Please, that's one hell of a leap of logic there....
Microsoft doesn't release software sales alongside hardware figures, therefore they must be very low? It's a failure of logic.
No this is not the same thing at all. There is no point in releasing software sales along with hardware figures, if the point of your PR release is to talk about hardware.
The difference here is that Sony is talking about rising amount of active users, but instead of giving the number of active users and some growth %, they give the numbers of downloads in home. Last time i checked, going by forum posts here, there is more stuff to do than paying $5 for a virtual T-shirt in home, so obviously amount of downloads is a very poor indicator of active users growth.
the best metric for measuring if active users is on the raise, is the amount of active users (with active users defined by some measure).
There has to be a reason why they aren't using the best known measure, Sony aren't idiots.
They very well know what measure is the best indicator of rising amount of active users (obviously, the % change in amount of active users!). The fact that they are not releasing this information, rather some downloads thingy, implies that there is a reason for them not releasing the "right" measure.
Why aren't they using their best measure of active users? There has to be something that makes Sony not release the proper numbers.
They obviously are interested in telling the public that the amount of active users is rising, but not interested in telling us the amount, nor the % growth.
What other logical explanation do you have?
In your example with MS software numbers, the case is different. A PR release talking about hardware sales has no intent of telling you if software sales are growing or not, there is no point in showing such a number (albeit it might be interesting for people, its not relevant in regards to what kind of news MS is trying to distrubute.)
In Sony's case, they obviously want to communicate that active users are growing, but doesn't show the proper numbers. back to our MS example, this would be like MS saying hardware sales are growing, and giving us a figure of the amount of XBL downloads. Obviously, in such a case, there is clearly something that MS doesn't want the public to know about their hardware numbers, otherwise they would just release those.
