Sony Computer Entertainment Acquires Cloud Gaming Company Gaikai For $380 Million

A guy on the bonus round just suggested a cool idea, have Gaikai to stream a PS4 demo on to the PS3 just after the meeting on the 20th. Not happening but it would be awesome.

WSJ perhaps being overly optimistic:

Sony's new console may also allow users to compete against others using different hardware, such as smartphones and other portable devices, those people said.

I just realized PS3 is still using older wireless LAN tech. ^^

I am still not a big believer in Streaming, but at least the Vita is a device that has the right controls to make it interesting.

Fortunately, I find the Vita plenty 'useful' as it is.

Yeah, IMHO, streaming will have a compromised and uneven experience. Probably limited to some games, including old Playstation titles. Some people will complain about the lag, while others will be surprised by its performance.

I am most curious about the reported PS3 backward compatibility: Whether the mainstream press mistook PS3 PSN games as BR titles. And how it works.

I am hoping they update Vita OS to include folders, and perhaps use the same look & feel as PS4. The current LiveArea UI is functional, but it looks rather inconsistent and messy compared to the sleek h/w.

Why would you stream old Playstation titles? Why not just emulate them?

Speaking in general terms, e.g., streaming PS2 games to iPad.

For games that can be run "as is" on existing hardware, I think they can also use "Gaikai Cloud Delivery", which sounds like some sort of progressive download technology.
The user starts playing the game (almost) immediately while it's being downloaded.

Would definitely like to see PS2 emulation on PS4. With improved performance. I'd actually make use of that, seeing as plenty of great PS2 titles never received modern upgrades.

Is it even possible to emulate the PS2?
They couldn't on the PS3, maybe PS4 will finally be able to...

They'll did on PS3, just not for all games. But the PS2 Classics they sell on PSN are emulated in software. I think the PS4 will have more comprehensive PS2 emulation, opening the floodgates for digital versions of the PS2 library.

Besides PS2 games are ripe for HD remakes. Lots of classics that even just rendered at 1080p with some MSAA and AF would make a world of difference.

The problem is it probably isn't worth the money to do native ports on any but the top tier games. Just dumping ISOs that can run in an emulator is effectively free money for the publishers. It would be great if they could automatically render in a higher resolution ala PCSX2, though. So far Sony have erred on the side of verisimilitude more than enhancements, though that has changed a bit with Vita's PSX and PSP emulators. Control remapping and added filtering could just be the tip of the iceberg.

Of course, it depend on the quality of the emulator and how much raw power is available. Also, PSOne games has so few polygons available in the first place that increasing internal resolution wouldn't have done much. But a PS2 game at 1080p, man that looks amazing. Text looks fuzzy though.

So 1080p resolution + high res texture pack + aspect ratio correction and BOOM, HD port.

So you will have the most crappy dualshock emulator ever together with and extremely unreliable latency on the games? Not a very nice experience.....

Hmm... If they were to stream old Playstation games to tablets, they might as well consider making the new controller work with them, or something equivalent.

The latency should be similar to what other Gaikai clients experience. They should focus on the games that are less sensitive to Gaikai's latency in any case.

If it doesn't matter how the games play why can't you just emulate them. It is not like the frame rate matters.
