After all the praise I bought Spelunky as well. And I'm afraid I just don't get the appeal at all. It looks bland as hell. It doesn't sound good. And there's no meaningful progression whatsoever. Sure, the mechanics are rather tight, but that's pretty much par for the course in the genre.
Bring on Rayman Legends.
I was skeptical as well before I bought it, but have played a decent amount now. Appeal for me:
- randomised levels. Makes dying and replaying fun. You still learn patterns for solving specific situations, and you get better at that. It really brings gameplay back to the forefront.
- there are an insane amount of powerups that are fun and meaningful. Some change up the levels completely, especially since
- the levels are completely destructible (apart from the exit). Bombs and pickaxes, or the trap you set off when you steal a gold idol, they all really change everything.
- the mechanics with the surprises you can come across are really amusing. For instance the way you have / can bring stuff to the exit is really fun.
- there is a fair bit of humor in the game
- you start really getting comfortable with how it plays, to the point where I could finish the level after I was distracted and didn't start the level until the ghost was already coming into the screen (a ghost comes for you if you take too long with a level)
As for the progression, when you get to 2.1,
you get to help a guy make a tunnel directly to its start, by giving him a bomb, a rope, etc. - basically you need to get there at least 3 times and give him the stuff he needs)
I'm not sure yet how I'll feel if everything keeps getting harder and harder, but so far it's been worth the money for me.
In the light that some people complain that the new Rayman has barely any challenge at all, it's great to have something like Spelunky around.
