Sony VR Headset/Project Morpheus/PlayStation VR

To upgrade both it would cost more than PS4. By the time the VR headsets launch I guess the price could be similar but only if you don't need corresponding motherboard and memory upgrades. Of course when Zen arrives (3-6 months after PSVR) PC CPU prices in that performance bracket will hopefully fall dramatically.

We can hope, I upgrade with older tech - I am currently running an i5 2500k purchased at £80 and GTX 660ti purchased at £75 both around 1 year ago, I find this offers the best 'bang for buck' - problem is we've (I say we've because my son has a half-decent PC too) been waiting for GTX 970s to drop to sub £100 for some time but it just doesn't seem to be happening (been hovering around £200 for over a year now)...certainly not as quick as previous h/w, I wonder if it's because PC gaming is more popular these days or the GTX 970 is such a good card (and now confirmed good enough for VR) or a bit of both.

Its more complex than the DK2 and that sold for $350 . I know Sony is going to mass produce these but I would doubt they can hit under $300 with all the extras.

I really doubt anyone expects $300 with all the trimmings, vanilla is a push TBH.

There's still a tiny possibility of a revision to the Move controller.

God I hope not, that would seem like a stealth way of Sony making more cash but (IMHO) Sony are generally quite good at trying to make accessories reusable on later generations.

If it happens, it'll be because Move 1 is ideal for VR. As we said back in the day, it'd be much more useful with thumbsticks/nubs in it. Maybe a Vita thumbstick in a depression, so the whole thing can be gripped like a handle or the thumb can control a directional input. Sadly an improvement like that would need to be targeted and being likely a small install base, would probably only be tacked on to games, instead focussing on standard Move input.

I think it's just stayed at that price range because nothing better has been released yet in that performance category. Or at least nothing better from Nvidia who can afford a price premium. It might be possible to argue that the 390 is better, at least in value for money terms.

That will certainly all change once the 16nm GPU's launch though. 970 level performance will fall to at least current 960 level prices. 950 level seems overly optimistic but not impossible.

For the record I have a (stock) 2500K too and I'm expecting it to be serviceable for a good VR experience alongside a decent GPU (which I'll have to upgrade). The only difference between it and the recommended Oculus CPU is the Sandybridge -> Haswell IPC improvements which I can't see having a game changing impact.

They will capture the attention of the public best if they release camera-less SKU [and DS4 is a primary VR controler for PSVR].

I think they will do a bundle withour the camera. I bought a European launch bundle with 2 controllers, KZ SF and the camera.
Same here. I am hoping for a cheap headset-only SKU.

I would think the 3 major players have long term plans. Launch high when production is limited and then year after year reduce the cost of the headset.

Pretty much. I mean, some people already own the camera but i bet is pretty small segment of clients.

I did write to them and tell them, for that $500 million you could stick in a GPU twice as fast and get every game playing at 1080p at better framerates but they said to me, very rudely I might add, bugger off the whole world wamts american football, and plus all the topdogs at MS will get a free seasons pass thrown in. Trust us we know our customers best, and they tell us they want gridiron and kinect.

As of middle of 2014, around 1 million of PS4 owners purchased the camera. Sony talked that they are sorry about cameras being sold out in some US retailers.

That's actually pretty high given that by that time the PS4 had been in stores for less than a year. I do recall some Sony execs saying they were pretty surprised with how well the camera sold but i didn't expect the number to be that high. I would really want to know the actual attach rate.

Imagine all the complaints when someone takes it home and finds out they need to buy another pricy accessory

Like a higher powered graphics card? Oh wait....

pc gamers know they need a new video card. Having worked retail selling consoles I can tell you that many people will buy it and not know they need a camera. During the ps2 era some many people would say they didn't need a memory card and then come back before closing needing to buy one to save their progress.

PC gamers are trained through years of the minimum / recommended specs on the back of the box. The last time a console user had to worry about needing a part might have been the n64 4 meg expansion cart. I worked during that too , that was a nightmare esp since we never had enough to meet demand.

This is in part why peripherals typical sell like crap on consoles.

They can have two bundle one with camera one without. They aren't stupid...

they can , however I suspect they will still have people buying the cheaper bundle.

They also now have to supply enough of both sku or people will end up stuck with the one they might not need.

For example if they sell out of the camera bundle a person may buy the one without. But they will have a bad experience if A) they don't realise you need the camera and B) they are unable to find cameras . Both of those together will upset a lot.

We will have to see what happens . I think sony may just put out one sku and figure those who are willing to buy it with few games at the start will eat the extra money. Just like those who bought ps4 at lunch were willing to deal with few if any high quality games.

The PS camera has pretty good sales. They won't let people buy two times camera. It is just a stupid idea. They can write on the bundle box mandatory camera.

If they do one sku the best is to sell only the PSVR and breakout box and do a discount for people buying camera and PSVR... After it is to salesman to do their job correctly...

And the people buying the PSVR will be early adopter knowing what they buy...

If I end up doing the dedicated room thing I'll probably lay a rug or a section of carpet out to denote the walkable area, that's a pretty subtle and simple way of letting you know where you are. At least a few of the Vive devs have found it to work well and is what Oculus used in the early crescent bay standing demos.

Pretty sure you'll be better off with padded walls :')

Just imagine some heavy action scene or running for your life in a RE like game. Unless you are tip toeing by the time you realize you are off the rug (if your brain even registrates that much if you are really focused on the game) you'll be slamming into a wall face first before you have a chance to stop moving.

So what? People have been happy buying games needing peripherals on consoles, from Eye Toy to Kinect to Rock Band to Wii Wobble Board to N64 expansions to Amiga RAM expansion to Move. Some consumers might be confused. They might grumble. It has no baring on the product and won't adversely affect sales and can't be handled any better - either you have only an all-in-one bundle and people already with camera complain, or you sell pieces and some get confused because they miss a part (although the store should have its own bundle for them if they're competent with sufficient guidance on what version the shopper needs).

Exactly, this is no worse than MS did with the original core 360 (or whatever it was) - at the time I didn't have a HDTV so had to buy a £50 scart lead, now that was a rip off (and no, I couldn't live with composhit)!
