Shadow of the colossus and framerate issues

Possibly an art choice, ICO had a seemingly limited color gamut as well, so I think frankly it may be a bit of both.
Palette changes and vertex colouring has a minimal hit. I doubt very much that is the reason for that look.

Am I the only one who prefers a good musical score rather than graphics?
You're asking this on a forum on one of the premier (if not THE premier) 3D computer graphic technology sites on the Internet - guess what the answer is :p

I guess you're right :) But aside from that, you're telling me no one appreciates music? :?:

I'm sre plenty do. I certainly do. A good soundtrack can make an experience and is fundamental to the movie industry. I think it doesn't get as much attention as it could in games, though that said reviewers do rate it. Can't really say fairer than that. I doubt audio soundtrack will ever sell a game though unlike graphics, with perhaps the exception of dancing/singing games.

Well, if it makes you feel any better I own around 30 or so videogame OSTs and arranged OSTs. Music is very important, but as Powder said it can sometimes be overlooked, nowhere near as much as sfx or VA, which is terrible in the states 90% of the time, but I think people appreaciate it. From what I've seen it only gets mentioned if it's particularly good or bad or if the game is from a developer or composer who's rather well recognized for their music. For instance, the fact that Uematsu is working on Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon garnered a lot of attention, good or bad.

By the way, if you like the music from Shadow and the Colossus, check out the ICO soundtrack. Not suer if it's the same composer (Ooshima Michiru), but same feel.

Music can be right up there with graphics and artistic merits. I love Grandia even more with wicked soundtrack! Having good music definitely adds to the game.

God of War to me has the best music score that I've ever heard in any game ever! It gave the game so much more life. Like it was full of meaning.

yes, the GOW soundtrack was epic. I ran into some problems downloading it from Sony Connect, I think it's cause I'm on OS X. But managed to get MP3 rips of it instead.

But for me, it's all about Silent Hill. My girlfriend freaked out when she heard the Silent Hill 1 OST. I really like it when Silent Hill 3 came with the OST, now that's added value!

Just to let u guys know hte sony rep came in and had this game (along with some others that really stink like the nightmare before x mass) i played it for about 20 mins and its a really fun game i will be picking it up , but egm is right , there was slight stuttering in the game esp as the colossus starts to fall .

Now i have no clue how old this build was but i know it wasn't a finished build . But the game is extremely fun and even with this problem there is no reason not to pick it up

Hmmm.. being so close to the release date it might be final. Regardless, as long as the stuttering is not during game play I really don't mind. MGS 3 could get quite choppy during the "heated" moments.

Thanks for your input!

MGS3 had problems with particals. it looks like thats when slowdown occurs. could be rush code?
just like re4's demo, water didn't have any "shader" effects. then the game was released shortly after with the fixings.

jvd: "but egm is right , there was slight stuttering in the game esp as the colossus starts to fall ."

Was it a demo or beta version?

it was the game , dunno what version it was , the lady had it on her along with some other stuff and we got to play it while hanging out at the store .

There is some stuttering problems but the game is really fun. I dunno how old that version is . But i'm just saying egm is not making things up there are problems on at least the build i played

well yea, i knew there were some problems with the framerate, but that was an old build. the e3 build to be exact. recently there were some new previews, and they stated that the framerate issues along with the l.o.d. glitches were vastly improved. i think egm may be blowing it out of proportion due to biasses, or they had a finished, beta version. i really hope it's the latter.

"Beta" and "Final" aren't necessarily the same thing. They're usually very close though. ;)

Stuttering can be caused by dirty lasers in the DVD drive. I've known games stutter on one machine and not another, and this has been fixed with a clean, or in some people#s cases a tweaking of the DVD drive's head. So it might be that if data is being streamed, or might just be slowdown as too much is hapenning for the hardware to cope.
