Namco/Rockstar and others and I am sure if GC had the same amount of 3rd party support they wont sell so many 1st party games.....counter this point if you can...

Am I the only one not really that impressed with Nintendo's first-party Gamecube stuff?

Luigi's Mansion- defines "mediocre"
WaveRace- decent rehash, not really my kind of game
Pikmin- pretty good, fairly original
SuperSmashBrosMelee- again, pretty good
EternalDarkness- great game
SuperMarioSunshine- I'm keeping my opinion to myself on this one :p
AnimalCrossing- wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole
MarioParty4- It's Mario Party
Cubivore- I've heard some pretty bad things about this one
Metroid Prime- great game

I'd definitely take Sony's Ps2 lineup over those. Or Sega's DC or even post-DC offering, for that matter :D

BenSkywalker:

Nintendo games sell well on Nintendo's own platforms?!?

One of the reasons Nintendo has problems with third party developers is because of the strength of there own games. Its hard for a third party to live up the what Nintendo create themselves.

As for Sony now being a better game developer/publisher then Nintendo:

Games developed/publish by Sony since PS2's release (using GameRankings average review scores):

Gran Turismo 3 = 94%
ICO = 91%
Twisted Metal Black = 90.4%
Jak & Daxter = 89%
Ratchet and Clank = 89%
Sly Cooper And The Thievius Raccoonus = 87%
Hot Shots Golf 3 = 87%
SOCOM - US Navy Seals = 86%
Frequency = 84.5%
War of the Monsters = 83%
The Mark of Kri = 82%
Dark Cloud = 77.8%
Kinetica = 77%
The Getaway = 76%
PaRappa the Rapper 2 = 68%

15 games with an average score of 84.1%

If I missed any then just tell me as I've only used the games mentioned in this thread for Sony, because I don't know any better :)

Some (ones I can remember) of the games developed/published by Nintendo in the same time period (using GameRankings average review scores):

Metroid Prime = 96.7%
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past = 96.1%
Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker = 95.8%
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask = 93.4%
Metroid Fusion = 93.2%
Advance Wars = 92.9%
Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages = 92%
Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons = 92%
Pokemon Gold = 92%
Pokemon Silver = 92%
Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 = 92%
Super Mario Sunshine = 91.7%
Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 = 91.5%
Mario Kart Super Circuit = 91.4%
Conker's Bad Fur Day = 90.8%
Golden Sun = 90.6%
Golden Sun 2 = 90%
Eternal Darkness = 89.5%
Banjo-Tooie = 89.5%
Animal Crossing = 89.3%
Pikmin = 86.7%
F-Zero: Maximum Velocity = 85.1%
Wario Land 4 = 84%
Pokemon Puzzle League = 83%
Wave Race: Blue Storm = 81.6%
Star Fox Adventures = 80.3%
Luigi's Mansion = 80.1%

27 games with an average score of 89.7%

Again tell me if I missed any (I know I deffinately missed some).

Sony are doing quite well here, but they're not at Nintendo's level in this area, nobody is.

War of the Monsters is just a clone of Godzilla for GC, its been Said Godzilla is the better game, and even it is mediocre, its fun, for about an hour, then the whole thing just gets old.

as for the getaway, I think its a good game, but its just something so overdone, with GTA3/GTAVC/Mafia/DTR/Max Payne, I think this sorta thing only gos so far before one has had enough of it, its time for something new.

War of Monsters is better than godzilla by far.

Geteway is bad, really bad.

You are not the only one. Of all those games, only Metroid Prime and upcoming Celda really spark my interest.

No.

its been Said Godzilla is the better game
Said by who? I've played both - and HELL NO. WoM is much better made and MUCH more fun. Godzilla is below average IMO.

Besides, I can't seem to find a single reviewer who liked Godzilla more.

Who cares about such poll :)

nobody claims that everybody has to like Nintendo games. I can find you many SH2/GT3/ICO haters, it does not change that those games are among the highest rated of ps2 games.

So finding that 3 people here do not like Nintendo games does not change the fact that those games are highly rated.

Hey, on this board, you could even find a Blinx lover.
