Sony Game Studios Acquisitions [2022]

I don't think it was a panic buy and we know from the rumors that MS was interested but when ATVI option happened, they left the talks.
But Sony realized that they should chase Live Service money.

*Could

As long as they keep their non traditional developers out of that space I guess they can buy a few of those

- Ryan wants to go "beyond" consoles

He has expressed that before, indeed.

Also $3.6 Billion...I mean...wow.....They only have Destiny and havent produced much of new IP's. So I wonder whats the long term plan. There must be something they saw in the company. What is the value and the expected profits I m really curious

First thing i thought aswell, WHY? lol. Bungie of all studios. And everything stays multiplatform whatever is coming from that studio, i dont get what does Sony achieve with this? It wouldnt matter if MS would have bought them either, as it wouldve been the same thing for them then.

Will Bungie now go back to making traditional fps games with a single player mode? Cause I didn't care for destiny at all

A new Halo :D

Sigh. Are they really not going to make new games with Sony and just stay a destiny machine? What does anyone else think about this?
According to the picture above; it’s only Destiny staying multi platform. New exclusives should be coming from them as well

I dunno. Based on what Jim said they aren't going to be touching Bungie, just taking it's live service money

Yeah I think it’s pretty much it. It’s not so easy to produce content for game like destiny and it’s established ip with many fans. They expect updates. I really hope that now they will recieve support from Sony and will produce better expansions. It’s great game and I don’t think bungie need to develop new games as long as they will produce great content for destiny.

I can't imagine them being completely hands off. I suspect there will be some titles or some assistance by bungie with other studios.

Yeah. Destiny 2 stays multi. It says nothing about anything after that.
Also, clearly this isn’t Sony “panic buying”, simply because this kind of deal has been months in the making. You don’t just pick up the phone after seeing MS buying Activision and go ‘let’s do this’.

Find this quote funny...

"Every player should have an amazing Destiny experience, no matter where you choose to play."

Except when the Playstation 4 had timed exclusive content up until 2019?

No sweat off my back. I never really cared for Destiny. Haven't even played it more than a couple of hours.

This deal is for GAAS experience & future IP. No problem with that.

I agree, even then, I can't see how this is a response to MS buying AB necessarily - except slightly more motivation to shore up your FPS line.

As Cheapchips said earlier, if you spent 70B to take a slightly larger slice of the 300million console owners/revenue, you failed. MS wouldn't spend 70B to get back barely any return. There is a larger play in the works here to keep these particular companies away from new entrants while leveraging them for whatever is next.

I see these moves nearly as a coalition against the big incoming 3 except they are looking out for themselves. The landscape in the retail console space has not changed all that much since these acquisitions, and even if there is some change, it's not bound to be major. But amazon, facebook and google coming in with committed funding, that would change the landscape. So while the big 3 are still getting their act together, MS and Sony are making moves and announcing now that they will continue to make them.

This is just how I view it.

So, is this aquirement made by sony any 'better' then what MS has done or is doing? In my book their both as 'bad' or 'good' however you want to see it.
MS got alot of flak for their aquiring here and even at DF.
I never saw either as bad. MS owning AB is a massive positive for me and I can make fairly good arguments on why among the companies that were looking to purchase, MS is the best fit for them.
Bungie being owned by Sony is fine.

Bungie being owned by Google/Amazon/FB and AB being owned by one of them. That would have been real bad.

Couldnt agree more.

I think this is just insurance for COD staying on Playstation. If MS will keep COD on Playstation Sony will keep Destiny on Xbox.
No, knowing Bungie the reason it went to Sony is due to multiplatfrom clause. Also it ensures that Sony still have some FPS on the platform lol

I also think the same way. Considering the rumors about Google who decided to leave the gaming after Bethesda's deal and rumors about Facebook sniffing around I would not be surprised that the current gaming platforms - Phil specifically mentioned Nintendo, Sony and Valve - decided to form some kinda of coalition or whatever it is called where they will try to grab whatever possible to fend off bigger tech giants.
