Shadow of the colossus and framerate issues

little OT note :
HDR display : 200 000 :1

looks like the perfect next gen screen, ain't it ? :)

These things definitely rock - I've seen them at Siggraph for the last few years.

However I have reservations about how suitable they are for gaming, at least in the short term. From what I can tell they work by having the backlight be an array of white LEDs (or other bright light source) which are addressable, rather than the current single diffuse source.

The problem that I see with them is that the resolution of this array is quite low compared to the LCD image. You end up with a bloom effect whether you wanted it or not.

Also, although I've seen them up close and been impressed - I never saw one run a moving image. That may just have been the nature of the demos they were showing (mostly photographs) but it might also be that a moving image would show aliasing.

I think the backlight approach of LCD is limited - which is another reason I don't think LCD is really going to be the future of display technology. I think fundamentally the pixels on a display need to light up. Otherwise we're going to need LCD panels which are much much better at blocking light, much more resolution in the amount of light they can let through, and considerably brighter backlights.

The current attempt at HDR display is (I think) a bit of a dead end, and only suitable for a subset of purposes.

bit-tech article :looks like moving pictures( games ,movies ) are great too ....

Looking at that article they kind of skip over the details on how they manage to make a blurry HD image look sharp (which is understandable, as this is at the heart of the expensive technology they want to sell...)

I'm sure it works to some degree and I'm looking forward to seeing it enter the consumer market (which means they have to knock at least one zero off the price...)

However as much as I applaud them for pushing the idea of an HDR display forward I still remain unconvinced that this particular type has any long-term future.

The same way they make any other geometry look better; by applying more complex shading - usually lighting effects.

I don't think SotC suffers much from the lack of these, because the hair used is generally quite dense and rough, and the lighting is often quite diffuse. It's not a shampoo advert :)
oh ok.

I played it for 30 mins till now and I 've yet to face any living organism...:?:. This game need loads of patience it seems. Anyway great looking game, makes you remember ICO.

OT: What happens at the end in ICO, I couldn't understand it.

I took my time, reading the manual and learning all the moves, exploring a bit of the world on horseback, before figuring how to get to the first colossi. Bit of a mystery that one, but you have to climb to get to the area the first one is in.

After you figure that out, it's easier to find the others.

I'm on the last Colossi now, and WOW!!! Very tough also, as I have yet to beat it.

There are lizards, birds, grass and trees...

Otherwise it's pretty much just you, your horse, your dead friend and some great big Colossi. It's not a social game - and neither was ICO to be fair...

(if you want ICO explaining, there are guides on GameFAQs that will spoil things for you - I don't want to spoil things for people here in case they want to play the re-released version when it comes out).

No, I finished ICO long ago. I just wanted to know about the ending. ;)

Even so, there's are fairly meaty write-ups around that try to make sense of what happens.

I think at least partly it's up to you to draw your own conclusions.

SotC is the same.

Damn you're pretty good. I'm on the last guy and I played for about 13 hours.
Thanks. I'm really good at games like this. That way i wanted a little more in the puzzle area.

Thanks. I'm really good at games like this. That's why i wanted a little more in the puzzle area, but very innovative puzzles. I never did any of the puzzles they had in there.

EDIT.

That's very very VERY good news. It's basically a confirmation that the Ico team will keep working and doing their thing for Sony into the next generation. Say the game will sell 500k copies in its entire lifetime (very likely at this point), that's probably a good profit (Don't think the game cost more than 2M to make) for them and their ticket for the new game.
