Shadow of the colossus and framerate issues

Stuttering can be caused by dirty lasers in the DVD drive. I've known games stutter on one machine and not another, and this has been fixed with a clean, or in some people#s cases a tweaking of the DVD drive's head. So it might be that if data is being streamed, or might just be slowdown as too much is hapenning for the hardware to cope.

Well if it happens when the Colossus falls down defeated, i'd think it's because the hardware can't cope with the particles, the physics and whatever else happens when the thing comes down. No streaming is done when you're not running around the game world.

I haven't seen the scene, but in addition to what Shifty said above, streaming is not necessarely dependant on "running around" or gameplay. Data can be also streamed when a certain event triggers (i.e. the player dies or a certain (particle) effects are loaded that are not fully loaded in memory already etc). Without having first hand experience with the game, I doubt we can say for sure what triggers it, if it's an issue or not.

In anycase, Shifty's right - I've encountered dirty discs playing a factor in streaming heavy games as well, not only when moving around.

Not that it's any sort of real evidence, but the link in my previous post had a video for the commercial of the game and the Colossus falls down quite smoothly. Yeah, it's a commercial, but... well, see for yourself.

"Beta" and "Final" aren't necessarily the same thing. They're usually very close though. ;)
i know and i hoped they had a beta and not the final. after all, egm must have had it for a while since it's not even out and they still had to beat it.

i doubt that there's any physics involved in the colossus falling. if anything, it's animations are streamed. it may be particles. there are cases were glitches happen when the drive cant read the disk correctly, so it could be that too.

Guys my post was basicly supposed to be this .

"I played a build of shadow of the colossus and there were some framerate issues , however the game itself is extremely fun and will easly gloss over any issues the gmae may or may not have on the final build "

You guys know i don't like the playstation , but i do love this game and i think its one of the best titles on the system . Now if only i can hook up a better controller

jvd, that coming from you, and I barely know you, makes the wait worth it.

And if you really want framerate issues, Socom 2 right now is like watching a slideshow at times.

I just want the soundtrack now!!!!! <smiley with head banging on brick wall>

That was epic. I think after watching all these trailers, I have enough hints as to "how" to take down certain colossi.

OTOH, jvd I forgot to ask you. How do you control the horse? Is it just through the analogue stick or do you have to give it "tug" commands to make it go left, right and stop. I hope they similate it as if you're riding a real horse.

Yes someone that played the game said that you actually control the player not the horse. Most games the analogue stick controls the horse. This game the stick controls the player which in turn is suppose to control the horse giving you that much closer feeling to actually riding a horse.

actually you can set it up either way i belive . But yea you control the dude in the standard control set up

As you all know ICO had dialogue in a different language than any existing language. Well, they've provided an English version for those to read at 1up. Yes, my grammar's in the toilet right now.

More importantly, and the REAL reason I made this post... my game of ICO came with translations... you had to play it a second time in order to see them though. Ueda commented that they didn't have time to implement this do to the rush, so why is it I have translations? Am I missing something?

Uhm if you were a REAL Ico lover and player and if you REALLY had played through it a gazillion times like I did, you'd know that after you finish the game, the dialogue becomes legible in English. No more strange symbols. ;)

THAT WHAT I THOUGHT!!

So then why are they saying that they didn't include it in the game? Were some screwed over??

Some were infedels and didn't finish the game 189300 times like any good gamer should.

1UP: In regards to the un-translated dialogue in Ico, we know you were planning to put the translated text in the U.S. version on the second play-through. But you didn't have time. Was the original intent so that people would think with their hearts rather than just read what was scrolled across the screen for them? Did you try to use emotion as the principal storytelling device?

FU: Rather than that, in order to give expression to what words can't say, we decided to make the subtitles unreadable. But as to what they are saying, we thought about the meaning. In the Japanese version, if you play it through the second time, you unlock the translation. Really, we wanted to do it for the US version too, but we ran out of time.

OK, l-b, I'm confused again. ;_;
