Sony VR Headset/Project Morpheus/PlayStation VR

Btw without PS Eye PSVR would be like... DK1???

Yea only the on board sensors will work. Most of the games sony has showed off require positional tracking. So I don't really get what sony is doing. a $450 price point still would have looked good

So they somehow build a ps4 without a power brick but then release a "mini ps4" for PSVR with a bloody power brick for it??

Man all those sony fans who hate the xbox one power brick are going to do some back peddling when they buy this lol

Or a low, low, low-end version of the HMZ T-1 ?
It's nice to be able to play all PS4 games though I don't expect the resolution to be comparable to a real tv. So games with small interfaces will be difficult to play

This is what Oculus showed off with the xbox one that everyone made fun of. Its an okay mode but not great

Having a separate SKU for Move is one of the things I'm most jealous of on the PC - there's going to be a lot of smashed Vive and Touch controllers and replacing them probably won't be as simple as driving 5 minutes to the nearest bestbuy. :p
maybe the vive wands , but the touch will really hurt if you slam your hand into a wall . There is not much to them. So I doubt you will do it often

Is that the score with the camera then, that your HMD works but you only get orientation tracking, and you have to buy the camera for positional?

I was absolutely convinced it would come with the camera. Not too big a deal for me as I already have the PS4 camera, but a bit surprised. $44 as well, so approx $150 cheaper than Oculus with the same basic setup, though Oculus includes a controller that you don't need with PS4. So not actually that different in price.

I mean that's how it has to work correct ? The DK1 and Gear VR doesn't have a camera or lighthouse everything is done through the helmet . But after awhile you get positional drift. The Camera/ Lighthouse is there to help prevent it

The rift only has an xbox one controller and they have yet to say if they will track it in anyway. So you have an advantage there for the ps vr since dual shock is trackable

Pretty sure that PSU is powering the headset as well. Definitely disappointing though. I'm guessing this was the design compromise for the VR box to sit horizontally on top of PS4.

Never occurred to me that it would even be an option. So a reasonable amount of stuff ain't gonna work or not work right without the camera. I'm guessing game boxes will have the HMD and camera icons on then if it requires both.

Sort of clever, sort of sneaky, not sure I approve.

Day 1 though

How are they going to advertise it. Its going to be very weird when someone not as knowledgable as us gets home with the psvr , hooks it up and then loads up a game and gets ps camera required .

They go get the camera grumbling about the money ..... PS move required ! Lol

Seems odd to say the least The move thing they can put a sticker on the box so its not a big deal. But it will be odd to list multiple requirements for a game not included with the hardware.

I'm assuming they expect most people to just play old ps4 games with the headset on

the same way as people interested in gear VR have to know that they also need a compatible phone to use it, or the same way people need an internet connection to play online only games etc...
it will certainly be written on the box, it's up to people to read about what they are trying to buy.

I assume this was to get the cost as low as possible and maximize profits. The $400 price point worked with them for the ps4 and it seem to be making the internet happy. Most don't believe the camera isn't included.

without the camera it has exactly the same capabilities as Gear VR ... which is not saying much.

This is the setup (without HDMI going back to the TV, power cable for PS4, or the HMD extension cable):

Worth stating I've still not seen a single piece of software that excites me. I'll preorder it cos it's cheap and knowing I can cancel the day before release. Thanks Amazon!

Maybe they'll put a big sticker on the box saying "you must have a PS camera to use this product" and then shops just stock them both together. While awkward it's arguably better than a large percentage of the market having to buy the camera twice and the launch price having to be higher. If the camera isn't a requirement then it's going to split the market which is pretty rubbish. Far better to make it a requirement. It's bad enough that the markets split with regards to the motion controllers (on PC too).

Kinda unrelated but I wonder if Forza will ship VR ready in future now that it's becoming a PC franchise?
