So tonight , I will have extended time with a Radeon 9800

I would write one (just find something semi useful to do that takes a lot of instructions and loop it) but it would be for DX, and seeing as the 9800Pro only supports 96 instructions in DX9...

/me likes finding excuses for not working ;)

If you have acces to it, i would love to see some IL2-Forgotten Battles Benches.
High Res (1600x1200) kills my 9700.

The game suffers heavily from the use of pixel-shaders for the new water (perfect landscape setting). Take the "Krim map" in a quick mission and see... lots of water there :)
I would love to know, if this decrease is improved in the 9800 with the "better" pixel shaders.

Aquanox2 might server a similar purpose.

So: please compare in-game pixel shader performance from 9700 vs 9800 at same clocks.

Thx,
Markus

First impressions of the 9800 Pro

I have a interesting story to tell today. I had 4 hours with a 9800 Pro, which isn't that long, but who knows if I'll get more extended time with one. Anyway.

1. 2d image quality-excellent same as 9700 pros .
2. 3D Image quality- also excellent
3. My test system was a little bit underpowered (2000+ XP which is the standard test system for the website bleh I would have loved to have tested it on the 3000+ XP or 3.06 P4 in the same room but ah well) , and as I only had 4 hours with the card.
4. In most benchmarks the 9800 Pro was faster than the 9700 Pro. In a couple of situations, however, the 9800 Pro was actually slower by a hair (1 fps or so ) in a benchmark run. My test methodology is as follows format/ghost install drivers install applications check settings run test. If I change a setting FSAA, for example, I would reboot the system to make sure the settings were changed via ATI's control Paneland double check the settings in the benchmark:

Notable instances where the 9800 Pro was out-benched by the 9700 Pro

Quake3 1024x768 32bit max settings no AA no AF- reran the benchmark 3 times could NOT account for the 3% faster 9700 Pro (Crucial 9700 Pro clocked at 325/310MHz verified by Power Strip ) versus a 9800 Pro clocked at 380/340 MHz.

UT2003 1024x768 32bit 4x AA

Dronezmark all settings (AA was set on via Control Panel, but every test run had the same FPS) I think FSAA wasn't enabled as I couldn't tell a visual difference as well.

Gameplay , however, was extremely nice Unreal 2, Generals , Rallisport Challenge all played well without issue and seemed smoother than on the 9700 Pro with FSAA and aniso on.

Unfortunately, I didn't have more time to do more with the card.
