Sony Home - The official thread*

It saves starting arguments over what constitutes "active", which is the guaranteed internet response to that figure.

Please, the reason for not saying how many active users there is on home is because the number has to be very low.

Active could have been easily defined in the PR release along with the numbers.

"Please" that is how everyone announces anything these days. And even they announced a solid number like 3 million log on every 2 days or 100 million logs on every month it will still be teared apart or comments like "its better than expected but i would say it takes more to make it a success" :)

Please, that's one hell of a leap of logic there (and from someone championing their use of cold, hard business sense in another thread, over ridiculous assumptions :D)

Microsoft doesn't release software sales alongside hardware figures, therefore they must be very low? It's a failure of logic.

I'd like to know how many average/unique connections they have per day/week/month and how that moves over time, but I don't see any reason for them to tell me that info, unless I was looking to create content and wanted to gauge audience/returns etc. There isn't even a competing service on another console which which to compare.

However, it doesn't stop certain people painting those figures (or indeed, the lack of them) in a negative light.

It seems that Home updated to 1.22 (support for better text reading in chat on among others? SDtvs and a few other small things), and that the E3 space is now up and running. Apparently there are a lot of goodies to be had, and if you want all of them you'll basically have to spend the next 3 hours in the virtual E3 exhibition space permanently. ;) Also the conference and several other things will be streamed on the main screen there.

No this is not the same thing at all. There is no point in releasing software sales along with hardware figures, if the point of your PR release is to talk about hardware.

The difference here is that Sony is talking about rising amount of active users, but instead of giving the number of active users and some growth %, they give the numbers of downloads in home.
Last time i checked, going by forum posts here, there is more stuff to do than paying $5 for a virtual T-shirt in home, so obviously amount of downloads is a very poor indicator of active users growth.

the best metric for measuring if active users is on the raise, is the amount of active users (with active users defined by some measure).

There has to be a reason why they aren't using the best known measure, Sony aren't idiots.

They very well know what measure is the best indicator of rising amount of active users (obviously, the % change in amount of active users!). The fact that they are not releasing this information, rather some downloads thingy, implies that there is a reason for them not releasing the "right" measure.

Why aren't they using their best measure of active users? There has to be something that makes Sony not release the proper numbers. They obviously are interested in telling the public that the amount of active users is rising, but not interested in telling us the amount, nor the % growth.

What other logical explanation do you have?

In your example with MS software numbers, the case is different. A PR release talking about hardware sales has no intent of telling you if software sales are growing or not, there is no point in showing such a number (albeit it might be interesting for people, its not relevant in regards to what kind of news MS is trying to distrubute.)

In Sony's case, they obviously want to communicate that active users are growing, but doesn't show the proper numbers. back to our MS example, this would be like MS saying hardware sales are growing, and giving us a figure of the amount of XBL downloads. Obviously, in such a case, there is clearly something that MS doesn't want the public to know about their hardware numbers, otherwise they would just release those.

Yap, I am in now. They have E3 videos running already !

20 mins past ten in EU Home, and nada E3-related stuff available. That, or else it's hidden away so cleverly as to be nigh-impossible to locate.

I really don't 'get' home at all. The reason I thought it interesting was because of the game spaces, but NONE of those are even available in europe, and home's developed in the friggin' UK! It simply boggles my mind as to what the asshats over at sony are thinking when they make these kind of decisions...

I think you guys will get the keynote video the same time as us. Not sure about the 3 full day of video in Home though. The US Playstation blog seems to say we will have continuous update for the entire E3 event, but I may be wrong there.

The videos (on the big screen) in the Podium play immediately, no loading bar. Not sure if that's new for this area only, or for videos in general after the recent update. The playback timing seems to be set at the server (you can walk into the area in the middle of the stream), potentially allowing people to view the same thing at the same time regardless of when they entered the Podium (so long as they're in the same instance of it). Will have to try the Theatre later to see if this new playback method is present there as well.

EDIT

After further testing, I was wrong about the playback timing being global. It just simply appears to buffer quickly (same as with Home Theatre), but starts playback over from the beginning.

Finally visited Home after the 1.21 update and I think it is definitely better. Love the video streaming. It also feels as if it loads faster and transitions you quicker to areas. The chat area is very cool and super functional to me now.

I also applied my reaper costume from inFamous and got tons of questions about it. Pretty cool. Also, does anyone know when we are supposed to get the Cole costume from the demo?

Watched part of the conference (already watched my recording on G4) and it was very cool to see the various conversations and reactions people had about Sony and E3 in general.

Is there any way to lock the screen view when watching the video in the Presentation Podium ? Or better yet, to go into fullscreen mode. I don't mind the comments in a translucent dialog (some are funny), but the camera will pan after idling for some minutes. That's just irritating.

Stand on the platform and select a user name then use the left stick to navigate between profiles until you see the screen option.

Crappy, I know.

Ok thanks. I just did it.

I flamed the Home team on their official forum about this feature about 6 months ago. I will do it again after watching the video.

Couldn't even get on the Home E3 site. Crashed the PS3 every time requiring a hard reset. Sony really are a bunch of amateurs at times!
