You're right. I'm a chump! Or...um...they changed the article post haste . I read it as Sony believing an increase in price wouldn't affect sales, and they'd sell as many PS3's with it. But the line from Play.tm clarifies the price increases as not being applied to the PS3.

It wasn't that great a disparity actually, as was debated continually at the time. Two factors that were never considered usually when the conversions were taking place were that the currency to normalize to was the yen - everyone always converted to dollars - and that the VAT was included in the UK retail price whereas taxes in N America and Japan were external/additional to the retail price.
