Shadow of the colossus and framerate issues

UK release is Summer 2007.

Probably. You know what they're like! And it's not coming out in Australia until third quart 2009

Well, Play has it for February which sounds about right. It's one I intened to get too, as I missed out on ICO and can't afford the £80+ being charged on eBay (though in theory I can buy, play and sell for even more money!). Hope this one does well. It's a different take on gaming and I want more companies to take up the challenge. Though if titles like this take 3 years to produce, it's not economically viable. I Sony have been supporting the ICO development team on the creation of SOTC as by accounts ICO didn't sell loads.

Well the whole Ico project was Sony's little go at being artistic. It is done by a studio owned by Sony, so they get their money anyway. And i'm quite sure it's one of those rare occasions when Sony won't just fire everyone because the game doesn't sell well. Ico has been regarded as Sony's "gem" in this generation, and i think they like that idea, whether it sold well or not (i think it still made them a profit anyway). I expect SOTC to sell much more than Ico, and that it will be regarded in the same way as Ico. And i can't wait to put my sticky hands on it!

That's something I really respect Sony for. They support the different genres and wierder ideas. That's part of the reason why PS3 appeals to me; I know Sony will be backing some big ideas and 'artistic' games to go with all the conventional stuff.

I guess they can afford to have some few little "gems" that can sell like crap, as long as they're "gems". Like Katamari Damaci (which they haven't even bothered to release in Europe!).
I mean, for every low-selling gem, you have 100 crappy licence-based million sellers so i think they're not worried about losing money on the software side of things, if it makes people think "oooh Sony have fixed up their first party games!"

From the ign review:
trying to describe exactly what makes Shadow of the Colossus so fantastic is akin to trying to describe why the bodies of work of Picasso, Bach or Beethoven are unquestioned classics; you can do your best, but any of these examples must be experienced in full to truly be understood, and especially appreciated.

Sheesh.. talk about overwriting... :???:

SOTC is to Beethoven what Gerschwin is to Mozart (anyone with suitable knowledge of the world of classical music should know what quote that has to do with!).

judging from the demo :)

i think i know why people have issues with the game's framerate...

it seems if you ride the horse's speed it goes to a motion blur thing...

but it doesn't have a transition from blur --> soft blur --> no blur

so from a fast motion blur... it goes to no blur...

same goes if you go around and play with the camera (right analog stick)

if you twirl it around like a madman, it goes to a motion blur-like state...

but it completely halts with no transition...

it's kind of awkward but if you're fighting that giant beast you wouldn't want the transition...

so i guess it's the trade off...

the kewl thing is that you can set the brightness anf aspect ratio...

and the speed of the camera to your taste...

and the buttons are fully customize the control scheme :)

i didn't like the default jump button (it was on the triangle)

so i switched it with the x (by default the x bvutton calls your horse).

CAN"T WAIT FOR THE FULL GAME :)

You're right. but i think the game does have framerate problems. Hopefully it's not bad!

According to an IGN comparison video, the framerate, detail and visibility range have greatly improved over the E3 demo version (you can download this somewhere, don't know where...)

SOTC [and RE4,(PS2] are the only games I really want this year(atleast for christmas). I really enjoyed ICO....heck I just enjoy these kinds of games even if there arent a whole lot of them on the market. I even told my friend to get ICO(if he were able to find). IIRC, he found a copy at Wal-Mart for $10.......I got mine at Blockbuster for $20. He'll be very interested in SOTC as well.

I just went to the Gamestop a town away from me (in the local mall) and they where all out :). I then went to the Circuit City in that mall and found about 4 copies in stock so I lucked out. Came out to only $39.99 :p ($41 and some change after taxes). I'm going to hook my PS2 up to my 61" HDTV with my component cables, I'll let you all know how I like it a little later.

It's an awesome game. I can see the framerate issues and occasional pop ups but other than that it's perfect.

I can't believe how diversive each colossus fight is. You'd think it would be repetative.

The graphics are typical PS2 but with no load times it's quite impressive for what they could pull off.

Yes, your right about the Framerate issue and the occasional popups. Also, I wholeheartedly agree with you about how awesome this game is.

These are the most foreboding, evil looking and intimidating monsters i've ever fought. My mother was watching me fight the 3rd Colossus and she commented on how you sense the massiveness and how creepy it looked.

Each Colossus IS unique, they require you to rethink (well, this applies for the first 3) how your going to attack each Colossus. It always creeps me out when the Colossus are searching for me...then it just locks on to me....

I just finished beating the 3rd Colossus. One of the best boss battle i've ever had. It went for about a little over an hour, thats how long it took me to figure out how to beat this guy then beat him. I won't go into how, but it requires alot of patience!

I recommend this game to ANYONE that has a PS2. Its only $39 and its worth it. I also want to note that some type of blur is used alot in this game. Sorta like PGR3. In this game, if you move the camera very quickly (which I do alot when fighting a Colossus), your environment blurs very rapidly...it looks VERY cool. Also....if you can...get component cables (if you got a Progressive Scan capable television), it looks SO much better.

Too harsh.

Because of the exceptional pain caused by Gershwin to my ears, I think of this statement as a harsh criticsm of SOTC creator. :)

I'll say the same. I just got trough beating the 8th colosussi and the game is still great. This game is like no other. There is no other game that I can compare this to. And like BlueTsumani said the motion blur is incredible. I've never actually seen this kind of blur in a game before. It's one of the best technical graphic touches that the game has over just being plain pretty as hell to look at. The game seems to have a touch of DOF too. I could be wrong but it looks that way to me. And the art direction is top notch.

It seems like each tree and fern is indiviually modeled. Acorns on trees make the game seem more real for some reason. The attention to detail is crazy. The animation is great too. Some of the best animation that I've ever seen in a game. I can see why this game got a 9.5 on IGN. If motion blur in next-gen games will look like this game, then I will be very happy.

This is imo the most technical impressive game on the PS2 so far.

Using Fur,great animations, Motion Blur, Depth of Field, 16:9, Progressive Scan, and the best Lighting ive ever seen on any Platform so far, some kind of HDR?

yes ,there is DOF.And a lot of IK blend in animation system. The game mechanics are perfect, even just ridding the horse is a wonder.Having a character Climbing these moving colossus is a trully challenging feat to implement in a game. The camera is pretty smart too.
I play at night ,and every morning i wake up with the feeling i did dream the 2-3 hours i spent playing that game.

<Possibly some spoilers!!!!!!!!!!!!>

One of the most menacing looking colossus imo is the turtle like one, sorry, forget the number he's in. He's big, mean and everytime i see his face light up in that diamond formation I just tell Agro to run like heck in one direction cause those projectiles cause serious damage. It took me a few tries with this guy and he gave me the creeps everytime he spotted me.

<end spoilers>

Great, now i have to finish the first Ico and then SOTC, then buy GoW and FFXII and RE4(GC or PS2 VER?). Oh finish HL2 on the PC and buy Q4. No time to sleep... In fact no time at all!
