Sony VR Headset/Project Morpheus/PlayStation VR

WIth Occulus revealling their min. specs, have they shot themselves in the foot and left Morpheus the only contender for bringing VR to the mainstream?
They sure did in the short term, but they said the specs requirements will remain static for the lifespan of Rift, so the market share will ramp up in the upcoming years as gamers upgrade. I prefer they do that instead of lowballing the specs, that would cause bad experiences and kill VR.

It's a real worry about what MS will do to make VR work on XB1. Best case would be a 900p HMD or better a 900p render target and a good scaler and external module, so that third parties can do reasonably good ports between Morpheus, Oculus and MS-whatever.

But yeah, Morpheus will have a head start of 30+ million gamers with a PS4.

If PS4's specs are good enough, Oculus should be setting a lower (comparable to PS4) minimum spec, no? And if PS4 isn't going to provide a good enough experience, OVR's minimum specs will be the only true VR solution. I don't see how both OVR and Sony can be right in their choices.

Unscientifically, I would think they are similar.

Okay, the minimum gtx970 is 3.4TFlops, but does the old rule of thumb (carmack?) still applies that consoles optimizations, lower level API, and fixed hardware provide some 2x advantage for the same hardware?

Even today, games on an "equivalent" 1.84TF GPU on PC can't exactly push graphics like Driveclub, 1886, or Uncharted 4, with the same frame rate stability, and this is only the early games in the generation. PC is more prone to micro-stuttering (I never understood why, is this because of the split memory?). A 2x bigger GPU required sounds reasonable.

Why ? Both will be out in 2016. Almost a year from now. The price of a gtx 970 will be much lower than it is today. Even the cpu requirements aren't that bad.

But remember your going from 960x1080 per eye with 30 or 60fps interposed to 120hz vs 1080x1200 at hopefully a true 90fps.

Your also going to have a 970/290x at least driving these experiances where the Morpheus will have a radeon 7850 running the experience.

The real problem with the CV1 is that the specs are not high enough. Its going to alienate those who like to build monster rigs.

The 1% have no serious impact on sales.
we will see in a few months when the vive launches.

The ps4 + Morpheus is going to be expensive about as expensive as getting a gtx 970 and rift/vive any modern i5/i7 from the last 3 or 4 years will be more than powerful enough when equipped with a 970/290x to provide a steller experience on the headsets announced

You think a $300-$400 ps4 + Morpheus will be cheaper than a $300 video card plus vive/rift ? I would expect the 970 to be under $300 when the new amd cards hit in june.

Don't you need a big pc box with CPU ssd etc to plug in that video card in? I do not own something like that.

Well, they will have tough initial period. Sony has an advantage of unified hardware/software ecosystem, everything will be just plug & play.

It won't run in my netbook? That sucks.....

There is a huge number of people who own a desktop tower , more than own ps4s. So a video card is a simple upgrade , there are also a number of companies who make small cases with gtx 970s or better inside of them.

Is there some kind of point to this post? If there is I don't get it.

Just trolling. They think the few 10s of millions the ps4 sold is close to the number of people who have desktop computers that can accept a gtx 970 or equivalent

Its not a simple matter of slapping a GPU inside. Often more upgrades are required to accommodate a more powerful GPU. It depends what the previous configuration was. Some of you guys make it sound as if its as simple as plugging a USB into the port.
At some point many people need to upgrade motherboards, power supplies, memory and CPU's along with the GPU in order to get the desired performance.
And if something goes wrong then its an extra cost
